HTC Vive Focus Vision

Thanks for the follow up.

That stinks. This headset should have been at least a slight upgrade to the g2 in all areas where it matters.

The sunset of the g2 and no updated offering from Valve, and this missed opportunity by HTC really leaves folks like us with no options.

Sorry to hear all that mate. It’s a pity you didn’t have the DisplayPort adapter to properly test PCVR.

I hear what you’re saying about Fresnel lens and that’s also one of my biggest concerns. However, I have a lot of experience with fresnel lens and I’ve found that with proper ipd and face placement I can generally get a good result.

Time will tell if my preordered Vive Focus Vision w/DP adapter (which should get here sometime next week) can give me a better experience with msfs2020 compared to my Meta QPro/rtx4090/Link Cable. If not, then like you, it’s going back for a refund.

Thank you. Looking forward to your experience.
With the Reverb I got a third party face mask to bring my eyes closer to the lenses, and that worked like a charm to enlarge the sweet spot a bit. And I got used to moving my head more than my eyes to look around and keep a sharp image.
So Fresnel lenses would have been fine if the rest was as well.

May be the same can be done for the Vive.
And if in time people/HTC find solutions for the issues I found, who knows, I might reconsider.
But fingers crossed the ideal Reverb replacement is at the horizon somewhere, for a decent price.

Thought this tear down might be interesting for some. Certainly seems to be a well built headset (uses a magnesium alloy chassis)

Ya, soooo many bits and pieces eh. I just got a shipping notice for my new VFV/DP adapter from my local Vive store. So, I should get it in ~2-3 days (Thursday/Friday).

My first priority after setting it up is to try out the DP adapter with msfs2020. I’m pretty excited about all this. Always nice to get new toys to play with, lol! Cheers,

Ok, I got my nice new Vive Focus Vision (VFV) with DisplayPort streaming adapter yesterday. To make a long story short, I’m in the process of returning it to my local Vive store for a refund. I went through their return process +2.5 years ago with a preordered Vive XR Elite headset so I hope this return goes as smoothly.

The main things I didn’t like were the typical Fresnel lens circles, glare, and god rays. Plus, the vertical FOV was much less than with my QPro. For flight sims, vertical FOV is pretty important if you want to see more of your cockpit instruments imho. I believe that Meta has recently commented that they think that vertical FOV is a high priority for them right now, and I agree with that.

A somewhat minor point, but I also found that some SteamVR apps did not work properly with the VFV controllers. I probably could have modified these with SteamVR controller binding options and/or waited for developers to fix these.

The DisplayPort streaming adapter worked very well and I did notice a bit better performance (~10%) compared to my QPro/rtx4090 with an official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 gen2 type-c port at 650mbps encoding bitrate. Also, distant objects and cockpit clarity looked a little better (within the limiter VFV sweet spot). However, this didn’t make up for their poor Fresnel lens, for me anyway. There are always tradeoffs on all these things so you just need to find out what’s most important to you imho.

I did find that the headset was very easy to setup and the streaming hub software was easy to use. It was also very comfortable, but not as comfortable as I think my QPro with Golbular Cluster top strap is.

I just wish that Vive had of included pancake lens with Qled/micro led backlight screens, with local dimming, like my QPRo.

Anyway, just my opinion but I can’t recommend the Vive Focus Vision as a dedicated PCVR headset with msfs2020.

Just an aside note; I also tried out a Pimax Crystal Light over the last 2 days and I’m in the process of retuning it for as refund as well, lol! Maybe the upcoming Pimax Super OLED headset (with pancake lens), that I have preordered, will work better. Time will tell I guess.

Thanks very much for your feedback, it’s very helpful and balanced. From what you describe it doesn’t sound to me like the Vive Focus Vision is a worth while improvement over my still functioning (for the moment) G2.
I think my eggs are looking more likely to be placed in the Bigscreen beyond basket in the not too distant future now :+1:

If I were you mate I’d just stick with your G2 until you absolutely need to update to win11 24H2. You might get another year out of your G2. If you later need to update to win11 24H2, maybe there will be better headset options out there then.

The BSB might be worth considering but in PCVR life, base stations and lighthouse tracking are kinda getting a little long in the tooth now imho.

I have a +5yo Vive Pro1 with Etsy GearVR lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and Index controllers. While this still works very well, my QPro/rtx4090 Pro controllers track 99% as well. My VP1 performance is a bit better (~10%) than my QPro but my QPro has much less SDE.

Like everything VR, there’s always +/-'s, imho. Cheers.

Thanks for the follow up.

I ordered a vive focus vision and cancelled the order. I ordered a pimax crystal light and cancelled the order. Both cancelled after i did some reading.

Seems we have no great wired VR headset choices currently for MSFS.

The bigscreen beyond is probably the current best choice but my concern is that much like Pimax, they are going to iterate annually leaving folks behind. Then with the nature of this being a custom to the user headset, selling it is going to be difficult.
