HI,
I understand taht this question has been already asked like thousand times, but unfortunatelly non of the provided answers on forums or on YouTube are matching what I see within the aircraft. Long story short, King Air doesnt pick the flightplan and doersnt follow it, it keeps circuling in a loop. Also, setting CDI to LOC1 (for example) assuming that the ILS freq is correct, not even intercepted and I have (in the end) to land manually myself. I made sure to properly configure an IFR plan from the Workd Map, then set FD, NAV, altitude and the rest settings, however, once AP is turned on, the airplance keeps circulating in a loop. Manual HDG works fine, but I’d like to use NAV. CDI has only the following modes, GPS, COM1, and COM2, when I split the screen to dial in the ILS frequency, clicing on NAV1 or NAV2 does nothing, I’m not prompted to enter the values as I can see video tutorials, and I couldn’t find a CDI mode called “FMS”, only the mentioned ones above. I have a very similar issue in BC Bonanza. I’m sorry for that long writing but it’s frustrating. Back in the day in MSFX, it was very easy to instruct the aircaft to follow the route via NAV. Now I can’t
Thanks and awaiting your kind help with a step-by-step guide, please.
Use “Nav 1 Frequency” button to enter the VOR or ILS you wish to tune, then press “Enter” to set the frequency as standby. To make the frequency active press XFER, using XFER after entering a frequency will activate it immediately. In order for the autopilot to follow an active VOR radial you must set your CDI source to VOR 1 in the PFD, and use the CRS 1 knob on the FMS to set desired course. With an ILS the green needle will snap to the correct heading when the frequency is detected. You do need to fly your airplane into a position where the VOR or ILS can be intercepted, either by hand or using HDG mode on the FMS, ideally using an offset of about 30 degrees to the green needle.
In the screenshot the aircraft is about to intercept the INS VOR (109.20) inbound on 252 degrees, having just switched from HDG (approx 270 deg) to the pre-armed VOR mode. Ignore the heading bug as I have reset it after VOR capture. In the MFD you can see the standby frequency tuned is 108.50 which is the ILS for Inverness, once this ILS is made active I will arm APPR mode on the FMS which will then capture the localiser and glideslope. Hope this helps, please forgive me if I am making things over simplistic for your abilities!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond to my question, but, I’m not sure how would it be set to VOR and would still intercept ILS, but maybe I lack some knowledge here indeed. I will follow these steps you’ve proficed and let you know soon. Have a nice weekend!
Think of it this way, VOR and ILS use radio waves from ground based transmitters. In the case of a VOR the signal radiates away from the beacon like the spokes of a wheel. ILS has two separate beams, the localiser which gives horizontal guidance, and glideslope giving vertical guidance. GPS on the other hand is a grid system, enabling a flight plan to be continuous from one reference to the next, and independent from any fixed ground transmitters. Be aware if you use an airport based VOR to find your way to the airport, once there you must switch to the ILS frequency, this will not happen automatically in this case.
The easier option is to follow a GPS flight plan, with an ILS Approach included. In this case the navigation system will preload the required ILS frequency, and change the navigation mode to VOR for you. You still need to arm APPR on the FMS prior to glideslope capture (once the magenta needle on the PFD changes to green) though.
Thanks for the info. So far I import flight plans either from LNM or SimBrief, it can easily now follow the plan with CDI set to GPS mode, and it points directly to the destination runway, however, I keep waiting for ATC or the approach center to start my descent, which never happens at the right time and I’m like 4000 ft above the runway (IFR low-altitude plan) but anyway, this is a side problem now that I will work on fixing. I have another issue with the G1000 in that p;lan. when I go to “Audio” where I can set a NAV freqiuency, clicking either on NAV1 or NAV2 does nothing, the keypad doesn’t showup, and a preset config is already configured for COM1 and COM2, is it okay that the GPS mode uses COM? and Iagain) clicking on NAV1 or NAV2 does nothing and im unable to enter the frequency myself. but maybe it’s hard-coded because of the imported plan, not so sure.. is it also true that ATC causes issues to ILS landing? and should I ask for IFR instrument landing clearance to have the “glide slope” activated?
Too many questions, sorry, but thanks for bearing with me.
I’ve made a simple VFR plan as per your guidance - in Navigraph - and also enabled the NAV/COM audio, and it started to beep then intercepted the glide slope and landed successfully. Thank you so much.
I was clikcing to enter the NAV freq at the wrong page actually, I needed to go to FPN and then enter the frequency there
I’d apprciate amswering my other questions and also if you have more tips for me sir.
Thank you once again for the time and effort helping me. Now I should teach others too!
The AUDIO tab on the PFD opens the Radios page where you can select NAV 1 radio button to hear the Morse Code ident for the active navigation aid, you cannot tune the radios here. To tune a frequency use Select Page then for example Nav 1 Frequency using the screen keypad. Probably in the real airplane you could also use the keypad on the centre console, but in the sim this is non functional except for the BARO control. Sadly the King Air is rather poorly represented in the sim with many cockpit controls inoperative. ATC in the sim also is less than ideal, and will often leave instructions to descend very late, or maybe even completely forget about you! My advice is to practice without using any ATC, or just ignore it and do your own thing when it instructs you to do stupid stuff. Stick at it though, you’re obviously getting to grips with navigating, remember there is a whole load of tutorials available online although not so much specifically for the King Air perhaps.
