HP Reverb G2 issues - frequent Audio disconnect, freeze, reconnect

Olaf Schnapauff Today at 16:26

Every couple of minutes, in VR, I get a speaker icon in the display, label “57”, then a Windows chime, sound moves from Reverb to normal desk speakers for a few seconds, then back to the reverb, and a label “50” displays over the speaker icon in the middle of the Reverb display.

Steam VR theater mode off. All drivers up to date (MSI ace 570, incl all drivers and software). AMD 5950X, Nvidia 2080TI. Power saving was turned off for the reverb in device manager, did not make a difference.

Used Reverb G1 for the VR Beta, there things worked fine. Switched to G2 during Beta and issue started. Issue remains also now in the Sim update 2 / GA VR release.

Maybe the cable is loose at the top of the headset.

Thanks - no it is not, set and the marker dot fits the edge as it should. Also, as it works stable in DCS with SteamVR this does not look like a cable / Hardware issue unfortunately

I’m not sure it is something than the cable. I’m not using the clip which can break easily. Instead, I’ve attached the cable to the back of the headset using 1 of the Valve Index Velcro :grinning: and I’ve also attached it with another narrower velcro strip, next to the left headphone so that the part of the cable between the plug and the audio is not moving at all (like with the Valve Index which has this by default and in plastic).

I’m having the same issue with my G2 and 2070 Super, I get massive stutters, freezes, while seeing volume adjustments. Let me know if you find a solution, thanks!

What is your system config ? Please file a bug in zendesk also incl dxdiag and msinfo please

I have the RTX2080Ti and my experience is very good. I have most sliders up at ultra. Render scale at 100 in FS.

First it was pretty bad, but after installing OpenXR Dev Tools, switching on latest preview OpenXR runtime and setting Motion Reprojection off and render scale at 50, it’s much better than I thought it would be. Love it. My CPU is i7-8700K 3.7GHz.

I had to stop overclocking or sim would crash my computer (goes black). Still very good all in all.

I’m having the same issue with
5950X SMT OFF, PBO ON Curve Optimiser at -23 all cores with 500/230/230 limits.
3090FE stock
X570 MSI Tomahawk with beta bios AGESA 1.1.9.0
32GB 3600 CL16 G Skill trident neo OC to 3800 with 1900 FCLK.
Reverb G2
Windows store edition

I didn’t notice this issue before I went with AGESA 1.1.9.0 BIOS but that may have been because my system was very unstable with random restarts and CTD with Flight Sim. Now I have The PBO running well and FS didn’t crash once with an A320 IFR flight from Heathrow to Dublin using autopilot. Open XR is custom 100, reprojection off. Flight sim is 100 render with TAA and ultra everything.

I get the same issue you reported perhaps every 5 mins or so. Could it be the X570 USB issue? I’m plugged in the back on the motherboard using the adaptor on a USB 3.2 gen 2 port, I haven’t tried any other game to see if it is specific to FS2020. I also tried turning off the sleep on the headset via device manager.

Hi,

my G2 only works on the USB-C ports, both back and front. in USB-A ports I get the dreaded 7-14 error, no device detected…

OnUSB - c it works but gets the audio disconnect and freeze errors every few minutes to few seconds - unusable. Both on d1 and d5 MSI Ace x570 bioses- so it is not only the newest AGESA. AMD chipset drivers are latest from MSIs website (dated Dec 11).

take the audio off and use earplugs

Anyone find a solution to this that doesn’t involve using a completely different set of headphones? I’m running into the same issue where the sim will randomly switch to my external speaker, and then switch back to the reverb audio, sometimes with lengthy pauses inbetween.

For what it’s worth, my reverb audio shows up in the sound settings as “Realtek USB2.0 Audio” which might be a clue that something is wrong. If there’s any workaround aside from replacing the headphones, I’d appreciate it!

