I love Reno Air Racing!

@DDM0815 You have many valid observations and I think most agree with your observations to varying degrees. The solutions are not intended to exclude anybody, quite the contrary. I believe I mentioned in my main topic posting that the flight sim genre can be attractive to players that tend to be a bit shy, or solitary. We all like to play alone from time to time.

HarryHowzer is spot on about all the benefits of the private lobby system. There appears to be a belief that all the active players are spending all their time exclusively behind the private lobby wall, I assure you this is absolutely not the case. Almost all that I fly with start our daily racing journey in the public lobbies and find each other there often. Dropping in on your buddy and stealing lots of points from them is quite enjoyable :japanese_ogre: and quite common. I promise we are not all hiding in private, but collision off private lobbies are a blast too.

:handshake: If there is one thing I’m sure we can all agree on it is that most are not having much success with the current matchmaking system. :handshake:

It is pointless trying to explain our situation to someone who has had the opportunity, had the invitations, but chooses to stick to his opinions rather than try an alternative.

I don’t have the energy to argue with someone who is convinced by their own opinion rather than the experience of others

Well over 4000 showed an interest in Reno races and have used the activity and have scores reflected on the leader boards. While it definitely isn’t a huge community by general online gaming standards, it is still a substantial amount. At this point I estimate that less than 100 are active or even just dabble in it

While I agree that the matchmaking scoring and rankings are a huge problem, we have done all we can to post bugs and exploits and have left them to the Flight Sim team to fix. But the issues we are dealing with is player interest and activity while we wait for these to be fixed. We know this will not happen soon. We are promoting racing in the interim WITH WHAT WE HAVE, not what we wish for

You however seem fixated on a wishlist that you will not see realised for a long time, and that doesn’t help in the short term. It is just rehashing the issues we were discussing months ago

You assume that I think what we offer is the ONLY way, but we don’t think like that. If you have better options while we wait for fixes, then let’s hear them.

And no, we don’t lock ourselves “behind closed doors” as you put it, we are open to ALL players interested, You have been invited to join us for races, but you chose to reject that offer. The offer still stands, but it seems clear that you have locked yourself out by your own choice,

The fact is our members invite every random player we fly against in the open lobbies, put out invites on SeedyL’s races on twitch on mondays, offer the same to the 4000 odd members in Got Gravel’s discord channel and post invites in the forums.

Our door is open, and our (not so) private lobbies free for anyone interested to use. As we don’t have lists of active players in the game where we can see who is looking for races, we use the next best thing as a gathering point, which is discord

As I have already mentioned, if you have any better ideas while we wait for the fixes, I will be glad to hear them

Another image to illustrate my point about a few things.

  1. This is a friend from discord that I race against often. We found each other in the public lobby last evening and had a great battle. We race public more often than not.
  2. What is going on with that points system? It was a perfect tie of race time and I stole 6 points from him. I understand the math to some degree, I qualified first and he started with more points that me but “dayum”. Minus 6 points is a bit brutal.
  3. It’s fun to trade points between friends , I can see how this could be discouraging to new players though. :rage:

I never said i have better ideas for the current situation or that you (and all the others of the Discord) are doing a bad job. In fact, i absolutely agree that you are doing as good as you can with the options you have. No question about that.

Please read my postings correctly and not with an attitude that i’m against you, which is absolutely not the case. I don’t say you or the rest of Discords locks anyone out. I said Private Lobbies lock others out. And that is a huge difference. I even invited someone myself and wrote in the forum or official Discord (can’t remember) to contact me so i can share the Discord invite link as i wasn’t allowed to post it.

This thread was started with the intention, to make Reno better and i just stated, that the private lobbies are not a good solution for a community that small as not everybody knows and will know about the Discord even in the future. And others also don’t want to join for their own reasons. But they still want to race and that’s why the options ingame have to improve.
And yes, even 4000 is not a big number, especially with the fact that you have different time zones, people don’t have 24/7 time for Reno
 which shrinks the playerbase.

Therefore everyone has to see ingame, who is racing and how many. Private lobbies are working against that, as you don’t see them. But open lobbies or also called “custom games” in other games provide this. You can still invite friends like now in the private lobbies, and in addition to that, others that you don’t know by now, can also join.

→ Conclusion (again): Don’t remove, but change Private Lobbies to Custom Races, which are also manually created. You still have the benefits of the Private Lobbies but on top, everyone can see and join them directly ingame without needing anything else.

