I do not understand the controls settings panel at all

I do not understand the Settings/Controls panel at all. I have a T.16000M joystick. Here is what I see under Devices List:

First, I’d like to clear out all settings for any bindings to the joystick. I’ve read where all you have to do is click “Clear” from the pop-up menu when you click on the gear icon. “Clear” is disabled when I click the gear icon next to button for General Controls”, “Airplanes Controls” or “Specific Cessna…”. What do these sections mean anyway? What does clicking on the “<“ or “>” icon do?

If I select a category of controls (e.g. “Radio”) and press the “Filters : Assigned” button, I see this:

Looks like joystick button 1 has been assigned to 5 different functions. And this is the default ?!?!. How do I clear the assignment? What does the “1” and “2” next to the “POV” icons mean?

This interface is terrible.

The < & > will cycle backwards or forwards through your profiles for that category (General, Airplanes, Specific) for that peripheral.

I’d create a new profile within a category and clear that if you want to start from scratch.

You can clear the assignment, by hovering over the field that shows the assigned buttons/axis and press the Backspace key on your keyboard. Alternately, you can click the small gear button on the far right of the line and there will be a trash can icon there that will delete the assignment.

The 1 & 2 are indications that that button has multiple assignments. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a button will/can have different functions depending on the mode you’re in. So, for example, interior vs. exterior camera controls, etc.

I agree it’s confusing, but once you understand Asobo’s intent, it starts to make sense.

To clear the bindings, you would want to duplicate the default “Transversal” or the “None”, and give it your own name, then “Clear”. But you’d need to do that for both the General and Airplanes sections… this is the confusing part, and I hope this can help explain it:

Each “DEVICE” (in the Upper Left) has “PRESET” bindings assigned (Lower Left) - it seems confusing because Asobo split the PRESET in to 3 separate sections or categories for the same Device:

  • General - related to the simulator functions, camera views, etc
  • Airplanes - control surfaces, engines, throttles, etc
  • Specific - for when a plane has unique controls, or you want to assign per plane

For your T.16000M, you’ll notice it has a default T.16000M 2024 Transversal preset, with a lock icon for the General section. Nobody knows what Transversal means (likely “General”), but it identifies the Default Preset. The lock just means it’s a Default and can’t be edited, but it can be duplicated and then you can edit your copy of it.

And if you were to click the Left or Right arrow under Airplanes controls as Nixon suggested above, there will likely be a default locked “T.16000M 2024 Planes” for it as well. Together the General and Airplanes Presets would represent the default bindings that come shipped. You can duplicate those, and then edit or clear your copies of the 2 Presets.

Start by clicking the gear next to both the General and Airplanes preset, and duplicating the existing Default Presets for both. Be sure to have a naming strategy that keeps your General and Airplanes preset names unique from each other, for example:

  • My T.16000M General
  • My T.16000M Airplanes

Then you can start editing what buttons are assigned to what function, and/or clear all the bindings in your copy of the preset. Once done, you can click the gear again and “Apply to all airplanes” if you want to.

At the moment with a new PC I only have a keyboard, mouse, and controller set up (while waiting to order throttle, yoke, pedals, etc). I only make a few changes to the Default Presets, but with 3 Devices, it means I have created 6 Presets:

  • My Keyboard General
  • My Keybaord Airplanes
  • My Mouse General
  • My Mouse Airplanes
  • My Controller General
  • My Controller Airplanes

Finally if and when you get profiles and bindings working, I strongly suggest a few things:

  • keep notes on each thing you change specifically, for when you have to set it up again - the nature of MSFS is that sometimes the controller settings get messed up and you have to reset
  • You can click the little gear and export the Presets and keep them outside the sim, so if you ever reinstall, you should be able to import them and not start from scratch. Again, for each Device, there are 2 or 3 presets: General, Airplanes, and if used, Specific.
  • It’s possible that as MSFS 2024 evolves, the way bindings are handled may also evolve, so if you are going export and save presets, do it regularly, so your exported preset stays up to date.

Hope that helps.