I had a similar issue in that I couldn’t get the G2 to work. It turns out the plug that goes into the headset is so deep set you can’t really see if it’s fully inserted. HP ought to have a better way to tell if the headset plug is properly seated just to avoid folks overdoing as well as those not inserting it far enough. The printed instructions ought to have a QR code for each language to take one to much more detailed setup instructions at HP online. There’s like zero instructions on how to adjust the interpupillary distance and where to find it in the Windows Mixed Reality settings section that gets added to Windows 10 Settings - and the user has to figure out that you can’t change the settings in Windows but the Settings display does show you how twiddling the physical adjustment changes the IPD.

That is actually my preference, I really did not care for the off ear headphones. I removed them and use earbuds plugged into my PC Creative sound port.

Hi - appreciate that using earplugs might be your preference, but it is not a solution to a product with earphones not working correctly- I bought it with earphones and expect them to work.

Cable: It has a dot marker to align with the VR Headset when correctly plugged in. In my case it is correctly plugged in and the issue persists.

Had the same issue with dropping audio and freezes. I solved it by using the USB adapter dongle and plugging it into the FRONT of my case. Maybe try that as well.

Not sure if it’s worth a topic unto itself and this seemed like the best place for a Reverb G2 use query.

Question is, when you put on and remove your G2, do you loosen and reattach any Velcro straps?

I have a very snug fit with the straps and am following the advice that I read somewhere that you get the best view if the rear strap is under your occipital lobe (the bulge in the back of your head).

I haven’t been removing and reattaching my Velcro straps at all for fear that I’ll eventually wear them out if I do (I’ve done that with other Velcro straps, e.g., on my down parka).

So my means of donning the G2 is to lever the “helmet” up, press the mask tightly against my face to slightly compress the foam insert padding, pull the rear of the “helmet” down over the back of my head (I hear a bit of creaking as I do), and, Voila’!, I’m good to go. Just wondering if I’m gong to wear something else out instead and whether the Velcro is replaceable with some effort. Looking at the strap setup, replacement doesn’t seem likely. I don and remove my headset numerous times during one VR session because all the controls I want aren’t readily accessible in VR mode, e.g., loading and saving .FLT files, even trying devjack1240’s MSFS-windowed hack: Cannot load/save flight files while in VR - #6 by devjack1240

With the Index you can put the back first then pull out the headset and release it on your face, doing the reverse for removal.

I find the G2 plastic 1/4th the thickness and more fragile, so I tend to gently pull out the back instead. I have a short hair cut which helps too

Please do not hiljack threads for a completely different topic but open a separate one. This is about G2 audio disconnect issues

You are right. Here is the solution solving this for me:

PSA: Get better engine sounds with the Reverb G2 (and probably other Headsets) 🔵 - #20 by CptLucky8

Hi,
I got my Hp Reverb G2 today and I’ve had the exact problems from the first flight and it seems to appear every 5 minutes or so. Since I only have the headset as my audio I cannot verify that the audio switches from the headset to the desktop audio but I assume it does. It changes the volume from 100 to 65 (which is my master volume in windows). The game sometimes continue without sound but then it can also get black for 5-10 seconds and the it returns to normal.
I first thought it could be a loose cable but it’s not the case. It must be something with the USB-C connection. I will try using a USB-C to USB3 and see if it resolves my problem. I now have the HO adverb G2 connected to a USB-C in the back of the computer. Disconnecting the sound and move to a headset could be a solution but getting new drivers seems like a better solution. I know that Oculus Rift S had problems to connect with some USB drivers on my old ASUS motherboard when I gave that 3590K to a kid who wanted VR. Buying a new separate USB card was the solution there.

My current setup is a MSI Tomahawk MAG Z490, 10900K stock speed with Noctua NH15, 32 Gb ram, Samsung V-Nand860 EVO 1 TB, Samsung V-Nand960 EVO plus 1 TB, ASUS Strix 2080Ti.
