Improve clouds in Live Weather

That’s interesting. The way I read the response from Seb is that he is saying that cloud rendering is a small element of local performance demand, which reinforces the view that limitations are server-side, but it’s certainly open to interpretation: by performance does he mean just local or total?

My view is just a theory based mainly on elimination of other plausible explanations. Reducing overall performance demand on local processors was part of the SU5 objective (for all players - mid end PC users were struggling with the performance demands also) so that is probably at least part of the reason.

Yes, maybe it is part of the root cause. That Dev Q&A also content other questions about weather and answers are really interesting for the ones that want to understand how it works in the sim. I hope that for the next Dev Q&A’s they’ll provide us some updates about actual Live Weather issues and improvements they are planning to implement.

Absolutely. The whole topic could do with some clarity. For a whole bunch of reasons the current status of cloud depiction in live weather is odd and really needs some explanation.

So… the clouds in next year’s sim look not much different than the current clouds. The lighting looks about the same to me as well.

I actually started out my day today thinking I might see an update showing great progress in weather depiction in the current sim – only to see that clouds are the one thing they never even bothered to change at all. yeesh!

oh well, progress I guess. There are good things in the new sim’s trailer but Im surprised its the same cloud appearance.

I wouldn’t lose too much hope - it’s only a trailer and we don’t know how much of it was run on the new engine (if any). The wow things like the animations could have all just been conceptual artwork.

its not a free update is it but a complete sequel? and we have to go through the same cycle of hoping and voting with that? also I dont think they will have the same contract with the weather provider meteoblue. there must be a big reason why they are splitting the title.

If you buy it, it will have a new icon on your desktop saying ‘MSFS2024’.

I imagine the main driver for this is, as the official announcements say, due to the availability of a new engines and to better leverage online capabilities.

they revamped the engine for console and kept the same title? at least changes between 2020 and 2024 will be easy to demonstrate so maybe clouds and live weather will improve. if not I wonder where we will continue to vote for it - here or the 2024 subforum or both…

It’s the same engine. They just added some new content/missions to the game. Even horizon line bug is visible on the trailer video.

Yeah, a trailer is just a trailer. It’s not the product but an indicator of what the product should be.

We’re not going to see detailed, higher definition distinct morphologies until the voxel density goes up considerably. You can see just how crude voxel resolution is when you look at the grid-like artifact seen from certain angles and lighting. It is equivalent to asking for high detail in the eyes, and other features in this portrait:

What I’ve noticed is that what we call “clouds” in MSFS, as contrasted from very thin diffuse fog, is easily managed by not only my 3080 Ti but the 2070 super before it and that is with Ultra on volumetric clouds on a 3440x1440 display–very little GPU impact overall and CPU for that matter. Fog and thin/diffuse can kill any GPU, but not what we call clouds. This means there is absolutely headroom in high end PC to amp up voxel density by way of a slider w/ greater range than the current one, and as I say until this happens forget expecting high resolution/detailed distinct cloud depiction. This is true for all sims using volumetric clouds.

Flying would be so much more realistic if Live Weather was able to fullly exploit the weather engine and/or better interpret MB data.

After having posted some realistic clouds generated using custom weather, I am posting unrealistic ones generated through Live Weather (Ultra) we have most of the time. I wish MSFS2024 will bring major improvements.

Yeah, this preset is really good, wish we had this with live weather.

I got FEC after seeing your screenshots.

It lives up to its name and certainly shows what the weather engine is capable of rendering.

BUT it tanked my FPS badly.

Now this was as I was beta testing an aircraft so there may have been issues or a conflict with that, but I felt my 3080ti should have been doing much better than it was.

It doesn’t tank my FPS, but I use clouds on high, not ultra.

Agreed - further digging suggests it was not to do with FEC but the beta aircraft I was testing

Same as TranquilitySea, I usually use FEC (Floyd Epic Clouds) on High, but even on Utlra I don’t see a real drop with my FPS and clouds are looking so much realistic vs the ones in Live Weather.

After playing around a bit with the weather settings, I’ve noticed you can have way nicer clouds making your own preset that what you get with live weather.

Would like to see this be improved in a upcomming update