You provided excellent, detailed help. All I can say is…Thank goodness I use SPAD and don’t have to deal with the chaotic confusion that is “Asobo’s Intent.”

It’s absolutely mind-blowing that they took a really poor Controls UI in FS2020 and made it even more confusing in FS2024. Is it more granular? Sure. But at what cost?

What is SPAD?

Just to say thanks for this. :+1:

You can google for SPAD Next - it’s software that you can use to configure peripherals outside of MSFS, that then talks to MSFS. But I would recommend learning the native MSFS controller system first, since adding additional software can also add complication when things aren’t working.

In my opinion, there’s way too many settings…

I don’t think there are too many - since they are all functions a user or developer might want or need to access. But the interface, naming, assignment, and explanation of the interface, needs work.

At the moment (MSFS 2024 SU3 Beta v1.5.24.0) there are 2,094 items listed.

The Keyboard 2024 Transversal Preset has 333 items mapped to key bindings by default.

Some are duplicates because of context - moving the view in the cockpit, external, drone, etc.

I’m in the middle of trying to understand how they have designed this, and there are several real issues I’ve found:

  • the naming of the items is not consistent, which makes searching difficult. Why is it called “Showcase” in the Toolbar but “Drone” in the controls? How would a new user know they are the same?
  • They need to add a “Context” field to the search results. When browsing the list, you can see categories (or Context) such as External Camera, Cockpit Camera, but when searching, the search results don’t show the context.
  • There are so many camera view modes now: Cockpit, Instrument, External, Character, Character 3-rd Person, Showcase/Drone, Photo… moving around, and moving between these view modes should be a little more consistent, and then moving your view around in each mode should also be consistent (in my opinion).
  • There is the Assigned list, which are the defaults, but then there is an “Essentials” list which I expected to be a subset of the default Assigned to help new users. But it’s not, instead it has many unassigned items. Which begs the question - if they are “Essential”, why are they not Assigned? Again, Asobo not explaining their logic.

Thx for all the information. It would be great if all those settings could be saved. Each time I run msfs 2024 it turns back to a default setting. And it’s slow, slow, slow to change it back to the settings you need for a certain airplane…

I have read so many posts about this interface that it is one of the things keeping me away from FS2024.

I doubt they did much design for it. Maybe they had more important things to do. Anyway I think this is it because if they change the design most bindings get lost.

But then, bindings get lost anyway already, reverting back to default.

Sigh….

There are ID numbers behind the input names - as would be necessary for multi-language localization. Although I can’t find a single list of bindings among the installed MSFS files on disk (the list you see appears to be amalgamated from various sources when viewed or searched) I did find a file called MSFS_EventsEnum.h which seems to show ID numbers behind many of the input names.

But to your point, the naming convention seems to be whatever mood the programmer is in that day without any enforced convention - which is how things do get lost. So what we see is more like a bottom drawer of lost and found commands than a well organized tool box

Click the wheel beside the Preset:
Export to disc
Import from disc

Once you set up a profile for an aircraft click Save and Back. That’s all you need to do. It should load the profile automatically when you select that aircraft from now on. For example when I hop in the Black Square Piston Duke it loads that. When I hop in the COWS DA40-XLS it loads that. When I hop in the A2A Aerostar it loads that. When I get my next aircraft I will set up a profile and once done click Save and Back. Like the others it will load automatically when I select that aircraft going forward. I don’t have to go into the controls to select it.

I have many flight sim peripherals and it remembers everything. For example when I fly the COWS DA40-XLS I use my joystick. When I fly the A2A Aerostar I use my yoke. I don’t have to tell it what I am using.

Thx for this detailed information. I know the drill. I have the FlyingIron Spitfire with a profile named VintagePM for every peripheral (two joysticks, throttle, keyboard). When restarting the Sim and selecting the Spit i do have to reselect the VintagePM profile because it change every time to a standard profile. And it takes a looooooooooong time to do that….

This has been fixed in the SU3 Beta. Selecting profiles manually is instant.

thx for the info Maki152, looking forward ! :oncoming_fist:
