How to Uninstall and reinstall without downloading entire MSFS

As the title suggests, can someone with experience let me know the best method to uninstall and reinstall MSFS without having to download the entire thing?

I purchased direct via the Microsoft Store. (I have Premium Deluxe Edition). I have a separate SSD which is dedicated to MSFS and all the files (including Manual Cache/Rolling Cache) are there.

This recent patch (23 December) has caused an issue for me whereby the MSFS app when clicked reverts to the Microsoft Store app continually and won’t open.

I tried all the suggestions emailed to me via Zendesk, but none worked.

Hence, my final resort is to uninstall/reinstall.

Appreciate any assistance.

Can we know what steps you have already taken?

I 've just paid and installed a STD version of MSFS2020 into my PC, but got just like 1.27GB or something and is not launching to the next step to dowload the rest or anything.

Currently stuck into an stupid and dissaponting error :frowning:

Already uninstalled and did the install again only to get the same error :frowning:
Help please-and happy holidays!!!

Hi @ DORRAGER

here are the steps I’ve followed thus far but to no avail. (Copied from Zendesk email)

Thanks for contacting Microsoft Flight Simulator today.

    • Type: WSReset.exe and press “Enter”.
    • Restart the computer and check.
  • Make sure all the updates in the Microsoft Store

    • Open the Microsoft Store App on your computer
    • In the top right-hand side corner of the Microsoft Store, click on the Arrow icon or the three-dot menu
    • Go to Downloads and updates.
    • Click “Get updates
    • Update all
  • Double-check that Windows has the latest update

    • Select Start
    • Go to Settings
    • Open Update & Security
    • Select Windows Update
    • Check for Updates
  • Log out and (re)install the Xbox App

  • Step 1: Log out of the Microsoft Store

  • Step 2: Log out of the Xbox App (beta) (if installed)

  • Step 3: Log out of the Xbox Companion App (if installed)

  • Step4: Uninstall the Xbox App (beta)

  • Step 5: Uninstall the Xbox Companion App

  • Step 6: Reboot the computer

  • Step 7: Sign back in the Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Step 8: (Re)install the Xbox App (beta) from here

  • Step 10: Sign in the Xbox App (beta) with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft Flight Simulator

Not saying it will fix it but I always run it if having trouble with anything.
1.click on windows button bottom left
2. type cmd in the search bar
3. click on run as administrator
4. once box open type in the follows exactly as i have: sfc /scannow and hit enter.
5.Just wait until it finishes and it will say if it found any issue’s or not and whether they was repaired.

running sfc /scannow will repair any corrupt files.

Also might sound silly but have you actually been able to install the latest update in the actual simulator?

I would suggest :

:slight_smile: Run the game as administrator .
:slight_smile: Troubleshoot compatibility and try to run the game again.
:slight_smile: Creat a new user with full permission and try again.
:slight_smile: Check your firewall.

If the problem won’t go away, may your registry file is infected by virus,

Good luck!

Hi @DORRAGER

Tried your suggestion but to no avail. (ie sfc/scannow)

PS: this issue started after downloading the latest patch. Haven’t been able to start the sim since. Keeps reverting to the Microsoft store app.

@TarmacMussel1

Tried all your suggestions (except the New User), but to no avail. Don’t want to create a new user, would like to avoid that avenue.

Did the sfc/scannow run and finish?
Have you tried just uninstalling the msfs app thing just in the store shows as 1.40 gbs for me.
Then go back in the store and redownload it.

go to windows button and search add or remove programs then in apps and features screen click on search the list and look for Microsoft flight sim app

click on advanced options.

can try repair option if you like or just uninstall and re-install from the store if repair doesn’t work.

Did you buy it on steam or windows store if windows store check the digital ownership is installed as few updates back it somehow became uninstalled and my sim wouldn’t start worked after I re-installed it.

Hi @DORRAGER

Yes, I did run the sfc/scannow and it finished the operation. It mentioned it repaired a few files (it did not mention what/which specific files were repaired). I then clicked on the MSFS app (run as admin) but it still reverted to the Microsoft Store app.

I have all 3 MSFS related apps (ie Digital Ownership, MSFS, MSFS Premium Deluxe) in Microsoft Store (same as you). I did try the repair option and it didn’t resolve the issue. I purchased MSFS directly via Microsoft Store.

So are you suggesting that uninstalling the MSFS app via Microsoft Store only deletes the app and not the entire program ( ie 100+ Gb)?

Appreciate your time and effort.

I have similar problems, always need to reinstall everything on my external SSD. For me it worked better if I started to disconnect the SSD, reconnect it, and then try to run the update. Might be an issue with the USB connection.

@cybermike99

Interesting…disconnect SSD and reconnect.

I haven’t experienced repeated issues with un/reinstalling MSFS on my SSD. This is the first time I’ve had an issue of this magnitude whereby I have tried all the suggestions from Zendesk and other areas here in the forum. Hence, why I’m contemplating un/reinstall.

I may try your suggestion if the un/reinstall option doesn’t resolve it.

check this on the outside chance it fixes your problem with MS Store downloads.

I don’t know if it is the same with the Microsoft store version but here is what I did:

  1. Copy the Packages folder somewhere safe. (This is the bulk of the data)
  2. Uninstall then re-install MSFS
  3. Copy the Packages folder back to where you want it before starting MSFS
  4. Start MSFS, when it asks where the data folder should be, navigate back to where you put the Packages folder.

MSFS won’t re-download any of the Packages folder. However, it will update it if it is out of date.

Yeah will just delete the app part in the store check it is the one with a small file size I previously had the sim not start and just uninstalling and reinstalling the store app fixed it straight away.

Would definitely try this first before re-installing the whole sim as there is nothing to lose.

@MalexPrime

many thanks, I’ll give that a try.

@DORRAGER

Many thanks I’ll also give that a try.

I was having issues with my Steam installation. I would start the game and it would not get to the Welcome screen. As odd as this sounds, the problem was with the Test Pilot liveries. Were you an alpha tester? If so, what I did was I deleted the Test Pilot liveries from the fs-base folder. That worked for me. Good luck.

@MikeFS11

I wasn’t part of the testing group. Ergo, it won’t be the liveries.

In any case, I appreciate your input.
