I love my headset. Flying around Innsbruck airport area is absolutely mindblowing with the Vive Pro 2. The color reproduction, ambient lighting, shadow detail, clouds, water reflection, surface reflection inside the cockpit are all great and really something that is just not reproducible in lower res headsets.
I use Ultra mode in Vive Console to ensure the best output with Vive motion compensation on, also 3420x3420 in general SteamVR setting again to ensure optimal 1.4x distortion correction. Then I downsample in per-app video setting FS2020 to around 3000. In MSFS, I use 70% rendering. Great horizontal FOV if you use thinner facepad (I got 114 deg wearing glasses with testhmd, probably higher wearing contact lens), great edge to edge clarity like the Index, legible cockpit text. Vive’s motion compensation isn’t as good as SteamVR’s motion smoothing but it is very close and gets the job done.
The glare, yep it’s there but I’m used to that with my Index so I’m fine. The audio hum is there but faint, can’t hear it when the engine sound is blasting against my ears.
I did try full 100% rendering without downsampling (3420x3420), and the image quality is truly breathtaking, unfortunately my 9900K/3090 setup is not able to handle it without becoming a slideshow judder. But I’ve seen the glimpse of the true potential of this headset and we will need at least the next gen CPU and GPU to really take advantage of it.
I received my VP2 yesterday and within an hour I requested a return. If you have a narrow head then there is no way to get the headset to feel comfortable, there is light coming in from the sides and the back foam does nothing for stability. I never bothered to turn it on. I have a G2 right now and have had Index and CV1 before, all of which fit perfectly and stable. Just not built for my head shape I guess.
I’m confused Capt, are you talking about the G2’s all around VR abilities or it’s performance in MSFS, it’s not perfect but still a good experience in MSFS. I don’t think the all around abilities was a suprise either if I’m being honest, that was more in hope than expectation.
I don’t know where to place the Vive Pro 2, the lenses seem to make or break this headset for me, if you get a good set you’re ok but if they are bad like VoodooDE version then you’re in for a terrible experience, in that regards it’s similar to the G2 - Oculus seem to be much more consistent in the manufactoring process.
I do agree now Oculus have moved away from a premium PC market that a Valve Index 2 would be an exciting proposition and it does look like the best made headset on the market. I’ve not dipped into lighthouses yet so that’s my concern - would Valve ever produce an inside out headset?
I have had my VP2 since Monday and trying to get MSFS happy with it.
I do have a issue where if MSFS is running but not in VR mode if I close the Vive Console it will close and then re open. If MSFS is not running this does not happen and the Vive Console when told to close will stay closed. It is like MSFS is trying to talk to SteamVR even if not in VR mode which makes no sense to me.
Also like my G2 and Valve index I have to have the MSFS desktop in full screen mode for the VR toolbar windows and name plate fonts to look correct. I have a Voice Attack command for it so not a big deal but does seem to be a waste of resources that could be used for VR.
Vive console by default runs whenever your headset is connected. So unless you turn off the link box it won’t stay close. You can disable this function in the setting.
I do this with X-Plane all the time and when I tell the Vive Console to close it closes, Steam VR closes and the base stations and Index controllers turn off. This is all with the link box on.
With everything off except for the link box if I turn on my Index controllers everything starts up.
MSFS is interfering with that operation in my opinion.
So I would agree with this, I was on the fence on keeping mine, but the panels have failed giving a wired vertical lines and screen door effect. Tried everything to fix it. But have now asked for refund.
I would say if you have a G2 it not worth the upgrade if most of your Vr gaming is seated. It’s a good option if you want a slight bump in quality and want to play games where you need to be up and about.
In terms of performance I’d say for MSFS the G2 is a better option over the Pro 2. If you start reducing the resolution of the Pro2 to get to perform it kinda defeats the point of the having the Pro2.
I am seeing something with my VP2 that seems quite strange.
If MSFS is running in non VR mode and you try to close the VIVE Console it will close and then restart and also restarting SteamVR.
I am asking myself why MSFS would be doing anything related to VR when it is not in VR mode?
I am getting very poor performance with my VP2 compared to my G2 and wonder if this might be related? I have a i7 9700K @4.6 and a RTX 2080 Ti so would have thought that would be good enough.
