Hype Performance Group & Developer David Amenta - Airbus H135 Helicopter

This I didn’t do. I read the comments here but it was only this afternoon. It needs to be put into a few places.

Relax Max, it was just a little spade

? I’ll get it next time.

THANKS to all the HYPE team, so much fun with the Eurocopter!

It`s a fine Helicopter, but without the physics of the Vortex Ring State its an flying object that can start and land verticaly .
A good simulated Helicopter is never stable. Thats is not an issue of the developers of the Heli, its the missing physics from MSFS.
A Heli is like an smal ball on a hemisphere with the curvature upwards. You never no in wich direction it will move.

Finally got around to giving the H135 by Hype Performance Group a try. Downloaded the latest (0.84).

Booted it up, first flight I had with it was with the simple flight model on (I didnt know it had 2 fm’s and a button to switch them). Flew it around and thought (meh).

The next day I found out about the FM button and switched it from the simple FM to the advanced FM. Muuuch better. In fact, it’s alarmingly good. It’s got some quirks, but this is definitely a keeper.

The good:

It handles the hover and slow speed flight pretty well actually

it handles extreme maneuvers surprisingly well too (it handles hammerheads better than the dreamfoil 407)

I also noticed that you can fly onto rooftops and that the rooftops have ground effect!

The modeling of torque is done quite well too, as I increase forward airspeed less and less left pedal is needed. Also at high altitudes and hot temps I need to use lots of torque/engine power to fly, which is true to life.

What might need work:

Thing about slow speed flight is that it feels a little "too’ stable to me once you get to a certain airspeed, kinda like it’s using a stability augmentation system, which it very well might be - since it’s such a modern helicopter. Interestingly, when you slow down enough it goes back to being slightly unstable. Basically theres this window of stability within the slowspeed regime that feels unnatural. Could be realistic idk.

Issue I have when flying onto rooftops is that there is a really abrupt reaction to the “new” ground effect caused by said roof. It’s like an on-off switch, once a certain amount of the aircraft is above a structure it just shoots you up like you just yanked the collective. It should be a little more gradual, increasing as more and more of the aircraft (rotor disk) is above the structure.

At around 90-100 indicated (was flying near KGCN over a flat piece of land, in the daytime), I noticed that there is some strange twitch/instability in the airframe at that airspeed (might continue past that airspeed I didnt test it beyond 100). It doesnt seem like aerodynamic buffet, it almost seems like a weird reaction to gusts or turb intended for fixed wing aircraft. Kinda feels like its just a natural byproduct of making a helicopter fly in a sim without support for helicopters. It essentially feels like the built in fixed wing oscillation in the sim, but with a shorter time interval (thus making it feel more abrupt but less “wide”). Edit: Tried it again but wasnt able to reproduce it, mustve been a one time thing.

I would also like to see some art/3d model and sound improvements. There are some areas that could use work.

I know it looks like I spent more time laying out the negatives than the positives. But the fact of the matter is, the positives outshine the negatives by far. The positives dont need a paragraph explanation, they speak for themselves. The negatives I listed out are highly situational and are VERY insignificant compared to the positives. The positives I listed are a primary part of the user experience and are more important. The aircraft flies and feels like a genuine helicopter (when in advanced mode). It nailed most of the important aspects of helicopter flight. I think from an FM standpoint it sets a decent standard for asobo to meet or exceed.

I fly helicopters in real life and I have never and never want to be in a Vortex Ring State or a loss of tail rotor effectiveness. It is your primary job to avoid those states and you can by good planing and airmanship.

I can tell you that you certainly do not need VRS to take off or land!

This helicopter is actually quite good and has all the basic primary effects of flight and they are working on the secondary effects and already have a feeling of transnational lift and a basic auto rotation can be perfo4rmed.

I don’t know who told you all this stuff but a good pilot will anticipate any horizontal or vertical movement in the hover and you can get a very stable position . With due respect almost nothing you wrote is true of a normal helicopter flight or hover profile.

