I’ve got Open XR installed. I have it set to Developer mode and set to use Public Beta latest release. I got MSFS through Steam and got my G2 last week. All of my flight since have been in VR (can’t imagine going back). Anyway, I’m confused as to how I should be starting MSFS and what else and in what order. Do I start OXR and leave it open or do I only open it to make changes? Do I start MSFS through Steam and then once it loads go into VR & turn it on? Do i start (or even need) Steam VR? I also have WMR & WMR for Steam VR,
which should I be using if any? They both seem to open the standard WMR when I click on either icon. I just don’t know if I should just go into Steam and start MSFS and all VR related tasks will sort themselves out once I enable it in MSFS. I keep running into odd behaviors that are too inconsistent to track. Things like my mouse pointer will be on my monitor and moves until I put my headset on. Then the mouse pointer dissappear. Alt Enter back and forth a few times and keeping it in non-windowed mode seems to get it back. I’m sure that I was able to use my mouse though when in windowed mode. Sometimes the frame rate chugs along at 1-2 FPS sometimes I get 20 and that’s in the main menu screen. I’m not sure if it the order or way I’m trying to start things is the cause so I want to know what is the proper order and way to get VR up and running?
My understanding is 1) you only have to re-open OXR when you want to change an OXR setting, and 2) close down any VR/WMR stuff before starting MSFS in Steam then load your flight in 2D then CTRL-TAB to start VR and put on your G2.
Assuming that WMR is set to be the default app for openXR runtime (that is you have not changed it to be steamVR yourself in the steam VR developer settings menu), you don’t need steam VR open at all. You can just run the sim with the WMR portal open and enable VR when you are ready. If WMR portal is closed, the sim will automatically open it when you enable VR.
Thank You. That’s what I found. If I don’t open WMR before starting MSFS, WMR will open.
This post covers most of my same questions, in that:
I’m extremely confused what with all of the support apps needed, as to how to just simply launch the sim and begin flying. I purchased the sim directly from MS, not Steam, but as instructed by more than one YT tutorial, installed WMR, Steam, SteamVR, and OpenXR, the latter being a recommended tool for running the sim, though not required as the other three were purported to be.
I have been able to get a few VR flights going, but never with anything resembling ease. Would love a “click-by-click” checklist I can refer to and learn thru repetition that saves me a half hour or more of fumbling around hoping to get the sim inside my G2 headset instead of just the monitor.
I also can no longer find the OpenXR app I downloaded/installed when first setting this up. Would like to tweak the settings there, but it’s gone MIA on me. Where do I find and launch that app in Windows 10?
Thanks in advance and stay safe, everyone!
