Performance Tips for MSFS 2024
Attention: Some of these methods can cause system instability if used incorrectly. Use them at your own risk and always make backups where needed.
I use an RTX 4070, which was a high-end GPU when MSFS 2024 released. Still, I experienced low FPS, high latency, and frequent stutters. After a lot of testing and research, I found several methods that significantly improved my performance. I am sharing them here in case they help others too.
Framerate Limit (Best Improvement in My Case)
Set a Framerate Cap (Even with Frame Generation)
Capping your FPS helped me more than anything else.
You can enable the framerate limiter even when Frame Generation is turned on by editing the FrameLimiter option in theUserCfg.opt
file.
Set the cap to half of your monitor’s refresh rate.
For example, if your monitor is 120Hz, set the limit to 60 FPS.
This reduces latency and smooths out stutters.
Updating DLSS/FSR
DLSS Swapper Guide (Just do this for MSFS 2024)
Use the Latest DLSS or FSR Versions
Using a tool like DLSS Swapper, you can update to the latest DLSS and FSR versions. This can lead to better performance and image quality.
Important: After every MSFS update, you may need to reapply the newest version.
Resizable BAR
Try Disabling Resizable BAR (ReBar)
In my case, turning off ReBar didn’t change anything. However, some users reported better stability or performance without it.
To disable ReBar, you need to enter your BIOS. The exact location of the setting varies by motherboard, so search online if you’re unsure.
Warning: Disabling ReBar may cause FPS drops in other games.
Toggling Frame Generation
Turn Frame Generation On and Off Three Times
Some users claim this method fixes stuttering issues. You simply toggle Frame Generation on and off three times.
In my experience, this caused major problems, including severe stutters and graphical glitches. Try it only if you’re curious, but I do not recommend it.
TLOD and OLOD
TLOD and OLOD (Terrain and Object Level of Detail)
These two settings have the largest impact on performance.
You need to experiment to find the best values for your system.
There are also detailed guides online showing the visual and performance impact of each level.
Settings Guide
Texture Resolution
Set Texture Resolution to High or Medium
This setting has a huge effect on VRAM usage.
Unless you have lots of VRAM headroom, avoid using Ultra.
Dynamic Settings and Mods
Dynamic LOD Tools
There are community tools that automatically adjust TLOD and OLOD based on your FPS. They are not officially supported, and I won’t link them here, but a quick search should help you find them.
If you want to stay within the boundaries of officially allowed tools, use the built-in “Dynamic Settings” feature in MSFS. It adjusts settings based on performance in a similar way.
MSI Afterburner/RTSS
Uninstall Afterburner
Some users reported, that Afterburner causes some problems with the installation of MSFS 2024. However, with Afterburner you get a really great fps counter and it doesnt consum that much of your PC.
RTSS
Included in Afterburner is RTSS. It basically can give a game a fps cap. It is extremely great and you can experiment with it. Besides of this, it also blocks your FPS to go crazy, so less stutters!
I have to say, even though they claimed to have optimized the game, it’s still pretty much unplayable for some users. I mean, it’s ridiculous that my RTX 4070, one of the best GPUs available at the time of release, can barely handle high settings! I really hope they’ll deliver some solid updates soon.
These are the tweaks that helped me the most. I will update this post if I find more improvements. This is the link to the Settings Guide
Feel free to share your own tips and suggestions in the comments and I will add them to this post.
