Hi, new simmer here. As I’ve been getting used to the layout and flying around some local airports, I noticed that the live traffic models are sometimes aircraft that aren’t included in any edition of MSFS. I’ve seen a couple PC-12s, A380s, and PA-28s, none of which are available to fly in any edition last I checked, as well as what seems to be a different version of the Baron (the G58 available has three-bladed propellers while the one I saw had two-bladed propellers). Are there additional lower-quality models of common aircraft included in the files just to represent the live traffic, or does an AI program generate them based on design data like how the world generation works, or is it something else? It’s not something I’ve seen before and I’m interested as to how it functions.
That’s your answer right there. Better models with correct liveries will be coming in the future, both on the official side (from MS and Asbobo) and from 3rd party modding teams.
Right now, we get a handful of generic lower res planes that will be substituted for whatever the real plane should be. It’s not accurate, but it’s what we have to deal with for the time being.
Ah, huh. That’s interesting. Do you know if MS/Asobo plan to improve the models to a flyable level and/or add more flyable aircraft later on, or just get them to the point that they look good on the outside? I’d love to see a flyable PC-12, I adore that aircraft.
More flyable planes will come in the future, both from Microsobo and 3rd parties.
AI models are not likely to be upgraded to being flyable.
I can totally see a PC-12 being done up for the sim at some point. If not by Microsobo directly, the likely by a 3rd party. Current turboprop offerings are a little on the lean side. We need more variety.
Just as an aside, during Q&A sessions, they’ve stated they’re working hard on getting licenses to use real planes and liveries. THe issue is that due to the current world climate and the issues most airlines are having, requests of “we want to use your livery and logos in our computer game” request from MS are for the most part being ignored by the airlines who have much bigger issues to deal with.
^^ This. You’re absolutely right. The airline industry has taken a huge hit due to the pandemic.
Sounds good. (Sorry if I don’t seem like I know that much, just not sure quite where to look.)
Do you think any of them will be in the base edition or will they mostly end up in the higher ones? Don’t fancy spending another $85 for more planes, that could almost buy a HOTAS to replace my janky mouse yoke, especially considering the ones in the premium editions seem to be lower-quality for some reason.
And yeah I do agree. Could use a couple more turboprops. The Caravan and King Air make sense since they’re fairly iconic aircraft, but some more interesting stuff would be lovely.
Ah, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I know the industry’s taken a massive hit, I’ve felt some of the effects of the human malware situation myself (still waiting on a 3070…). Nice to know there’s more to look forward to once things start to stabilize though.
You’re new. There’s a LOT of information in a lot of different sections of the forum. It’s not readily apparent to people who’ve never been here before. Searching helps, but it can only get you so far. Many of us have been here since launch day (or before for the testers) and followed every scrap of news on the sim so far. It’s a lot for you to catch up on.
That’s fair. I imagine proper sims are a lot more complicated than what I’m used to. Coming from someone who’s never experienced anything more realistic than War Thunder and is still figuring out how to read taxiway markings (are a lot of airports missing the taxiway markings or do I not know where to look/am expecting more markings than there actually are?), it’s… a lot. Definitely enjoying myself though, only have a few hours of flight time and I’m already looking into picking up a HOTAS as I’m running into limitations with the mouse yoke (namely that I can’t fly and click cockpit buttons at the same time).
(Also as a side note this has to be the most active and friendly forum I’ve ever been on so far looking through some of the threads, there’s very little salt like I see in a lot of other places.)
There’s plenty of salt here as well. You’ll discover that in time. But the mods tend to do a good job and keep it in check for the most part. And it’s not as bad as other forums I’ve been to in the past. I think that comes from it being a far more mature crowd. Most simmers tend to be older guys.
Yeah that makes sense. A forum with a good mod team is a rare thing in itself.
I’m not honestly likely to be super active myself, but I do like a good community discussion every now and then, not to mention it makes for a good way of getting help with things.
I made the changes myself in the game official files to make my downloaded liveries work with live traffic.
- Go to the Official folder and open the air traffic Generic TwinEngines, QuadEngines, etc. and open the aircraft.cfg files and change ICAO_Generic=1 to 0.
- Go to the Official A320 folder, and open the Aircraft.cfg and add the line ICAO_Generic=1 at the same place as the one from the Generic TwinEngines folder. This will force the sim to use the A320 model as generic instead of the basic default low-poly model.
- Then you need to have your downloaded A320 liveries to have a working AI model, and the aircraft.cfg file to be configured using the ICAO_Airline code and set AirTraffic =1.
- Go to your General Options, under traffic set the Use Generic model for AI traffic to on.
If things goes well, you should see your downloaded A320 liveries to be used as generic A320 model on your Live Traffic with matching ICAO codes.
Easiest way to check is if you can see the liveries as a parking aircraft at the gates. If you see them, they should work when they have a matching live traffic ICAO code.
Point 3, Where do you find ICAO_Airline code and set AirTraffic? Where should we insert? pls help
when you download a livery mod, go inside the folder, and you should see this aircraft.cfg file.
Open it with Notepad, and you should see something like this:
[FLTSIM.1]

You need the icao_airline to be set with the code, and you need to set isAirTraffic to 1. Like the example above.
so basically do this with every livery? . Thanks
