I don’t think it matters where you purchased it from but you are right in many cases you have to be in the same aircraft for it to be shown correctly. Even the default Cabri and Bell helis suffer with this and everyone has them unless they deleted them.
iracing, the most cash grabby of pc sims, has figured out a way to display cars you are racing against that you do not personally own. Frankly, it’s dumb that msfs hasn’t done this. it sorta ruins multiplayer with friends. The updates are already so bloated, what’s another couple hundred mb to display an accurate airframe.
After comparing my settings with someone else’s who could see an aircraft correctly when I could not. I discovered a setting that was different. Sure enough it fixed the issue but not immediately. I had to fly away from the aircraft in question so it unloaded. Once I got close again I saw the correct model. The setting is in the traffic tab and is the second to last setting. Something like “show when in close proximity”. It needs to be set to off. Interesting to see if this also fixes it for others with this issue.
If BlackAI can dynamic place build on the bingmap. Maybe there is a way to load in the shell of modelles and audio to, lets say the 50 nearest planes, from a its servers where the model maker can submit their shells?
FSLTL do a good job with that already, and it will only improve over time. If Asobo did something similar that could work too. But the issue the OP had was that he wanted the aircraft that he had just purchased to be visible to his friends during MP.
Obviously FSLTL doesn’t work on Xbox, and it seems the dataset that Asobo are using from Flightaware is just schedules rather than real time from someone like FlightRadar24 (as used in FSLTL)
In addition, there is a significant portion of players who report frame rate hits from AI, whether in be cars, ships or aircraft. In order for the OP’s friends to see his aircraft they’d need some sort of low poly AI version installed, and the next thing would be repaints. All of this would in theory be possible on PC, but would take a lot more effort on the console and theres no way MS will let Asobo do something that won’t work cross platform.
There has been discussion on this subject multiple times in the Dev Q&A’s.
There are multiple facets to this problem.
-
for Model Matching with the real thing, there has to be matching icao manufacturer, model and type designator information in the aircraft.cfg. So far, in all the planes I’ve checked, maybe 10% have the correct data. Seems developers don’t know how to check the ICAO web page for the correct data. They just put whatever they feel like. ICAO Aircraft Type Designators
-
After that, icao_airline should match to get the correct livery on the plane. Again, see above. These values are filled in properly even less often.
-
Jorg has said multiple times he really, really wants this to work. He’s been working to get licenses for liveries across the board, but has only gotten responses from a few airlines (KLM, Air New Zealand, maybe a few others). He’s also tried to work with AIG, to get models and stuff, but I’m not sure what the status of that activity is.

There are too many options for users to choose, from “Use generic models (or not)”, Live Traffic, AI traffic, and others, and it is just too hard to figure out how best to set up the sim as none of those options are explained really well. It’s just too hard to figure out.
IOW, model matching actually does work for live traffic, and should work in multiplayer, it’s just that the data on most aircraft is so wrong, it can’t. And sadly, if users go through and fix the icao data, then that breaks things across the sim for model matching in multiplayer. It would be awesome if the induction process for planes force correct icao data (easy enough to automate that check). Why is it so hard for developers to get this data correct, though???
Then again, it does seem like the “generic” aircraft need some updating. There’s no reason all of the default aircraft shouldn’t have generic versions. Like the F-18.
This is from the SDK:
Please vote for this topic to increase the visibility to the devs. Hopefully we can get it higher in the list:
I didn’t actually know this was SDK documented so I’ve learnt something. It seems simpler solutions like this are often overlooked. I had the same thought about the hangar sorting. Similar issue some devs generally put their own name as the manufacturer so you end up with the same aircraft not next to one another in the display order. Just simply needs a conformity check but that would somehow have to be in the sim to stop non MP packages non conforming. Again quite easy to implement.
Perhaps to help the model matching they should relax the need to use proper ICAO data and just match on the aircraft name field. They would certainly get more matches and can then just concentrate on resolving the specifics of those that are reported as problematic.
Even if they retain the ICAO matching how long would it really take for someone to collate a list and fix those that are wrong and communicate with the devs to tell them to update their packages for any future updates.
Seems like the answer here is to have spec plane fly-ins where everyone agrees to fly the same exact model.
