On my own, Intel Core i7 8700K / 32 GB RAM / Geforce 1080Ti / 20Mbits internet bandwidth here, without budget to upgrade, so I’m hungry to see how MSFS2024 will behave …
At the weekend I upgraded to the latest BIOS, all of the latest hardware and graphics drivers, made sure the OS updates were installed and that I had a couple of hundred GB free on the SSD (going to want a large rolling cache for this one).
Obviously I broke the golden rule of only changing one thing at a time, which I knew was risky. I went for a flight on MSFS2020 last night and it had turned into a stuttery mess and I’ve no idea which of the updates broke it.
But at least I can start with everything current for the new sim. If that’s stuttering too then I’ll have to figure out what broke, but hopefully it’ll all be OK.
I also went through the graphics settings and all of my control bindings and screenshotted it all so I can set the new sim up.
Curious to know if you guys keep FS2020 in parallel, just in case.
I have a small drive but anxious to remove completly FS2020. Especially with all sceneries made myself, I found it risky to not have access to the old SDK.
But I know, backward compatibility should work… Just a bit nervous!
So I removed the most I could from community folder and content manager to give a clean 125 Gig to FS2024.
I’m not planning to uninstall 2020 immediately but I also don’t plan to run it again, if 2024 runs well enough. But the backwards compat is clearly going to be very hit and miss.
I have 2020 on PC gamepass which will not be renewed after this month unless 2024 turns out to be a shambles. Then I’ll uninstall 2020 as I’ve bought 2024 aviator.
Like many people I was WFH when 2020 came out so I could be right on top of installing it and trying it out the second it came out.
I’m in office until April now in a new role so I’m betting I don’t get any real time in the sim until the weekend. I can remote into my computer to install it so at least I can try it out tomorrow night. No hardware upgrades for 2024, although the CH Pedals will finally probably go in 2025.
Nothing really. Likely will download fs2024 premium edition to my Xbox. Try it out as is. Then begin downloading add ons back in. And when disk space is used up, either remove 2020, other games or get a larger Xbox flash drive
i treated myself with a new gaming monitor so as to have hdr and variable refresh rate
for the last month i flew pretty much only the 172g1000 so as to know it by heart, and get a proper feel for that new flight model in 2024,
and i’m checking areas i know from memory on a daily basis, to spot any changes in the scenery
ocd anyone? nahh haha!.. not quite
OR IS IT???
Ordered on Xbox. Dusted off my HOTAS One (last used in 2021). Particularly interested in ‘Career Mode’. And another attempt at a ‘round the world’ trip.
I ditched FS2020 a while back and have since prepared my rig by upgrading my graphics card from a RTX 2070 Super 8GB to a RTX 4080 Super 16GB. It boosted my performance a lot!
Recently i also placed an order on a AMD 9800X3D cpu, waiting for Black Friday sales to grab a new motherboard and 64 or 96GB DDR5 ram, possibly also another m2 drive for local caching.
Upgraded my drivers meanwhile, cleaned out trash from my system, uninstalled apps i no longer need. Terminated background tasks slowing down my system. All sorts of improvements to boost performance until the new hardware arrives.
Last hours until release i’ll be playing other games just to spend the time.
I backed up my yoke/throttle/mouse/keyboard settings (FS2020) so I’d have some reference when I set it up under 2024, but other than that, I’m planning on spending most of my time getting acquainted with 2024 and not worrying about reproducing my exact experience in 2020. Between the new planes, hopefully better scenery, different performance parameters, and new options, for several days or even weeks I’ll be busy figuring out what I just bought.
I revamped my AM4/ 5800X and RTX3090 based PC, which meant goodbye to the custom waterloop I had cooling the GPU and CPU. Eventually I will watercool the new CPU and GPU, but it cost me an arm and a leg for the new components, so that’ll come later. To keep costs down I’ll re-use the reservoir, pump and radiator from the old PC, just need new waterblocks and tubing.
I specced and built the new parts out with:
Asus ROG Strix X870-F mobo
Ryzen 9 9950X CPU
Corsair Vengeance 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6400MHz
1000w Be Quiet PSU
Be Quiet Pure Loop AIO CPU Cooler
Asus Tuf Gaming RTX4080 Super OC
I re-used the Fractal Meshify 2 XL case, 2x2tb M.2 drives and Corsair fans from my old PC in the new build.
I’m right on spec for top end specs for MSFS, so hoping performance won’t be an issue. I chose the 9950X over waiting a few weeks for the 9800X3D as I use my PC for creative work as well as gaming so it was a better fit for me with the higher core count.
In terms of controllers, I have the Winwing Orion 2 HOTAS throttle quadrant and stick, which I intend using. I do have a Honeycomb Bravo quadrant and the TCA Boeing yoke for civil flights though.
The kit I’ve got, I’m expecting 5-6 years before I start re-speccing and swapping stuff out, so although it is expensive, I fully intend on getting my money’s worth out of it all, just don’t tell the missus what I’ve shelled out
Hardware wise I only added 32gb more ram to get it up to 64, just for grins.
Finally got around to updating my bios to address the intel chip thing.
Updated my Windows 11 to 24H2
Installed the new official Nvidia app and the latest driver (566.14)
Cleaned up my ssd a little where it will reside.
Pre-installed the 2024 launcher.
Current specs:
Processor: Intel® Core™ i9-14900KF Processor
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z790-V
Memory: 64GB DDR5-6000MHz
Video Card: GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER - 12GB GDDR6X
2TB Samsung SSD for the Sim
Monitor: Acer 32" 1440p
Operating System: Windows 11 Home 24H2
Internet: 1GB
Last weekend I uninstalled MSFS2020 and did a fresh install of Windows 11. New graphics drivers and firmware updates for my Virpil controls.
I will wait and see how my AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, 32 GB RAM and RTX 2070 Super 8GB will handle the new sim. Bought that machine four years ago for MSFS2020 and never used it for anything else. Maybe next year with new generations of CPUs and graphics cards I will get a new system. But for now I hope it will be sufficient.
Upgraded my internet connection to 500 Mb/s fiber a few months ago, not only for MSFS2024, but the knowledge that the new sim would stream most of its data might have played a role in the decision
2020 is running well. I’ll wait and see how 2024 goes. “If it ain’t broke”…
The only thing I may do is take my computer downstairs and plug it into my router for a faster initial download tomorrow. I’m using powerline adapters so get max 8MB/s (64Mbit) download speeds in normal operation.
