How much VRAM do I need for this sim?

3440x1440 Ultra, the most i’ve seen are 15.5 GB in DX12 FG (4090)

You are talking major league, I only have an 1070ti but I’m exactly looking for taking that route which I already started looking for the 48" oled wide screen Samsung got it on special

Hi guys, i am late to this party. I am trying to build a PC for MSFS 2020, and i am confused between the components i need to purchase. My current amazon carts have the following equipment;-

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
NVIDIA RTX 4060 OC 8GB VRAM
32 GB DDR4 3200
1TB 1.3 PCIE M2 SSD.

I want to run this sim at 1440p (ideally) with mostly high-ultra settings. Can yall let me know if I can do that with this build? If not, what settings do yall suggest? I am even open to exploring newer parts to match my settings goal as well.
I am new to this community so i apologize for my lack of knowledge

Thanks in advance.

Hi, there are at least a half dozen new PC builds since the new year, why not search out those and see what others have researched, recommended, bought?

I think you’d be better with an x3d chip for msfs2020, they perform really well with that sim.
8gb Vram is low for 2020 and just not enough for 2024 if you ever end up jumping sims. You would be better future proofing yourself as much as possible, 16gb Vram looks like the minimum now for a decent experience.

All the parts you spec ale at the lower end. This can be a VERY expensive hobby, and you need to have some headroom to future-proof your setup.
The stock aircraft are mostly abandonware, the stock airports aren’t the greatest, so addons and bigger displays and a bunch of controllers just add to the cost.

16gb is pretty much the minimum today. Who knows what it will be a couple of years down the road?

I guess what I’m saying is the rule of thumb for new projects applies - “take your budget, double it, and double it again.” Or look at other sims that have lower compute requirements.

Here is what I consider minimum spec, meaning machine enough to get me out of my Series X into a PC: Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz; 64GB DDR5 6000 C30; RTX 5070 Ti 16GB. Any less than that was just not worth it for me to leave MSFS/2024 on Xbox.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. It seems flight simming isn’t something i can afford now, since i am trying to use my tax money to build this gig. But I don’t know when can i afford something good. Tbh, this was my ultimate limit. I am not sure if i can get anything more than the above mentioned parts.

Why not get a Series X and have some fun on the cheap? Until 2 months ago I flew a Series X for 2 or so years and 1,000+ hours of flight time. Connected to an HDTV, a yoke & throttle quadrant, along with a keyboard and mouse, one can have a great deal of fun for much less than a struggle bus PC. The peripherals can be used on a PC down the road and the Xbox doesn’t cost much for all the fun one can have.

Addons. All aircraft and airport addons are made for PC unfortunately. I wanna sim for study level as i want to prepare for my airline sim eval checks. I am currently obtaining my multi engine rating, so i am getting close to that time where i need to prepare for interviews.

I am getting AMD RX7600xt for the same price as thr RTX 4060 but 16 gigs VRAM. Let me know if this is worth the deal. Thanks in advance!

So not true: I have a few hundred hours in PMDG 737s & 777s on Series X. And I’m an inactive licensed pilot too. There are other airliner models one can fly on a Series X too. Why not keep an open mind?

From what I can gather, that card lacks the raw power of some other cards in the same price range from other vendors. Though the 16gb Vram is definitely an advantage over the 4060. Though it’s definitely faster than my RTX3060 12gb :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. I would think you should be ok with it.

You can always do a free trial of other sims that have lower hardware requirements.

The “ideal specs” of 12gb of vram are obviously overly optimistic, like everything else about the release.

It’s funny, because before I upgraded to a pair of 16gb arc 770s, I was able to run 2020 at 4k on 2x50" tvs … on a pair of 1050ti with 4gb of vram each. definitely not the best, but kinda-sorta usable.

2024 definitely needs optimization, but right now they’re preoccupied with fixing bugs.
