Brief description of the issue: This is an issue that had been around since Sim Update 5 and has become an increasing issue for myself and other guys I fly with. Typically, we conduct flights in Europe in the FBW A320 and the flight time typically lasts 2-4 hours. This issue happens every single flight without fail and causes huge issues for both the pilot and ATC. FYI we have also tried to complete the flights with default aircraft and yet we still have the same issues presented. No other third party weather software is being used, just default. Further, all peripherals of our PCs are within spec and there is no obvious sing of throttling of any of the components.
THE ISSUE*
When flying along at any level, during the climb, cruise or decent, it does not matter, when the weather ‘updates’ it quite literally throws the aircraft due to a huge change in headwind/tailwind. The forecasted weather could be a strong headwind but and the sim would show that for 10 minutes but then suddenly updates the weather to a very strong tailwind, causing the aircraft to go into a stall and descend pretty rapidly; vice versa for changing from a tailwind to a headwind. You then have ATC complaining about you not being able to maintain a stable altitude.
Wait 5 minutes and the exact opposite will happen again to correct itself, causing the aircraft to either stall or overspeed.

After SU5
I was flying in Brussels control on VATSIM the other day and was hearing ATC having a metldown as all the pilots on MSFS were having massive wind changes of 152HWC to 52TWC, causing overspeed or stall, which would in turn activate the aircraft protections and have them climb or descend to get out of the stall or overspeed. It’s totally unusable when flying around Jetstreams.
I have the same issue, violent and random wind changes at any level. Vatsim ATC getting confused and irritated (as am i). side affects are naturally worse with stronger winds. wind changes aside, the live winds are very incorrect compared to spot winds from dedicated apps such as active sky for P3D. I have also checked the active sky wind against MSFS live weather and both against a real world flight plan and found MSFS way off. FSX Live weather mode was better than this.
MSFS2020 has been out 18months so needs to be sorted.
You know the truly hilarious thing about these wind shifts? They were also present in FSX. A literal 22 year old bug from an old sim is still present in MSFS 2020… it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
The weather in this game will never be right until Asobo admit they can’t hack it and let Active Sky have access to the weather API.
Agreed. The wind and temperature issues have been a joke since SU4. Luckily the +80c at FL380 temperature issues seem fixed (for now!) but if Asobo are either unable or unwilling to fix something as basic as the wind before less necessary things, then maybe its passed time to pass the baton on to a third party developer like HIFI.
So just an update for Asobo if anyone reads this. Currently over Athens at FL360 at 17z I was flying with winds of 275/80kts which is the expected wind for the waypoint I was transiting. Then at approx 17:15z everyone using MSFS on my frequency instantly had a wind change to 225/3kts putting us into a stall or overspeed. It has been stuck at exactly 225/3kts for the last 1hr 30m which is way way off the expected.
Its a joke really, considering this simulator was meant to have the best weather system yet and was praised on numerous occasions prior to release, its a real shame they cant prioritise this and push out a fix. Looking at the release notes for SU8 is just a shame considering some of the larger and simpler issues are causing huge issues in the sim right now.
From what I read SU8 was meant to be the biggest update from them for a good while so I think we can expect these issues to continue after the release of SU8
Not only are wind shifts present but the lack of cloud variety makes live weather just completely boring. It used to create beautiful cloud forms and interesting winds and gusts, now its just boring cumulus everywhere, with easy no-gust landings every time.
The weather is currently the most buggy part of the game.
You can see that in the activity in the bug areas and the Q&A questions. The weather is the most popular topic there.
That’s why it’s very strange that Asobo doesn’t deal with it.
I don’t know why, maybe they lost control and the programmers with the necessary knowledge are not available.
There is no other way to explain that they make it even worse with the SU8.
It couldn’t be more obvious, something is really wrong. https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/very-small-popcorn-clouds/498080?u=michihimself
Practically every flight I do is ruined as I experience extreme weather transitions. I shut the sim down on my last flight as on descent - about 90 miles out in my Aerosoft CRJ, the nose violently pitched up to a vertical speed of around 10000 ft/min. Earlier in the flight, while in cruise at mach .74, my airspeed suddenly dropped to under mach.06. I was barely able to recover and had to descend rapidly to pick up airspeed. During the two previous flights in the CRJ, with live weather, the nose pitched up in such an extreme manner, that I had to push my yoke forward fully to bring the nose down. It is very frustrating when everything is going well, perfect descent profile established flying a STAR, and suddenly have the aircraft becomes uncontrollable. I don’t want to fly with preset weather themes and have the same weather for a 2 hour flight. I hope MS/Asobo fixes this, because as it stands, I’m ready to remove the sim from my drive. Here is a pic of my most recent flight - on approach to the airport.
