Iconic Welsh airport may close

Sadly, the beautiful Llandegley International Airport is to close unless funds can be raised.

This airport has welcomed dozens of people over the past twenty years, with many passengers enjoying the cafe in particular (located at Terminal 1 in case you can’t find it). Whilst some travellers have reported difficulties in locating the airport itself, the airport authorities insist signage is adequate.

“Llandegley International is more than just an airport, as well as being less than just an airport”.

But where is terminal 2?

People have enough difficulty finding terminals 1 and 3, let’s not add to the confusion.

Used to occasionally drive past this sign ,any idea what is was all about ,farmer with sense of humour?

Terminal 2 was, obviously, the freight hub with a separate entrance

Possibly, but I think the most plausible explanation is that there is no number two in Welsh.

You drove past but didn’t pop into the cafe? People would travel all the way from Builth Wells for a slice of Llandegley toast and a cup of tea.

No wonder a lot of welsh people I saw looked pained if they couldn’t have a ‘number 2’!

I saw this recently and its been a great way to drive interest to the tiny village.

It was a journalist. I read somewhere that he used to write for Terry Jones from Monty Python.

It might be because of this:

Yeah, there’s been a spate of these ever since a casino opened at Penybont.

I heard that one of the Saudi royals was looking to build a leisure complex at Crossgates, probably won’t happen if this airport does close. The loss to the economy, especially the petrol station and cafe at Crossgates, will be immense. Thoughts and prayers with the local community.

Well, there’s your problem. That boils down to around 1-2 passengers/year

Yes I was in too much of a panic to get back to England to stop there…

There were staffing issues I believe which hampered passenger numbers. The airport can comfortably accommodate up to 5 passengers a day, but we’ve never actually seen that. Terry was going to be manning check-in when he left school, but he went and got a job in an estate agents in Llandrindod Wells instead. They never found anyone to replace him and Gwyn couldn’t run the cafe and do check-in, he’s only human!

I live near Dudley, I’m never in a panic to get back there.

I believe the proposed casino was going to interfere with the local cheese quarry, and there was a planning objection.

You are of course correct. Myfanwy has been extracting cheese from that quarry for over 30 years. I think she said the vibrations from the roulette table would destabilise the cheese face and result in it splitting along the veins.

Hang on there, I’m in terminal 2 right now standing in line with at least one other person waiting to check in. Are the staff having a break?

Well, that’s the problem right there, you’re at Terminal 2. Nobody at the airport is quite sure where it is, it isn’t on the signs you see.
If you could make your way to Terminal 1, I believe there is a flight from there to Doncaster, or possibly Stevenage, somewhere foreign anyway.

No problem , we’re now just about to board a Cessna Citation that’s heading for Yardro International Airport. We’re going there for the shopping…
