[HOW TO] G1000 NXi Keyboard Entry - Quick Tip

I will not describe the whole NXi usage, as there’s already plenty of existing references here
Just a quick tip for those that come for the first time, as myself, to the Flight Plan creation while a flight is already loaded and want to use keyboard entry in the available fields

Ref: as Matt re explained, the data entry is allowed only on fields with continuous underscore chars (underline)

After having pressed push button (1), turn the FMS outer knob one notch to the right (2), then the highlight will step down once and make the focus on the Origin field for data input (3) :

After the Origin field get its focus (1), turn the FMS inner knob one notch to the right (2), which will bring the “Waypoint information” window :

Here’s the resulting “Waypoint information” window displayed with the first input field active. At this point, we are able to input ICAO by browsing using outer and inner FMS knobs

If we want to use keyboard input, just click on the small icon which looks like to a small keyboard, in order to activate data entry using the keyboard :

The keyboard entry is activated (1) and direct data input using the keyboard is allowed (2) :

Sample of ICAO input made using the keyboard, once done, click again on the small keyboard icon, then click the ENT push button just above the FMS knob

This can be used the same way for Destination or Enroute input fields

No need to click again on the keyboard icon, just click ENT once the required waypoint is displayed.

Right, as multiple ways, mine was made doable by the NXi dev team (my goal was only to show it exists, though haven’t made the precision of multiple ways, again I will not explain the whole things other already done) and yours as another solution available, which is simpler and straight forward :+1:
Surely I’ve missed plenty of other points, just keep it short and just useful I hope

This doesn’t work for me. I need to click on the keyboard icon OR somewhere close to it. Then the keyboard icon changes color back to the the way it looked before invoking PC keyboard entry mode.

If I don’t do that, the ENT push button doesn’t do anything.

Anyone else notice this? Is it a recent change?

I still don’t need to click on the keyboard icon again before clicking ENT.

I’ll try it again tomorrow when I’m at my PC. Maybe I’m a rev back. I thought I was on the latest version but I can’t be sure till I check it.

I verified that I have the latest version. Started digging in to see why we’re getting different results; think I’ve got it sorted out.

I’m going to guess that you’re using the “Legacy” Cockpit Interaction System (under Accessibility options).

I was using the new “Lock” option. When I switched to the Legacy mode, I was able to press the ENT key straight away just like you described. No other click needed.

When I switch back to the new “Lock” mode, then I had to click the small keyboard icon again (or somewhere else on the screen) before I could press the ENT key.

Tried it back and forth a few times and saw the same results each time.

I hope that the Working Title team will be able to make both Cockpit Interaction System modes work the same. It sure is nice to be able to go straight to the ENT key.

I’ll report it via the WT Discord as well as opening a Zendesk ticket. Others may want to do the same, especially if you’re using the new Lock system.

Is there a shortcut or variable to assign this to a button?