@ChilliGrible:
I guess you might have heard of World of Warcraft but i’m not sure if you have played it.
The Ranking system in the PvP-Arena Games is bascially the same. You start at a certain amount (if i remember correctly it is 1500 Points) and win or lose points depending on the outcome of the fight.
And if you win against someone with way more points (so a more unexpected win), you gain more points, and the other one loses more points. If your points are closer to each other at the start, you also win/lose less points.
This system is a bit more competitive where as just gaining points is more casual friendly.
The first one shows more, who is better, the second one who puts more time into it.
It’s of course not that black and white, as you usually also have to put a certain amount of time into it with the first one, but it also needs skill. The second one is just time (100x1 point is still 100 points even if you need 1000 races for it or so)
So it is basically a philosophy thing.

Recently considered Reno but is there any single player utility to it?

I bought Reno on launch. Played a handful of times and haven’t been on since. To be honest. It’s not what I bought flight sim for. But I think it’s great that there is something for everyone in this sim. Casual or veteran it really doesn’t matter. Quite rightly if people spend their money, it needs to be right. I hope your well written post gets the attention and action it deserves :+1:

The Time Trials are fun if you like precision flying in a single player mode and the included aircraft are also a good deal. :airplane: :small_airplane: :small_airplane: :small_airplane: :money_with_wings:

Hopefully some minor tweaks to the current game and leaderboards will make the single player modes more fun for new racers. :crossed_fingers:

I wish I had the skill to phrase my post like this. Brilliant in the way you said “not for me”

You have some really good points even though I do disagree with some. Reasonable people can disagree. It would be far more help if you would join us on Discord to talk about it. We have a group that throws out ideas all the time and your input could be extremely valuable

You might even find flying with us can be quite enjoyable!

Hey folks, nice to have this thread here and great thanks to chili for the overall saying post :+1::v:

Just to leave a little comment and may feedback of an European fellow

Seems the weekly streams from seedyL are advertising and keeping Reno alive well, so with this in mind his streams are unfortunately not really fitting into CET times on Monday
I don’t know how deep he is involved into publishment of Ms
may there’s a way to swap the Reno race streams to a Fridays or Saturday spot to reach out to higher amount of viewers.

Guess as many guys mentioned before, an update to fix the bugs that are still around in Reno would also give the Modus a little bit of a revival

Hope things will turn better and to see as many pilots as possible having fun on racing :checkered_flag::small_airplane::checkered_flag:

Best greetz

@STEU3R Great to see you still racing!
We are all awaiting the return of the seeedyL Reno streams, I believe they are on vacation and will hopefully resume in a couple weeks. :surfing_man: :beach_umbrella:. For anyone interested in group racing you should check out his past Reno streams, they clearly illustrate how much fun racing with friends can be.

@DDM0815 I actually used to play WoW in a raiding guild, totally different than PvP for sure but I remember the points system being quite competitive indeed, it pays to win. I stated in my original post that a change to the points system could be complex and would require further discussion, your comparison is defiantly valid. I was approaching it from a more casual and inclusive philosophy, it would remain to be seen which type would increase engagement. I have to feel the folks at X-Box have a bit of experience on the subject :grinning:

Just a brief counterpoint here. We are not elitist. We are inviting everyone to come join our Discord channel: FS2020 Reno Racing International
Once on voice coms (at the Bar) feel free to discuss any racing options you want, from private lobby, to public racing, to anything you can think of. We are a pretty accommodating and creative lot.

By the way, many good points in your post, and I did not intend this to be adversarial, but more of an alternate viewpoint.

Time Trials are you against the clock, and yourself.

Can I try the Reno Racing before I buy? if so how?

Unfortunately, I do not believe they offer a trial period for the expansion. If you search YouTube for MSFS Reno there are many examples of solo and group activities. This is what I do for any game I am considering purchasing. :money_with_wings:

It is reasonable to hope for one bug fix or update at every major sim update. After the Active Pause exploit is resolved I believe the matchmaking system shall be the next priority. If anyone has any examples of current games (racing or otherwise) that could be used as a good example it might be helpful. Something in the Microsoft XBOX ecosystem may have a higher chance of adaptation.

Greetings from Spain!! First of all I apologize for my English. I wish I could find more people to run in multiplayer, but almost every time I connect there is no one available. My name in the simulator is RuyMarVA and I would be happy if you add me as a friend or for private games. Thank you very much to all!!
