Currently I use Reverb G2 and to have my charts, SkyDemon, VATSIM client, notepad with Wacom tablet I bring Windows desktop to VR using the native desktop feature of Windows Mixed Reality.
Is there a way to bring Windows desktop to VR with Pimax Crystal? I mean when using OpenXR, not SteamVR (I know that there are some apps for SteamVR allowing this, but SteamVR performance with Crystal is much worse compared to OpenXR).
Embedding desktop windows is a feature of the platform, it’s not tied to OpenXR or no OpenXR.
Certain platforms implement that (eg: WMR, but it’s sort of wonky) or there are specific add-ons on other platforms (eg: OVR Toolkit on SteamVR).
Unless either Pimax implements this feature in Pimax Client or someone writes something like OVR Toolkit for OpenXR, this isn’t problem that’s going to solve itself.
I have a prototype for the 2nd solution (something like OVR Toolkit but for OpenXR) but it requires a lot more work to be usable. Time I won’t have for a while. Looking for a C++ and C# developer to contribute.
I also used XS overlays, etc., and used little navigation maps, etc., side by side in the cockpit.
It was very convenient when I suddenly wanted to review the flight plan.
Now that we have the XRTOOLKIT for satisfactory speed, these are no longer possible.
I would be happy if I could manage it.
What is the current load of this software?
It’s not finished yet so it’s too early to test it…
The currency of my country, the JPY, is getting weaker day by day under the influence of the foolish Prime Minister Kishida, so I always unconsciously get impatient when considering GPUs, CPUs, and overseas tools.
I desperately need this feature. I used it a lot with the Quest 2 where I could pick any regular desktop window and bring it into the VR session, move it, zoom it, tilt it… With glider tasks, we often use a program called XCSoar which is also used IRL as we have a connector that makes it talk with MSFS. It’s an essential tool that we need inside the VR session.
If anyone from Pimax is reading this, make it a priority please! No VR device should not offer this feature IMHO.
I use All In One v.3 tablet from Flightsimulator.me. It allows (VNC feature) remote capturing and controlling the desktop of another PC (I use old notebook). Many apps can be run on the remote PC and communicate with the sim PC (vPilot, any mapping app, apps communicating via FSUIPC/WideFS).
It works perfectly for me. I can even browse the internet midflight.
As a PPL(A) SEP(L) pilot I operate this way the VFR navigational app - SkyDemon, the location of the airplane are transfered to remote PC via xMapsy.
Side benefit - some apps offloaded from the main sim PC, leaving more CPU/RAM for the sim.
Looks cool, although I’m not sure XCSoar would work inside that tool. It needs constant communication with MSFS and we need to interact with it either with the mouse or keybind. Not sure how to set all this up on a remote computer.
The same with SkyDemon - VFR airplane navigation app. Check your application on remote PC with XMapsy or similar app cable of broadcasting the GPS position updates across your LAN. If you can configure remote GPS in your application - it will work.
Then you just capture the screen and mouse of the remote PC in All In One tablet.
I think I can make it work with XCSoar and the XCSimSoar app (the one that relays the data from MSFS) as they both connect together by specifying an IP address, which could be another computer.
But is the mouse capture of the remove PC working well inside the tablet ?
Yes they work well. In case of issues the author of the tablet provides quick support. In my case we provided special version of VNC for remote PC, optimized for Pimax Crystal.
Start applications on the external PC (vPilot and SkyDemon in my case).
Start the apps on the main PC to enable communication between the main PC (with the sim) and the external PC (in my case xMapsy for SkyDemon, and vPilot Host).
Run MSFS, start flight, enter VR.
Open AllInOne tablet.
Click on VNC in the tablet, then click connect.
If you hibernate your external PC (old notebook in my case) you don’t need to repeat steps 2 and 3.
Is that the case with multiple monitors? That’s what I did way back in the past with the Quest 2. Although I think that allowed for specific app windows.
If it brings in all monitors then it would be a problem.
old thread but steamvr + openxr steamvr mode seems to work in virtual desktop and the “float in window” choice, the window then appears in the vr world.
