How on Earth do you ascend or descend when requested by ATC

After some help here please, it’s so frustrating. So, I’m in a A320 Neo and I have the legacy control options implemented.

I’m struggling as the title says ascending or descending when asked to do so my ATC.
I’m on auto pilot, Have auto throttle enabled. In selected mode. I select my advised altitude and that appears on the screen. I then click the bottom arrow to engage selected mode, and the aircraft ascends and keeps going up. sometimes I get 2 beeps, and the auto pilot comes off.

Do I need to select a minus speed to descend using the knob next to the altitude knob? Or a plus speed? Or do I not need to input any speed. The aircraft is definitely in selected mode as I have no amber circle next to the altitude display.

I’ve tried all sorts. Hany help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Select desired altitude on autopilot panel (FCU) and push the ALT button. The plane will start descending, initially at 1000ft/min if you have not reached the calculated TOD point yet. I don’t use legacy cursor mode so don’t know how you click the knob to push it.

Leave speed managed by autopilot. Usually, you don’t need to touch it until touchdown.
