I find it very surprising what people want from a flight simulator

I am 99.9% GA myself. I can’t understand why airliners are attractive. Take off, fly so high you can’t see details, land. I get the procedure is interesting, and I learned airliners to learn that procedure to a point… But beyond that… I don’t get it  Even most of that procedure is all automated.

I’ve also flown an airliner and believe I understand some of the appeal, I definitely got the feeling of excitement flying a big plane out of London Heathrow and also enjoyed a busy return flight into said airport at night with lots of other planes and full ATC chatter. However - for me - it was more of an experience as opposed to GA which I find much more of an activity.

I find hand flying GA with live weather an externally created flight plan, calculated track and timed legs using the lovely visual scenery to track your progress very involved and rewarding. We’re basically very spoilt . I just hope the franchise continues as the bar has been set very very high for any new entrants to the discipline.

This is a great way to put it.

I fly mostly GA and of those mostly the golden age of aviation type aircraft. The CAS J-3 cub, GAS Stearman, the Tiger moth, HU 16 Albatross, Cessna 170, 195 and the sort. Of course the Cessna 310, A2A Comanche and Aerostar when I want a little faster ground speed.
No desire to fly the larger airliners… probably because I am just shy of being a million miler on two different Airlines as a passenger because of my previous career so no desire to relive those experiences

I think it’s great anyone can fly the aircraft they like, regardless. That’s what a platform should be.

I just wish the platform allowed all the things that support flights to work better together.

Example, my current frustration is ATC addons can’t access the sim’s METAR for your flight, and so they try to find METAR info from other sources, which often conflict with the data in the sim, resulting in runway conflicts. It’s one of many examples. I’m sure there are reasons (licensing of weather data, I assume? But it means Microsoft didn’t plan for inclusion of addons to be able to process METARs for your flight, and didn’t negotiate that use case from the provider…)

As a platform, I want Microsoft and Asobo to ensure that addons like ground services, or fuel, cargo, and passenger loading, parking and unloading, or ATC addons, can just work with your aircraft, your flight plan, your weather, etc. Flights really come alive when all the supporting services can work together and be on the same page.

I originally answered that I wanted Microsoft to finish / fix their own first party services, however, I think 3rd party developers would do a better job IF the platform allows full and standardized integration of these kinds of things in a more common sense way.

In short, I want Microsoft and Asobo to focus more on the platform and base sim (instead of adding more unfinished planes and unfinished services that seem to compete with developers), with a standardized way for innovative addons to really work better together, to have access to all the relevant data to create a more cohesive experience that brings the sim to life for the user.

I have been flying with flight simulations for a very long time, but it is only since FS2020 that I have been flying GA VFR a lot, as the landscape really allows it. You can really navigate by landscape features (roads, railway lines, church towers, towns) and it is very nice to admire the landscape as it really looks. The fact that the aircraft, GA and airliners, are programmed to be increasingly complex and realistic is excellent, as it allows you to develop an understanding of complex aircraft systems. I love the new flight simulator from Microsoft. However, I limit myself to a few aircraft that I can master better.

I am a bit like this too, not sure why as it’s all available but I tend to stick with what I know.

Laughing. Immediately it reminded me of my experience with Airbus compared to Boeing planes. I learned to fly the heavies on the A320 by FBW cause it was an excellent plane and it was free so now I’m right at home in pretty much any Airbus (I now own the Fenix products). I decided I needed the challenge of learning to fly Boeings as well and boy I should have stuck with what I know. Watched a few videos of starting up a 737 and tried to emulate what I saw in the sim and had massive trouble until I figured out that the majority of switches in the 737, to turn them on, you push down instead of up. What the heck? Boeing is an American company and in the US switches are all pushed up to turn things on. Then the blasted throttles with no detents and some stupid TOGA switch that I couldn’t seem to get to work. Programming the MCDU was absolutely counter-intuitive compared to the Airbus. Eventually I took off but then had no clue how to land the thing. Gave up. Yet people swear by the 737’s on the forum. All the more power to them.

lol … I had the reverse, I flew 20 years in 737s on FS2000 through FSX - I used to fly them for British Airways Virtual on VATSIM . Once we had details of MSFS 2020 I flew a few Airbus flights to get ready and panicked with the differences. Now, after four years of the AIrbus, I cannot go back. I tried to, but my brain just rejects the smaller older Boings.

I flew the 787 a few times, and that seems OK — although the A380 seems more responsive and more nimble. The Airbus aircraft seem like cars compared to the Boeings feeling like Ford D1010s

I agree that’s better to master a few at one time

Of course, I love trying out all kinds of things in the simulator, if only to broaden my horizons. It’s always interesting to see what else is out there. It’s also fun to fly an F-18 over a big city at Mach 2. But when it comes to real flying, I stick to a few aircraft that I know well.

I agree with the OP. (I sim only in VR.) I’ve tried several flights in the big airliners, but I prefer driving a sportscar over a bus anyday. Free Flight allows just so many wonderful GA craft, even though I seem to always revert back to the Dakota.

This Sim caused me to sign up for a “Discovery Flight” at the local airport, and I was just amazed at the realism built into the Sim. Detail from the ground below to the scratches on the dash to the flight physics.

It also saved me tens of thousands of $$$, realizing that getting my PPL in real life is just not worth it. I can’t spend that much money just to rent a plane and circle the local terrain. But I don’t have to! I have MSFS 2024, which is real enough for me.

I purchased MSFS 2024 because I’ve always loved helicopter sims. In the year or so I’ve been playing, I haven’t gotten around to helos yet, because I got hooked on the GA craft. I’m still looking forward to getting into those helos someday!

I flew up the eastern Mexican coast, up the US eastern seaboard to Hudson Bay, then west to Juneau and up to Anchorage in Free Flight, often using many different planes. I just started each flight from the last landed at. Beautiful scenery, yet I never missed a hot cup of coffee or a bathroom break.

I enjoy using real life VFR Sectional Charts, VOR frequencies in autopilot HDG mode (not that I had to), and shooting ILS when available for runways is always fun (and generally quite realistic).

This is a great topic, with some great replies, every one of them.

I do understand why people find airliners interesting and I also understand why people like flying C152 and everything between, including choppers. I have been through the the whole spectrum and currently, I’m flying Kodiak 100 in PNG. To me, it is all interesting to a varying degree and the more challenging it is, more I enjoy it. My favorite airliner is the FBW A380. Business jet Citation X. Bush plane is definitely Kodiak 100 and trainer has to be Cessna 172. However, there are a number of planes in all categories that I find very interesting and fun to fly. I wish I had been lucky enough in my younger years to get the opportunity to learn to fly for real but, I still enjoy the sim now that I have nothing else to do. Happy flying and broaden your horizon by trying all that is on offer.

I’m in the middle. I don’t like airliners but I also don’t like little GA aircraft. Business jets are where my interest lies. We have a few good ones, but they’re really the most ignored category.
