ILS7 Approach, Circle around and land Rwy25?

Is this a thing?

CYXX active runway is 7/25 but I believe only has ILS on 7. Winds were 240 at 4Kn.

I was on IFR approach in a GA aircraft to CYXX and given the instructions to prepare for an ILS approach to runway 7 and then loop/circle around (not sure exactly what the phrase was) to land on runway 25.

Does this happen in the real world?

How are you supposed to fly this “loop” or “circle”?

I could not find a chart for this. They are here if anyone’s interested… https://fltplan.com/Airport.cgi?CYXX

This is called a “circle to land” and yes, it happens in the real world. Typically, you’d fly it similar to a visual traffic pattern.

Had the same yesterday in LSZH… the first time. Was funny and worked somehow

Amazing. Thanks.

Yes, you can circle to land on a different runway if the chart has appropriate stated circling minimums, or if approved by ATC when conditions are VFR(3SM visibility, 1000AGL cloud ceilings).

The chart: http://imageserver.fltplan.com/merge/Canada/merge200910/PngCharts/CYXX_ILS_RWY_07.png

So in this case, you could fly the ILS down to 940ft MSL. Then, break off and maintain between 940ft and the cloud ceiling, keeping the runway in sight at all times, and descend below 940ft when in a safe position to descend to land on the other runway.

For landing on 25 in this case, you’d break off to the right at minimums and join a slightly tighter than normal left downwind for runway 25, descending below minimums when on the base turn.
