How to change tail number when there is no aircraft.cfg file?

Some default aircraft, C-172 Classic for example, do not seem to have a readily visible aircraft.cfg file, where the tail number can be changed as others have.

Is it possible to change the tail number of those aircraft and if yes, can somebody suggest how to do it?

Thanks a lot!

Roberto

When you open the aircraft selection menu, there will be a few other options on the left side - one of which is “ATC Options.” Click that, and you can change tail reg, flight number, call sign, add “Heavy” to the callsign, and maybe one or two other things as well.

That being said, it doesn’t seem to stay - you may have to change it each flight. Hard to say if that’s a glitch, oversight, or intentional.

If you want to change them all, try this: https://www.msfsaddons.org/freeware/atcrenamer

I am aware of the change of tail number, within the game, but it is not permanenet.

There is a way of changing the tail number of an aircraft permanently.

It is a bit of a log search for the folder but, for example, for the C-172 G1000, it is in:

MSFS 2020->Official->OneStore->Asobo-Aircraft_C172SP-as1000->SimObjects->Airplanes->Asobo C172sp_AS1000

In this last folder, there is a file:
aircraft.cfg

And within this file, under the section:
[FLTSIM.0]
there is a line of code reading:
atc_id=“XXXXX” ; tail number

You can change the XXXXX to anything you want (using Notepad) and that will keep the tail number of that aircraft permanently to what you changed it to.

If you do the same search for the Classic C-172, you don’t see an:
aircraft.cfg file, and therefore there is no obvious place to do that change.

So I was wondering if it is at all possible to permanently change the tail number.

Thanks again.

Ah, I see - that makes sense.

Strange that there’s no .cfg - looks like it was “archived” which apparently encrypts the file as well. As a side note, I tried changing the tail on my G1000 C172 but for some reason it didn’t work. Not sure what’s up with that.

Anyway, though, perhaps it would be possible to copy the G1000 .cfg and paste it over in the classic folder? Doesn’t look like there’s a whole bunch that needs to be tweaked if you wanted to try that. I might give it a shot later today as well, I’m a bit curious about it now.