There’s a soundpack on flightsim.to… just delete the files in the sound folder and add these: H135 soundpack V1.4 with new sounds, fixes and MSFS latest version ready for Microsoft Flight Simulator | MSFS

Not perfect - but much better

Youre right, but a beginner have to know about the Vortex and what he have to do, not to fail.
And he can only learn it, when the Simulation take care of this.

Dear ShinobiShadow!

Are special turns and maneuvers very important in helicopter flying, aerodynamics and physics? Is the Hype EC 135 capable of special turns and maneuvers? I attached a video of what turns I’m thinking …

A good simulator allows these turns, which is why helicopters are special. Of course from many others …

Yes, I agree that special maneuvers are important. I just watched the videos you posted. Yep, it can do them. It flies sideways, nose low, nose high, backwards and sideways just fine. It exchanges airspeed for altitude and vice versa as one could expect from a helicopter. It also executes conventional hammerheads quite well. The only thing it struggles with is any sort of inversion (regardless of airspeed or momentum). Basically it’ll do everything in the videos you posted except for the slightly inverted hammerhead at 0:25 on the last vid, it handles vertical hammerheads fine but as soon as you pass the vertical into inversion it gets weird. That being said, the fact that it can do most of this stuff is pretty impressive given the fact that the sim lacks true helicopter support.

The H135 isnt at the DCS level, but I’d say it’s getting pretty close to the the Dreamfoil Bell 407 level now as far as flight model is concerned.

If the FM feels weird to you, I’d suggest:
A: Activate the advanced FM in the helicopter (it’s a button on the EFB)
B: When you spawn, wait about a minute or so for the FM to load properly
C: Make a throttle preset with the main “Throttle” axis mapped and NOT “Throttle 1” and “Throttle 2” axis. As someone with a split throttle, I was originally using my primary preset w/ “throttle 1” and “throttle 2” axis mapped and the aircraft didn’t behave properly. It is designed to use the main “Throttle” axis and doesnt like to receive other throttle axis inputs (1, 2, 3, 4 or any combination there of).
D: Go into the MSFS settings and make sure autorudder is turned off and that modern FM is selected and not legacy

I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s getting close to the DF 407. It has vastly improved since the first version and it’s quite impressive considering the amount of work necessary to do something like this, yes.

DF 407 level…? Mmmm… Perhaps when you turn the SAS on. I still think it lacks inertia and when you turn it feels like turning in a fixed wing aircraft, which forces us to use rudder to make the nose actually move as well.

It’s a great project and it’s almost there. It’s something special for sure.

Still, it’s not enough for me to drop other the sims yet. Then, again, I will probably not drop them anyway as I use multiple sims. Still, not enough to be my main sim right now.

no matter what else anyone may think about this iteration of the H135 - I think we all agree that the work done on this project to date has far and away exceeded expectations and is astonishing.

Can the inside Yellow Tail Number, just be a smaller black and white placard? This thing is super bright at night in VR, when using the cool spotlight looking for criminals in LA.

Been using the H135 all weekend. It’s amazing. I love it.

Using an Xbox1 controller with ‘Xbox’ settings for the H135, how do I do controlled, targeted, safe landings? I cannot fathom this! Anyone have any idea?

I’ve been flying with my xbox 360 controller on advanced mode since the start. Is there anything in particular you are having trouble with? Practice is key. I like to go to a big airport and find a ground vehicle driving around and follow it. It really helps small movements become instinctive when you have an unpredictable target to focus on.

I also find it is much easier if you have the throttle mapped to an axis, I have mine set to my left stick with my rudder and cyclic on right stick. I started with the A / B buttons and that was way more difficult.

Thanks for the advice. I can’t handle Advanced Mode. Too much for me. I want the helo to be as simple as possible! I can manage take-off and flying about with some ease on the simple ‘Xbox’ setting, it’s just the landings that have got me at sixes and sevens (and almost always face planted). It’s a fantastic machine, though. An awesome new way to see this amazing world in more detail, in less of a hurry.