It would be nice if we could see each others planes in a generic livery of at least the same model.
Or folks could agree to switch to a particular livery for that flight.
We all enjoy flying particular planes. Why not enjoy them together?
Not very flexible and you’ll always get those that ignore the instructions.
It’s a working plan that can work until Microsobo provides a real solution.
Whether people actually use the idea…
The extenal models for each aircraft could be on the MS servers and streamed to users as required in the same way other data is. Using LODs would minimise the bandwith requirements.
Seems an obvious solution for anything which is available on the marketplace at least. Bit more awkward for content which isn’t.
Indeed frustrating since both IVAO and VATSIM have this issue solved by model libraries with livery choice.
But there you have to worry about ATC busting your chops for flying in “controlled airspace” without permission..
IVAO even has “my plane of choice” the canard pusher LongEZ
I think part of the reason sometimes developers don’t use the manufacturer’s name at least in marketing the products, and it may follow so far as their names in the hangar, is licensing issues.
Note that even MS names Cessnas after their current owner Textron, when, in common vernacular, Cessna is as common a name as Kleenex.
I’m pretty sure this is what happened to the Flysimware C414, and why they had to change filepath names which screwed things up for a while was they tried to use Cessna and got rebuffed. That’s just a guess though, I didn’t follow the situation closely. Certainly an issue with the Milviz 80R.
I fix the hangar problem with liveries, and make the livery first so I don’t have to mess with the in OneStore.
The answer here lies in
- Going through all the aircraft.cfg’s and naming things per the SDK and the ICAO naming conventions.
- Going through all the generic planes and making sure all their icao variables are up to snuff (I haven’t gotten that far yet. They may be, I don’t know.).
- Making sure MSFS’s model matching rules are up to snuff and matching models increased in a larger variety of types. They have to add the F-18, and a P-51 for warbirds would be nice, and other planes added… Amphibious versions, etc..
- I’d really like to see at least the Baron’s lower LOD paints modified so they aren’t all messed up when being used as generic planes. I think other planes have the same issue.
These steps could be done now.
After that, it’s up to MS to formulate a plan for developers to supply Low poly models of their planes when sold on the Marketplace so they can be shared by streaming when required, and Asobo to implement the technical details required. This is not necessarily simple. But, as noted, is doable. In fact, I think this is the gist of what Jorg was working with AIG to supply, but, it seems they’ve hit some snags. What those snags are we can only guess.
It’s horrible that it isn’t even working with the planes it comes with. You always need to be in the same plane plus same design, otherwise it’s the bonanza or an airliner. Even as I said with the stock aircraft
You may be right. In which case sort and match on something that does tally. It just needs to be consistent. As an example the Blacksquare King Air and the Textron Aviation King Air still both have King Air in the name somewhere so perhaps search in the aircraft name/number rather than manufacturer. Just a quick idea and there may be some clever way to improve this and the hangar sorting around whatever limitations there are. Almost anything along those lines has got to be better than what we already have.
There are three different types of definitions provided in the aircraft.cfg
UI - this is for what it’s named in the sim in the UI
ATC - this is the definition of what ATC calls the plane
icao - these values are used for model matching.
I have no idea on the legalities of names on and what developers can and can’t use where. There’s possibly an issue with them selling a product and saying they’re selling a “blah blah - blah blah blah”.
I doubt extremely that companies can complain (or would even know about) the icao and ATC definitions. So these values should be very usable and set-able to the correct values.
The UI definitions would be the only thing I could imagine that might be not usable. Only a trademark/copyright lawyer can really comment here.
AMEN… Well said !
It seems that it is going to stay that way too…
Always seems to be one thing after another preventing good old honest model matching.
I am running ONLY stock aircraft and I constantly see cessna’s screaming over the airports at mach 1.5
Amazing ! It all about REVENUE !
Only that doesn’t actually work.
I have the default helicopters installed, I still see hovering Bonanzas.
I have the default F18 installed. I still see a generic airliner instead
Someone will have a small GA plane I don’t own, I see an airliner
Someone will have a taildragger I don’t own, I see a Bonanza doing a wheelie.
The model matching is completely borked. It’s one of the multitude of reasons I don’t fly with multiplayer enabled.
