If you thought the white dot was annoying, get a load of what controller users have to put up with too

Let me start by saying I’m generally happy with SU5 and WU6 but this new feature is more infuriating than even the white dot.

Check out this very short video captured to illustrate this all new gamified ‘feature’ that appeared with SU5 for controller users. Excuse the framerate; my sim is not tuned to run with video capture at the same time.

That’s right, whenever controller users look at any screen on the cockpit (that has touch screen functionality) it lights up with a white border. There is no way to disable this behaviour.

For the last month, I had no idea it was even meant to signify touch screen functionality. I thought it was some really weird bug. It wasn’t until I installed the NXi mod and found that it was now also happening to all my G1000 screens that I asked why in the NXi thread. Matt from Working Title graciously replied explaining that it appears on all touch screens and that there was no way to disable it. So the fact that I didn’t even understand why it exists without being told means that it’s not even successfully conveying the information it’s meant to. It’s just an eyesore for no good reason.

Why oh why do Asobo think that controller users, and ONLY controller users, can’t understand the difference between a touch screen and regular one? It doesn’t happen for mouse users or any other control scheme. Maybe Asobo think controller and console users are a bit thick and cant figure it out themselves, but even if that’s the case, why does it ALWAYS appear? Like every single time I look at the screen I have to endure the white border. I get it, it’s a touch screen, you don’t need to keep telling me.

Take another look, it’s so obtrusive that it’s even covering up my radio frequencies and buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Anyway, enough angst. Please, Asobo, just remove this failed feature or at the very least give us an option to disable it when you implement the functionality to disable the white dot that appears in the middle of the screen. You are going to give us that option right?

I do genuinely understand the need to appeal to both gamers and simmers now, but don’t force simmers to endure gamified UI elements that they don’t need. Simply give us the option to disable them and everyone will be happy.

If you’re on a PC, revert the interaction mode back to Legacy. If you’re on a console, you may be able to plug in a mouse and do the same thing there, but I’m not sure.

That works? I’m off to test it. If it works, I’ll take it as a viable work around for now.

Unfortunately, I just tested. It doesn’t get rid of the white borders. I’m actually really disappointed. Right now I find it super hard to enjoy the sim because this effect is so immersion breaking. We can get rid of all other UI elements but I have to endure my screens lighting up like a Christmas tree every time I look in their direction.

With all due, how is this “annoying”? I guess I just don’t see this as a major deal. Not saying it shouldn’t be fixed, but let’s put some things in perspective?

Would you like this whenever you look at a screen with the mouse? Of course you wouldn’t. All other UI elements can be disabled, why would we want the screens to light up with a white border for no reason. It’s immediately immersion breaking. It’s just as annoying as the white dot, and the oversized tooltips. It’s utterly unnecessary.

Exactly. Anyone who doesn’t need to deal with it, won’t understand how annoying it is. But when I’m flying along enjoying the beautiful scenery, and half believing I’m in a real aircraft, I look down to check my speed and my cockpit lights up reminding me it’s just a game. It’s really horrible.

Trust me, if the dot annoys you, the big white box would annoy you far more if you had no possible way to remove it. At least the white dot can be deactivated so I can look around without it. I can’t deactivate the white boxes.

Yeah, don’t bash the testers. It’s fairly clear reading between the lines that the testers are telling Asobo about the issues but they aren’t resolving them as fast as we might like.

For example. Matt from Working Title said he’d pass on the request to remove this white box feature to the devs. I also sent a Zendesk ticket pleading for it’s removal before making this post. But even with both of those things done, I felt like I may be waiting months to see a resolution to this issue. It’s such a horribly unnecessary eye sore that it’s super hard for me to enjoy or even want to play the game right now. So I thought I’d make a post here and hopefully show Asobo that this is an issue that others also want resolved along with the white dot. It’s such a simple fix. Give us a menu option to deactivate them. Job done. Everyone happy.

Totally agree… on everything. My only intent, above, was that it’s not the end of the world seeing a white box around my instrument panel. It’ll hopefully get fixed, at some point.

I get you too. Just trust me that it’s worse than you think if you constantly have to live with it. It constantly breaks my immersion with the sim, and isn’t that why we are here, to be immersed into the sim?

Testers weren’t given access to the World Update 6. This isn’t a difficult thing to understand.

While we are here, there are other possibly better options that might be discussed. I understand the sentiment behind the white box. While using a controller, everything lights up when you point at it. Knobs and buttons glow etc. It lets the controller user know what he can and can’t interact with. I think it was more an Xbox related feature than a controller feature, but I digress.

The glowing knobs are however subtle and really quite hard to activate unintentionally. The big white box appears when I have no possible want or need to interact with the screen though. I’m just looking down to see my speed and it appears for no useful reason. It just breaks the mood and immersion.

So a better solution that kinda meets both viewpoints is to have the screen glow with the white border only for the first few times that the player looks at the screen and then never again. That way, the player is taught that this screen can be interacted with but they don’t need to keep being told. It’s a bit like being poked in the arm. Once or twice doesn’t bother us. But if some idiot keeps poking us it soon gets really irritating until we are ready to smack 'em round the side of the head.

Then again, like I said before, I didn’t even understand what the white box was even for until I was told by a dev so ultimately, it’s really just a big fat fail that needs a serious rethink.

It is even worse when you use TrackIR and just look around the cockpit or focus on one of the screens.

Everytime your view passes along or is focused on those screens, you get the white border.

For exactly this reason it‘s always more than one tester. I‘m in a beta team too and my opinions often contradict those of other testers. There‘s never a consense, eventually it has been found but developers decide.

My controller straight up doesn’t work. It’s a Microsoft XBox controller which I’m using with Microsoft Windows 10 and a Microsoft Game. And it just starts to drift and press buttons and freak out. Fine in every other game.

That’s a shame because the Xbox Controller is actually a fantastic way to play the game. Take a look at the last 5 seconds of the clip above. Notice how I can move smoothly all around inside the cockpit while simultaneously looking wherever I want. Just like in a first person shooter I’m using the left stick to move around, and the right stick to look around. I’m using an Xbox One controller, btw, and it works flawlessly. The only part I hate about using a controller is that ■■■■ white box, but I think I mentioned that already.

I dont see any of these issues. I have track ir and I don’t see the white dot in the middle or the cockpit screens lighting up. I mostly fly the FBW a320 but I’ve flown some of the smaller planes too.

Edit: it seems to be an issue if you use a controller?

Exactly. It ONLY happens for controller users. It’s not an issue. It’s a feature that is meant to somehow help the poor dumb controller users to understand that some screens are touch screens. Why Asobo thinks that controller users can’t figure that out, the same as everyone else, is beyond me.

Edit: Sorry, for the negative energy there. Dang it’s hard not to after reading these forums today. Lots of negativity. I guess it’s everyone trying to share their frustrations in the hope their own problems get sorted.

Fair enough. That video was an immersion killer. Hopefully they fix this in the next sim update. Good luck.

That is bad. It even covers up some of the data on screen, such as radio frequencies. Edit - oops, I missed you said that already.
