I love heli-simming!
What would you consider a successful hover?
Keeping inside a 10 foot or 5 foot or 0 foot radius?
2 foot elevation changes, etc?
I know real pilots can keep it rock steady but sometimes I can achieve that for 3 seconds.
Of course different aircraft offer different degrees of difficulty.

There are varying degrees to what could be considered success. I feel it is more important to achieve what you, yourself would consider a success.

When you first start out, I would consider keeping it within a 30’ horizontal circle and 5-10’ vertical position a good goal. In a real aircraft, the instructor would only start you off on one control at a time. Which is why I recommend keeping the tail rotor assist on until you get the hang of how the cyclic and collective respond. Then add the yaw component as you improve.

Don’t worry about what you think you should be able to achieve, or compare yourself to other helisimmers. The object is to achieve what you consider progress. Keep practicing, do the exercises in the videos, or your own exercises, and one day it will all come together.

For most students working with an instructor, there is a point usually between 6-12 hours where it all of a sudden “clicks” in their brain and hovering becomes second nature. Without an instructor I would double the amount of time it could take. Add in sim limitations and it may take even more time. Don’t give up. It’s important to stay consistent and take breaks if you are getting frustrated.
