I don’t think the stones used in concrete are this large… (3-6 inches).
Usually they’re smaller, like 0.2-1.5 inches.
From my experience looking at concrete anyway.
To me this is just another way this game could look better and more realistic. It makes me lose the sense of scale since my brain has been wired to see concrete at a certain size.
Maybe it’s because it’s not meant to be looked at that distance. smaller pebbles require higher texture resolution, and higher texture resolution requires higher VRAM which can bring your GPU to its knees.
It may be less realistic, but I’m pretty sure running the sim at 5 FPS with awesome graphics would be even more unrealistic.
I’m sure you wouldn’t notice, each stone already takes up like 20 pixels, I’m sure having it take up just 4 instead, would not make a huge difference.
Like you said, it’s not meant to be seen that close anyway, so, who cares if it’s a little blurry? as long as from 6ft-> upwards it looks reasonably real.
This is just how textures get made. Larger than life so they can be seen at lower resolutions and so they won’t eat all your memory.
You notice this a lot with clothing textures in RPGs, if you focus on the threads, they can look like yarn. Way too big for real life.
But they do what they are called, they provide a texture to what would otherwise appear to be a smooth surface.
Could they make more detailed textures? Sure. Would they be worthless to people with 1080p monitors and degrade performance across all systems? Indubitably.
Now, go back to last generation’s flight sims and compare their textures to today’s and you will quickly see things are moving in the right direction.
You will also notice things like grass blades didn’t exist or if they did, they didn’t articulate in the wind.
The Realism Paradox is something. The closer things get to real, the more easily we spot the most minor differences.
