How did you planned and get prepared for MSFS2024, rig, new expectations, testing area, flightplan, bush trips ...?

Nothing really orderd 2 Aviators editions, one cancelled, now wait for my other 4 TB hard drive to install MSFS 2024. I am still enjoying MSFS 2020. No rush to download

Mine is still working.

Will spend the first few hours mapping controls for GA and twin/quad jets on my turtle beach yoke

Oooof. I forgot about having to re-map everything. Sigh.

Upgraded my GPU to a 4080 Ti Super, which also required a bigger PSU. Also transferred everything to a 4TB NVMe SSD so I can keep 2020 alongside for a while (just in case). The sim pit is mostly the same, but I’ve added labels to my button box and cleaned up a lot of configuration.

I’m pretty much ready to go!

Preparing my system by doing the following:

  • Clean out my case with an air blower, get any dust from the last three months out
  • Backup the Premium Deluxe content
  • Install MSFS 2024
  • Port over Premium Deluxe content and possibly addons
  • Uninstall MSFS 2020
  • Delete shader cache
  • Relaunch MSFS 2024
  • Fly

That is until I buy a new system that can handle MSFS 2024. My current rig barely meets the minimum requirements for it.

Anyone thinking of starting out with a clean slate on Little Nav Map, and Volanta?

Littlenavmap and volanta are third party flight logging programs. I started out with Littlenavmap because of the problems I was having with the MSFS 2020 log book. I started playing with Volanta this year (2024). Volanta is kind of fun with the challenges you can complete.

In littlenavmap, I have around 5500 log entries, and have 4451 airports visited. Working from home helped me log lots of hours in the flight simulator. Setup a flight, auto pilot, back to work, check it around the time to land.

It looks like it will be easy to archive the logbook and the 5937 user points.

I think it would be nice to start over with a clean littlenavmap log book, and user points. I mark each airport I land at with a user point. when I fly I try not to land at an airport I have already landed at.

Volanta on the other hand has no way to clear out the flights , challenges, etc. short of creating a new account.

Just a thought about starting out in 2024.

My plan is to wait a year before I buy the update. It will be at least that long before the bugs are worked out.

FS 2020 works well enough for my needs.

Nothing yet, but planning on:

Ryzen 5800x > 9800 x3d as soon as I can get my hands on one.

AM5 mb and 64 Gb DDR5 to match above

Radeon 6700xt > we’ll see what AMD and Nvidia announce at CES

FS releases have driven PC upgrades for me since at least version 5. I started on the Atari ST version.

Transferring custom view presets and HOBB hours for a plane from 2020 to 2024 ???

I was thinking about checking the cameras.CFG and state.CFG files for the planes that I fly the most in 2020 and see if they will work in 2024, or at a least edit the state.cfg file for the planes I fly and enter engine and HOBBS hours.

cameras and state .CFG files are buried down in the /AppData/Local/Packages/Microsoft.FlightSimulator####/LocalCache/simObjects/Airplanes/ directory/ cameras.CFG & state.CFG

A couple of years ago, I had to do a complete un-install / re-install of 2020. was wondering if I could update the engine/Hobbs hours for the planes using flight log totals from LittleNavMap application. I hunted around and found the directory where the .cfg files were lolcated, updated the hours, and when flying the planes again, they had the correct hours listed.

Just another thing I was thinking about…

Hardware upgrade???

Starting with Sublogics filght simulator on a Tandy Radio Shack TRS80 when it first came out, and then purchasing every version of the flight simulator thru 2006, hardware upgrades were based on the performance when the new version was installed.

Currently running:

Intel I9-9900KF CPU
16.0 GB ram
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 12gb memory.

1 tb of free space on the hard drive.

I’ll wait and see how it works, and then decide if I need to do an upgrade. If it slow or studders a bit, it could also be my internet speed where I live. I have a 30-50 mbps down load speed where I am at connecting through wifi. No cable/fiber where I’m at.

Not after 24H2 Update…

Formatted my PC clean upgrading to 24H2, with newer BIOS and drivers.

Benchmarked MSFS 2020 with the new NVidia driver but got worse results than what I had last year, but unfortunately I forgot to benchmark before the formatting, so I don’t know if it’s the new sim version that got worse.

The smart thing to do would be not to install it.

Recently bought a new HOTAS:

  • Gladiator NXT EVO ‘Space Combat Edition’ with Premium Grip
  • STECS Mini Plus

Last week I upgraded my CPU to the 9800x3D (from 5800x3D).
Will upgrade my RTX 4080 as soon as the 5090 launches.

I have both Xbox and PC so will have to load twice and will install first the Xbox X version to console, I’ve dedicated it solely for these sims.

I bought Seagate 1T Storage Expansion Card to my console, so I moved 2020 to this card because it’ll require more space than 2024 and 2024 goes to internal drive which has less space (about 850 Gb).
If all goes well and working ok, I will install 2024 to my PC E: drive with 2Tb SSD, which should be enough for now to both versions of sim.

Preparation for 2024

Just one or two questions, as I have not been following this closely.

Or is there a good Asobo page with all these questions answered?

1, Should we return nVidia control Panel to default ?
( as image scaling, filtering etc are 2020 settings)

2, Programs like " Lossless Scaling " do we remove them
or disable so as to start from a level playing field ?

3, What do we do about FBW and FSTL Traffic Injector etc ?
( do we leave it running )

4, Will there be a simple upgrade to 2024 in the Xbox app?
and will previous editions you have bought be relevant ?
to the purchase of 2024, as I was expecting to fully uninstall
and clean out my PC of any MSFS2020 before the download ?

5, Will our Control Settings for 2020 be still in the cloud
and interfere with 2024 or do we create a new Profile
completely to be on the safe side.

I had the same thing happen…cleared my NVidia shader cache and the stutters stopped. I now do this with every driver update and also tend to do a “clean install” of the NVidia driver and not the express install that saves any edits I made. I just then have to re-select the few things I change in NVidia app (max power plan and max frame rate).

There is no migration of control settings from 2020 to 2024, so they won’t interfere. Its worth noting down your current settings though, so you can reproduce what you want in 2024.
