How does the earth inductor compass in Spirit of St Louis work?

Title says it. I have only tried it briefly but it’s not moving at all. I can turn the heading but when I turn the aircraft nothing happens. Maybe it’s not supposed to?

If that thing doesn’t work, how could you navigate over the Atlantic?

Not sure if this applies to the sim (it’s above my pay grade), but here’s an article on the real world function of the compass.

Cheers! I’ll read it and experiment in the sim

I’ve just been trying to work this out myself and it seems the compass has not been modelled properly in the game.

The compass dial to the right of the seat should have a heading indicator, one rotation of the handle should move that 10 degrees, and the 0 - 9 on the inner dial allows you to set the single degrees accurately. The L - R indicator on the dash should then only point at the heading set.

In the game however if you point the handle at N for example, the indicator will show centre on either north or south, and if you set it to W, it will direct you east or west.

The only way to use this with any accuracy is to fly the aircraft at the desired heading, pause the game and centre the indicator at that heading.
