How much VRAM do I need for this sim?

Specs:
RTX 3080 10GB (No OC)
Intel 13700KF (Intel turbo boost OC)
32GB 5600MHz DDR5
1TB Samsung 970 Evo (Sim is installed here)
850W ASUS 80+ Plat PSU
3440x1440 Monitor

I have a 3080 with 10GB of vram and yet I keep getting gpu spikes because of being over my VRAM limit. I have my texture resolution set to high (not ultra) and still get scenarios where my GPU VRAM is maxxed out at certain airports like KORD or ini’s KDTW/KLAX. This makes flying at particular airports insufferable with the constant stuttering when looking around and low framerate. I primarily fly in the USA and i’d say about half of the major airports I get this stuttering more or less. The other half is buttery smooth, like autogenerated airports or hand-crafted ones without too much detail.

Ive attached some screenshots of my performance graph at KORD in the PMDG 737.

As you can see, I am using 9.2GB out of the available 8.3GB the sim can use. The stuttering when panning is unbearable.

This is what it’s like panning the camera around.

Do I seriously have to buy a 3090 or a 4080 just to experience this sim smoothly? Any tips for reducing VRAM usage?

When I had my 3080 I was always running out of VRAM, but that was in VR. In 2D I ran 4K high preset and never ran out of VRAM, so it’s strange you are experiencing that at 1440p. If you are running at mostly ultra settings, perhaps drop them down to high and see if that improves things.

FWIW, I now have a 4080 and can run 4K Ultra and higher res VR with my previous VR settings with plenty of VRAM to spare.

16GB will be ok at the moment. Vram usage is limited since the xbox adaption by some „optimizations“. Most of the time I stay between 12 and 14GB. With excessive settings you can push it above but the times of more than 20 are gone.

24GB is a bit more future proof indeed.

I used to have a GTX 1060 6GB. These 6 GB were nearly fully used in 1080p. With lowering of some settings I was able to run at 1440p (but the normal wide, not your ultra wide). But as soon as I approached a high detail area, additional VRAM was needed, and afaik normal RAM is used for this purpose, but this is considerably slower!
Meanwhile I upgraded to an Intel ARC A770 (16 GB). I now run on 4K, mostly high, some ultra settings. VRAM is used up to 13 or 14 GB, never reached the 16 GB limit.

Have you worked it out? I’m having the same issue

No, you don´t need to buy a new card because game was already running fine before latest patches (e.g: after SU12). The memory is not released now and that leads to that behaviour and a severe FPS hit on dense scenery areas and most big cities. I have also the same issue with a 3080Ti (12 GB) even at Madrid city (medium size city with official airports only). Prior to AAU2 patch I was getting 40fps while I get now 30 fps and the same constant spikes, even when using G-sync.

Cheers

He is already using high (me too indeed). It´s not a problem of settings but about memory usage as I said. It was optimized before AAU2 and now it´s not. The same thing happened during SU10 beta testing last summer.

Cheers

Also DX11 uses way less VRAM than DX12…

I have an 8 GB 6600xt running at 1440 and don’t have this issue. You have a nice CPU, but it’s getting absolutely hammered as well, which is odd. It may be that your TLOD and/or OLOD settings are too high, or you have a ton of AI traffic going on. I would look at those settings and try reducing them.

You will have to prove it. I had a 6650 XT and I was having the same issue with 1080p DX11 High End Preset.

I’ll try when I get home from work later, but it may take a bit with my busy schedule.

Try Pressing Q (quick views) couple times with the performance monitor enable, you are likely going to experience stuttering and watch the gpu spikes (that’s due to the 8gb vram). That with the plane running (if you have the 737 try with it) on a runway of a major airport (KLAX).

My comments are only in regards to the original question if 10 GB is enough VRAM, and it is if you set the sim up to match your system. In my first screenshot, I’m at KORD with FSLTL running light. Normally I also have live multiplayer on, but I turned it off so I could set the time to day instead of locally night time. Frame rate is fairly consistent and you can see I’m running under the total allocated VRAM.

This one is the same settings overflying KORD, still mostly consistent.

Flying between KORD and downtown Chicago where scenery is more dense. A slight FPS drop, but again consistent and below allocated VRAM.

Same location only inside the aircraft and nearly locked at 60 FPS (my monitor’s limit).

I upped my resolution to 4k, and now you do see a VRAM overrun.

My settings, including AI traffic

Yes I get the occasional spike in frame times, but that wasn’t the question being asked and nothing like the near constant spikes as showing in the OP’s screenshots, It is by no means game breaking. I could probably tune it a bit more to eliminate the spikes, but I’m ok with my current experience since it only happens in dense areas. Just to address any questions about running mine in DX 12, that works best on my system for whatever reason. I don’t remember if DX 11 provided higher average frame rates, but I do know I had a lot more stuttering that lead to a worse experience.

I made a video after the SU12, with way less vram I get almost better performance. Some new setting sliders are added etc. Hope this helps!

SkyLane

I have an AMD RX 7900 XT w 20Gb VRAM, at 1440p I can manage to use up to 18,3Gb of it, most settings are at Ultra mind you. GPU utilisation is at 60% but CPU utilisation ( i7 13700k) is only about 20%… not that this info helps so much, my other machine a 9700K with a 3080Ti is hooked to a 75" 4K TV and runs it at 60fps and uses roughly 11Gb VRAM out of its 12…

Most folks running at 1080P all the way to UHD won’t chew up more than 8-9 GB of VRAM, and I’m on DX12 because I have a 16GB Intel Arc 770. (Guru3D VRAM Utilization)

These scenes below are 6.3GB used. I’m running a mix of High / Ultra at 1080, 100 TLoD/OLoD, Live Traffic, Live WX and FSLTL models. About 45 fps in-cockpit.

On approach, landing, rollout and taxi, I’m running about 7.5GB used and around 30 fps.

You’ll need at least 20gb to be safe…
If you use dx12 then it’s a given, DX12 will eat your VRAM…

But look mine , all maxed out in ultra , 1070ti paired with i7-10700k , and I don’t even see that my GPU it’s struggling

, why is that, it because I can push it a little farther or… Idk man , here’s a thing, I want to get those super thinking out of my head when it seems I’m running good {{ other topic {{
Let’s talk about the vram

My guess is because you’re in 1080p resolution. DX11 is probably part of it too because I see a lot of comments that it uses less VRAM than DX12, but not something I’ve personally tested.

32" ultrawide , but is not 2k , is a 2560x1080 , as my understanding is that dx12 is not working properly, or do i need a newest gpu
here’s another frustration , i havent got the 4070 super thinking of the i7-10k wont do the job , … so many lines , you follow