For MSFS, the VP2 on my i9/2080Ti is of little value since IMO, you need VR render scaling of at least 150 to reach the quite remarkable clarity that this headset can work with, but I just can’t do that at reasonable framerates. At 100 render scaling, which gives me tolerable frame rates, all I see on this headset is clearer voxel-looking blobs in the distance. VR distance draw in this sim at low (<130) render scaling is basically a disaster. Totally different story on almost every other sim, which scale up nicely to the higher resolution of the VP2. My advice is don’t buy this headset for MSFS. Low cost, low res HMDs are your friend.
I bought a VP2 for my workplace a few weeks ago. It’s mainly the face and body tracking features for software development that it was bought for.
Currently it doesn’t achieve the fps I can get with Q2 and reverb g2, but I guess that may change with future updates. I last flew with it with SU4 and it was about 20% less fps than q2 and g2
It has surprisingly very poor optics (god rays and glowing Fresnel rings - on par or worse than Quest v1) but the potential resolution is there in the very centre of your vision, for reading gauges in flight without leaning forward (similar to g2). I don’t notice the optic issues so much during bright daytime flights, but is really quite bad for overcast and night. It also has an unusual screen overlap that I haven’t experienced on other headsets. It’s probably how they achieved the extra FOV, but at a cost. IMHO It’s not a headset I’d recommend for gaming.
I’ve removed the reverb g2 face plate and added padding directly, so there’s not much difference in FOV between the VP2 and G2 for me
The VPS has a nice face plate adjustment and the speakers sound good, but must be set to press against your ears to sound good.
It’s blacks might be a touch darker than the g2 which is good.
VP2 will certainly suit the larger person (larger faces and head)
My apologies to those who own a vp2. I know it sounds like I’m quite negative about it (it’s just my 2 cents). I’m in an unusual position through work for having access to many headsets most folk probably wouldn’t, for comparing them side by side.
I bought, and quickly returned a Vive Pro 2 for the same reasons you mentioned. The lenses and optics are horrible, and the stereo overlap just made the headset look plain wrong. If I moved my eyes around the view would often split onto two lenses, just unsuable for me.
Bought a Reverb G2 instead and much happier with it.
I must be one of the lucky ones because I have a G2 and VP2 and now consider my VP2 my daily driver for MSFS and X-Plane.
I did a 3 hour group flight with FootanMouth in MSFS with my VP2 yesterday and did not experience any of the issues I have heard of.
My VP2 is modded and I have added a ModMic wireless, Studioformcreative Counter Balance Enthusiast Kit, RelOptix Lens Inserts and a USB fan to help exhaust the heat out of the headset.
I needed a high end headset that supported SteamVR and the G2 was not fitting that bill for me on MSFS.
I stream VR so do spend quite a bit of time in a headset and this is a report of what I am finding. I will say that I find it easier to stream VR in X-Plane and am wainting for the next MSFS update before I will try to stream it again.
I’m reading this with interest - I’m still on the fence when it comes to upgrading from my OG Vive. First I thought I’d go with Index, but there’s no distributor in Australia any more (EB Games sold a batch of it then discontinued), then I thought I’d go with Vive Pro2, but the Vive console motion retroprojection seems horrible - I wish it were the steamVR instead… I guess I should wait a bit longer for the next hmds
You’ll get the Vive Pro 2 through JB-HiFi as a special order, but HTC support through them is as limited as ever. I’m in the middle of an RMA with HTC and had to use HTC online chat as there was no other way to contact them. This took a week of back and fro-ing to get to the stage of having it returned.
The support phone numbers listed for HTC are disconnected (phone message advises they have been disconnected).
My luck ran out over a week ago when I got a green vertical line in the right screen. After a couple of hours with support chat got a RMA number and sent back for repair. It will be delivered today so they only had it for less than 2 days to get it repaired. It took a little less than a week to get it sent back to me.
Because I am a impatient person I decided to try a Pimax Vision 8K X-KDMAS during the time my VP2 was in for repair. The Pimax is nice but will be glad to get the VP2 back as I do find it a crisper image just not as wide a FOV.
I do not use the Vive Motion Compensation, agreed it is horrible.
However I find my experience with it off to be very good , have used it with MSFS 2020 of course, DCS, and IL-2 Great Battles. Strange I know but it works for me.
That’s good to know - especially that you’re using DCS and IL2 as well like this, because there’s the added dimension of the fast movement of other aircraft. So I guess if you’ve got the motion compensation off, you’re just relying on the old steamVR retroprojection? I used to rely on that in the early days of the OG Vive, but it came at the price of ghosting which was fairly obvious when dogfighting - I’m guessing you would be getting that effect then?
