Looks like we have a new kid on the block. Unfortunately, no pancake lens or micro-oled screens, but still looks very interesting, especially with Display Port compatibility. I plan to preorder one and I’m looking forward to seeing how this compares to my QPro/rtx4090 with Link cable. Time will tell I guess.
Edit; I have now preordered this (au$1899). Fingers and toes crossed, lol!
Ya, of course I wish it had pancake lens and micro-oled screens. I’m hoping that DP plus the higher res (and maybe adaptive contrast like my Q3 now has with v69) will make this look and work well with msfs2020. Again, time will tell I guess.
Ya, that’s pretty well the only hands-on review I’ve seen so far. Sounded pretty positive though.
Personally, I’m not expecting miracles given the lcd screens and fresnel lens. I’m just hoping that between 2448x2448 res, 120 FOV, auto-IPD, eye tracking, and DisplayPort will give a good overall result with msfs2020. If not, my local Vive store has a pretty good 14 day return policy so I’m not too worried about all this. I went though all that with my previously preordered Vive XR Elite and didn’t have any problems returning it for a full refund (they even arranged and paid for return shipping via courier). Time will tell I guess.
Since the expected release date is now 16 October I don’t imagine we’ll see many reviews before that date. In the past (eg. when I preordered a Vive XR Elite) I’ve received my preorders about a week earlier, but not sure if this will be the case with my Vive Focus Vision. Stay tuned I guess, lol!
For me it definitely looks like a G2 replacement contender. I’m not so hung up on the Fresnel lens thing if the sweet spot is nice and sharp (when oversampled) and a reasonable size.
The other headset I’m seriously considering is the Bigscreen beyond. Both of these headsets have some clear advantages and disadvantages so it’s a bit of a difficult decision to make
Ya, I also considered the Bigscreen Beyond, esp. since I already have, and still use, a Vive Pro1 with AMOLED screens, Etsy GearVR lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and index controllers. I just don’t like its inflexible facial interface. Maybe if it came with a more standard, glasses-friendly interface with adjustable IPD I’d have bought one to try out. I certainly commend them on coming out with micr-oled screens and pancake lens though. Probably will the standard in 4-5 years time imho.
I agree about the inflexible facial interface plus the negative of having a fixed IPD. I’m also a glasses wearer but I find I don’t need any correction using my G2 so if I did opt for the Bigscreen I’m hoping the situation would be similar. If not I would opt for the Prescription Lens Inserts.
What I do like about the Bigscreen is the form factor, the weight (or lack of it), the OLED panels and the audio strap (although it is a pay for extra). Not so keen on being tied into SteamVR but I would live with that.
Am I right that the Vive Focus Vision supports OpenXR?
Like all current VR headsets it supports OpenXR. Vive console has its own version and you can use SteamVR’s version as well. Probably also Virtual Desktop’s VDXR version as well if that’s your cup of tea.
Just for fun, let’s try to stay on topic for a change, lol! Once I actually get my Vive Focus Vision headset and test it out I’ll let you all know what I think. Cheers.
Edit; I thought I was getting my headset this week but I got a note from Vive Support today that told me, probably closer to 18 October. Oh well, lots of time to read the manual I guess, lol!
Another review has appeared: Vive Focus Vision Hands-On: Lossless PC VR Through Fresnel Lenses
It maybe that perhaps HTC has some kind of embargo in place. Anyhow not wanting to prejudge too much but this guy doesn’t sound too enthusiastic about the glare that the lenses exhibit in high contrast scenes.
Ya, I saw that today. Upload isn’t always that great with their reviews, esp. just based on a demo, not a proper user test.
Looks like mine won’t arrive until sometime next week now (21-25 Oct).
Again, I’m not expecting miracles with those fresnel lens. However, I have had good luck with fresnel in the past as long as I correctly set the IPD, along with proper face placement. Even my Q1 and Q2 looked very good, to me anyway. Time will tell I guess. Cheers.
I did an impulse buy of the Vision Focus yesterday, to replace my Reverb G2, since the offer with a free streaming kit expired today.
I was quite happy with the Reverb, so I am not to worried about de fresnell lenses. Does anyone know what difference in quality the dual fresnell lenses of the Vision Focus will bring compared to the single fresnell lenses of the Reverb G2?
I expect it in today, will set it up tonight. Will let you know as soon as I have a first impression.
Good luck with yours mate. Please let us know how you make out. I just got an update that mine is is now getting ready to ship so hopefully I’ll get this sometime next week.
Ok, so long story very short: I returned it.
What I didn’t like:
The face mask didn’t fit perfectly, giving some false light in the unit.
A very small sweet spot. That was not a surprise given the Fresnel lenses, but still I hoped it would be larger than the Reverb’s. It wasn’t.
Steam applications worked on the PC while streaming to the unit but with a lot of stutters. Vive hub, the interface on the PC mentioned a wonky network, but I am quite sure my wifi is strong and fast.
Also, in Steam apps like Skybox and VHT, the controllers were not recognized.
The sound was not good. No bass. I read this is a common problem with Vive units, and solutions don’t always work.
A lot of glare in high contrast images, worse than in my Reverb, so that was a disappointment. That shows immediately at start up with the Vive logo on a black background. Not a good first impression.
What I did like:
The unit is quite heavy but with a good weight distribution, and quite comfortable to wear.
The passthrough image in Mixed Reality mode is much better than in the Reverb, but not crisp enough to be fully realistic.
Hand tracking works and gives an extra dimension. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in all apps. Not sure about MSFS.
Since I didn’t get the promised streaming kit, I never got to try MSFS. But given the issues mentioned above, I decided it too much of an effort to get everything working. For this money (1200 euros) I expect plug and play, and it wasn’t. Far from it. I am not afraid to do some tweaking, but this was too much.
And my Reverb is still functioning. I will keep the Windows 11 24H2 update that will turn the Reverb into a paper weight at a distance, and will keep an eye on VR headset developments in the meantime.
I have been watching Vive as well since they get the leading edge tech from Valve. My Valve Index (G2->Pi-crystal->Index) is very satisfying. I discovered this week that it scales very nicely to 200% in all my sims. Fits great, room for my glasses, everything just works out of the box if you want something that doesn’t require any tweaking. I have the kit with the two base stations on my desk and two hand controllers, but I am not sure how the price compares for an equal setup on the Vive. I recommend it.
