HUD instrument no longer displays on external view

I have set HUD instrument display to FULL for the external view in the C172 (G1000).

Sorry, I don’t know the name of this instrument. I have recently lost the large circular compass, heading bug, GPS track arrow and locator dial that usually sits at the upper left corner of the HUD in external view. The other HUD instruments are still in place and showing along the bottom of the external view screen.

I have toggled the HUD instrument display setting between OFF, MINIMAL, and FULL but the missing dial fails to reappear. I have closed and reopened MSFS and rebooted my computer multiple times, but no change.

What caused the loss of this dial? How can I get it back?

Double check your settings in options?
There are hud settings for internal view and one for external.

Yes thanks, @ccrbc . I have rechecked that the external HUD display is set to FULL.

Despite many restarts, reboots, setting toggles, the instrument that used to display every time no longer does in the C172. (I haven’t checked yet on other planes, but I will.)

What could be the cause of this? Much harder for me to fly in external view without it.

did you install anything recently? A mod or update to to a mod between when it was working and now ?

Well, recently I’ve done a couple of things.

  1. I turned on (using the MSFS toolbar at the top) Shift-Z Stats, which had previously been installed and activated in MSFS Addons Linker but not been turned on. When I first did this, I saw that the Shift-Z Stats red information bar (which is also at the top left of the screen) seemed to be somewhat on top of or underneath the top portion of the now missing compass dial. But they were both displayed at the same time. Now, there is no compass dial displaying. I will try turning off Shift-Z Stats and see if that is the issue.

  2. I’ve also been downloading and installing quite a few airlines (with included planes) using AIG Traffic Manager. I don’t think this should affect the HUD display in the C172 though.

OK, I disabled the loading of Shift-Z Stats and at first no change. But the second time I started MSFS without Shift-Z Stats the compass gauge came back to the C172 external view.

I need to verify this again before marking it as a solution.

I noticed the same thing with the Shift-Z utility. At the time, I disabled it and restarted the Sim to find the issues was resolved.

Good work thinking through the problem. Remember to mark this as solved and maybe contact the shift z creator to let them know.

Happy New Year!

I have reported to the developer of Shift-Z Stats that disabling that addon restores full HUD instrument display and fixes the toolbar carat autohide issue.

Hopefully, those issues can be addressed.
