When I switch to manual mode by pulling the SPEED or HDG, I can change them as needed. However, to let the FMS manage them again, I need to push the up arrow, but nothing happens — only altitude works, while speed and LNAV remain inactive, forcing me to continue manually.
you need to learn the A320 a bit i guess. When you fly off your planned FMC route, for example in HDG mode, and want to return to managed NAV you need to be inbound to the next waypont. So, as written above, use the DIR button and select the waypoint you want to fly to next. But this only works, if you fly in the direction of said waypoint, respectively in a certain range. So you might have to continue in HDG mode and turn towards that point before the A320 lets you go back to managed NAV mode.
During the flight I chose a random waypoint (the “other CDA” as I found it easier than look for one), it was way behind me and 3330nm away. Still, plane takes it. However, if you want to go back NAV mode without DIR, yes, you have to be on track for it.
That’s all
Maybe my post wasn’t clear. Even though I’m in HDG mode, I’m still closely following the flight plan for both altitude and heading. I’ve also tried reconnecting the autopilot, but it didn’t help. If I were far off course, I wouldn’t be asking this question. This isn’t specific to the A320; it’s hard to engage autopilot mode with any aircraft when you’re on the original flight path.
It’s difficult to know precisely what you are seeing, but the Bus can be finicky about such things.
Can you pull heading, then immediately push it and return to Nav?
Also, are you saying that you can’t pull speed and reset it to Managed?
Edit: I was thinking about your statement that this doesn’t work in ANY aircraft and I think it may be a matter of expectation bias.
A given FMS may not always understand that you want to follow a nav course just because you are over it. For instance, if the box didn’t sequence properly, it may still think you are interested in a leg segment behind you and refuse to engage nav.
But without seeing what you are doing, it could be something else entirely.
You guys are actually frustrating to read on these threads “learn the A320 more” well what do you think bro is trying to do here? I’ve looked. Where are the guides? Where are the learning materials? Do I need to actually qualify on a CPL to fly the airliner before I’ve learned it well enough to sim?
