I bought a Meta Quest 3 for my Dad and added prescription lenses to help him

All,

I have been looking forward to share this

A little over a year ago I shared a video showing how I built a Flight Simulator PC for my Dad; and later, a second video of how I bought a Meta Quest 2 to compliment the PC and immerse him into the virtual cockpit of MSFS2020.

The results were outstanding! Surprising, not only my Dad but also myself as neither of us had experienced Virtual Reality in such detail and depth before!

However, just recently I noticed he wasn’t using it much as it was giving him mild eye strain and discomfort from wearing his glasses under the visor. So to try and resolve this I bought a Meta Quest 3 and added some prescription lenses from VR Optician replacing the need to wear glasses under the visor.

For anyone interested this is how we got on and my overall review for the Meta Quest 3:

I’m strongly considering getting a Quest 3 to replace my aging G2, which is going to be a brick when Microsoft deprecates WMR. Thanks a lot for that. :rage:

Anyway, I got prescription lenses and blue filters from VR Optician for my G2, and it was the best ~$100 I’d spent in a while. Shame I won’t be able to use them in anything but the G2, and will have to spend another ~$100 for new lenses for whatever VR headset I choose. Oh well…

Glad you and your dad like the Quest 3.

I’ve heard you REALLY need to replace the facial insert, and get a new strap for it. Did you find that to be the case?

Hi BegottenPoet228, thank you for the reply. The VR Optician lenses combined with the pancake lenses in the Quest 3 are fantastic and have made a difference! Previously, my Dad would spend almost a minute adjusting the Quest 2 until it was centered, but I noticed he doesn’t have to do this with the Quest 3.

Regarding a replacement facial insert or strap, we haven’t tried anything different yet but I can certainly see the benefit in doing this. There are also a growing number of YouTube comments suggesting we look into this too so it’s likely we will.

Yes for sure. It’s expensive for what amounts to a bit of plastic, but the Elite Strap really is good. Much more comfy and easy to adjust.

I also have the AMVR facial replacement thing which comes with 2 options of materials (soft ā€˜cool’ fabric or faux leather). Also good, but not essential I’d say. The down side is that as the thing is deeper, you get more black noticeable at the periphery. Get used to it quick but the original gives a wider view. On the plus side you can reduce the FOV to gain pixel clarity without sacrificing any more FOV so that’s a win at least.

It’s definitely not as rough on your skin as the standard cloth which for unknown reasons has been fashioned on sandpaper!!

I also bought some passive headphone product (below) which is surprisingly good. It redirects the sound from those tiny slits and actually does sound a bit fuller. They don’t touch your ears so feel no different and they don’t need power, and are very light - and cheap!

Nowhere near the quality of actual headphones (bass mainly) but it’s far less distant a sound. I think you lose some of the 3D spatial sound but again it’s a trade off (as is everything!!).

Be careful with the Quest 3. Mine is blocked in low resolution mode. It’s a bug known for months…and there is NO solution :frowning:

ā€˜Locked’ in low-resolution mode?

Yes, when you select the battery saver mode, the Quest goes in low resolution mode but when you quit the battery saver it stays in low resolution mode. It’s locked and there are no procedures to unlock.
I think the Quest can go in battery saver mode by itself if the battery is to low. And maybe (not sure) if overheating.
It seems that the Quest can be already in low resolution mode from the start.

There are threads about that in the Internet.
I’ve contacted support and they just told that they give the information to their engineers. But there are more than 6 months than Meta knows of the problem.

I can assure you that what I see in my Quest 3 is not what is shown in the above video and I’m running a RTX4090…I’m really angry at Meta.
So I’ve just ordered a Pimax Crystal light because flying VR in low resolution and looking at the horrible tiles in msfs is becoming too much for me…

I think many people for whom the Quest 3 is the 1st VR headset do not realised that they are in low resolution…

Interesting. I must say, I understand why they lock it in low resolution mode when the battery is low. It would be nice to be able to disable that.

I know one of the selling points of the Quest 3 is its cordless capability. I’ve heard 2-3 hours of battery life. Are the batteries replaceable, or only rechargeable? It wouldn’t bother me to pause a flight, replace the batteries, and continue flying. But waiting for the headset to charge would be a pain.

The Pimax isn’t battery-powered, is it? Surely the Quest 3 doesn’t go into low-rez mode when it’s connected to a USB-C port?

Also, a 128MB Quest 3 costs under $400. A Pimax Crystal is 4X that amount. If I was looking to spend that kind of money I’d be looking at the $1000 Bigscreen Beyond, with its Micro-OLED lenses. I know the Crystal is amazing, with its unmatched FOV. But at this point, my VR purchasing options are more budget driven.

I personally am OK with connecting a Quest 3 using USB-C for flight sim use (as long as low-rez mode would never happen in that scenario.) And it’s nice to have wireless for other games that require me to move around a space.

You want to take a look at the new Crystal Light then. About $800 I think.

Thanks. I really think a ā€˜Holy Grail’ VR headset is still 3-5 years away. Every consumer grade model is a jumble of compromises right now.

The Crystal Light looks quite interesting. QLED is pretty good, and I like that it uses DP.
Inside-out tracking, Aspheric lenses, local dimming, FFR, and 120Hz maz refresh (not that I’d be able to hit that target with my current system) look like nice features as well.

EDIT: I’ll be getting paid in another 6 weeks for a couple of programming jobs I just finished. I’ll have enough to resign my G2 to the trash heap. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I should sell it on eBay now, but my high moral standard is in the way. I’d hate for some unsuspecting buyer to end up with a headset he/she can’t use for long. Some folks would think ā€˜Caveat Emptor’ but that’s not who I am. Maybe I’ll just list it with a $100 reserve so I can feel better when someone wins it for $101.

Yes it looks good. Wider FOV too, and can go as low as 60Hz which could be ideal for keeping consistent frame rate but still smooth enough for aerobatics / racing / low level jet flying.

I don’t know if just connecting the Quest 3 via usb cable is enough to avoid te lock. Mine was always connected and I have found it twice empty when I switched it on.
On the other side, my Quest is in low resolution since the beginning. In fact, I have never had good resolution. It took me time to realise that what I see is not what it should be…

You can take a gamble with the Quest 3. If I was aware of the bug, I wouldn’t have bought one. And I’ll never buy another Meta product.

All, thank you so much for the replies to the topic.

The locking in on low resolution mode sounds terrible, but isn’t something we have experienced. We use a cable when playing MSFS2020 as gives a better (more stable) connection to the sim.

@ButeoButeo2369 I’m genuinely sorry to read the issues you’re having with your device. You mention ā€œmy Quest is in low resolution since the beginning. In fact, I have never had good resolution. It took me time to realise that what I see is not what it should beā€¦ā€ depending on where you are in the world and how long you have had it, contact the retailer, let them know it has a fault and ask for a replacement. If you are in the UK then this might be helpful (clickable link)

@Baracus250 Thanks for the facial insert & sound suggestions, it’s appreciated :slightly_smiling_face:!
