I finally bought a PC to play Flight Simulator on!

I finally decided to take the gamble and buy a PC. Opted for an i9 11900k and RTX 3080. I’d be curious to know what people think (please don’t talk about inflated prices, I don’t want to hear it lol)

I also took a gamble with ABS. I thought as it’s Newegg’s own brand there would at least be people to talk to. Thankfully so far everything has worked out okay. I believe the components are all pretty decent (Corsair PSU, Case, Cooling etc)

Do you think I’d be able to overclock this thing? I’m running on a 4k monitor on Ultra and outside of heavily populated areas I can get a reasonably consistent 60fps but that drops to the 40s in built up areas and low 30s in heavily built up (Manhattan etc). Still drops below 30 and down to mid/low 20s on the ground in big airports - no idea why that is…

Pretty keen on feedback. Like I said I think I actually got a decent PC with decent branded components but I’m not an expert…

Those frame rates are exactly where they should be for now. Nothing really left to do but enjoy.
Congratulations!

Thanks! Still loving it. The beauty of this sim is can make you appreciate the small stuff without having to hunt for big cities and even the airliners/jets. I live in Sarasota and just being able to do circuits and VFR flying in a 152 or 172 makes it worth it.

Congratulations! Have fun… nice rig!

Nice, a buddy of mine bought their RTX 3060 version as an upgrade for a GTX 1070 and likes it.

Welcome to MSFS

Feel free to add me and anyone else who cares to share their MSFS tag.

Pretty sure that rig rocks the specs that most here would recommend for msfs2020 and the performance you are seeing is right on the money.

Really nice spec. You will have fun with that!

FPS you’re getting are about the best MSFS will currently put out. Don’t think OC would help much if at all. Some folks are big fans of overclocking; I’m not. In my experience, often more trouble than its worth. Just my opinion of course

I recently did the same and got an I9 10900K with a 3080. It was a great decision. MSFS is so much better than what I was using before. I can now fly in 4K Ultra settings and still get around 30 FPS in most cases including Heathrow and London, New York etc, without overclocking. Occasionally it will drop to mid 20’s for a second, but most of the time, it’s above 30 FPS. In places like New Zealand, I often get around 50+ FPS in 4K Ultra settings. The only thing I modify is the Render distance to 90. On occasion I turn off Bloom as well, but that’s because I don’t particular like Bloom, not because I have to. It improves FPS a bit when turned off so it suits me, but it’s great to get buttery smooth visuals in 4K. I have the MSI Suprim 3080 and couldn’t be happier so far. BTW. The FPS I quoted is pretty conservative. I often get better depending on where I’m flying. The low frame rates I quoted are usually at take off or landing at huge busy airports. Anywhere else, it’s more likely above 50+ frames a second in the air and slightly drops at landing or taking off.

Thanks all. Yeah I got it last week and I’ve been playing with Vsync locked at 30 and it’s been pretty awesome but then I tried the locked at 60 and you get slightly more stutters, but it can also be buttery smooth at the same time. I kinda don’t want to go back, my heart is saying 60 and my head is saying 30. I am also utterly confused by G-Sync, like is that something people are using or not? And how do you enable it? And then do you disable V-sync in game?

I played with OC a little bit but I’m too much of an amateur. I did something that meant my FS went down to like 12 FPS so I uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia driver, set everything to default and now I’m not really touching it. There are just way too many variables in overclocking for me to think about

I’m jealous

Of course many of us are going to have our opinions. But first, congrats!

I’m running an i9-11 OC’d to 5.4 on 2 cores and 5.2 remaining. There are definitely gains to be made. It just depends on the Mobo and cooling. I have a Aorus Master z590 with an EK AIO 360, so I have plenty of room.

I’m running 32GB of Crucial Ballistix at CL 14 3600. 3600 with a lower CL helps, but anything over 3600 pushes you to gear 2, which will slow you down unless you go extreme on the RAM. My advice through testing and others. 3600, 32GB, CL14-16. I can show you some charts that go through gear 1 v 2.

On the GPU side of the house, I’m running a 3090 Kingpin. Definitely OC your card. It will help.

Of course, I have more opinions and comments, but these are the major ones. cheers.

Eh, you tried at least…
There really isn’t much point in OCing modern hardware considering you have a CPU turbo of 5.3 GHz paired with what is already one of the quickest GPUs on the market today running at 1845 MHz (Reference Card: 1710 MHz)

Just make sure your RAM is running at advertised speeds and enjoy your new PC.
(enable a XMP Profile if speeds are below advertised, try another if its unstable)

I normally OC and benchmark the hell out of my PCs to find the best gains and reliability… but I don’t even bother anymore after upgrading, especially with all the new tech that increases FPS.

I think someone else pointed out the in sim settings. Definitely take a look at some videos for in sim setting as they can make a big difference.

G-sync is enabled from the Nvidia app settings. You have to have a monitor or TV capable of g-sync. So make sure that side of things has g-sync enabled. In most cases if I am using g-sync then I disable V-sync.

Yeah I’ve enabled them in Nvidia. I have a freesync monitor but understand even thought it’s not officially G-sync supported, it ‘works’. So the option has appeared as I have a displayport cable, but when I turn off V-sync in Flight Simulator the screen tears really bad…

Isn’t this all dependent on the actual motherboard version? Like it says ‘5 minute’ OC but for a beginner it’s more like 5 hours. If he had a guide for my actual motherboard version then that would be different

How would I make sure my RAM is running at the right speeds? Pretty sure mine is 3200 and it said in the easytune bios it was running at 2666mhz. I’ve decided to ditch easytune and use the actual bios at startup because I invested in a physical (non-bluetooth) USB keyboard so it would work!
