Increased CPU usage in SU16 Beta - large temperature spikes!

Description of the issue:
Whilst flying on the Beta, I’ve noticed my CPU temps spiking to pretty crazy levels that I had never seen before on MSFS - quite often hitting the very top end of 80c and up into the 90+ range at times which is concerning. It isn’t consistent, it will range massively from about 50-60c with constant spikes every 5s or so up to really high temps, then the fans will kick in at 100% and it will reduce, only to repeat again. Tabbing out can reduce this but it is still noticeable and reaches concerning temperatures.

Did you experience this issue before you joined the Beta?
No, and following this I left the Beta and went back to the last stable build. My flight on this build kept at around a constant 50-60c, with no notable spikes in temperature. This leads me to believe it is related to the Beta.

If applicable, which aircraft is experiencing this issue:
N/A, however I have flown the Fenix in both the Beta and the stable build.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
No, but returning to stable build with all my add-ons worked fine.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
Happened on every flight following the release of Beta for me.

Well, the hardware is designed for that, and these temperatures indicate that the GPU is running close to max capacity. That’s what I want MSFS to do. Why are you worried about that?

Mathijs

To be honest I think this is what was happening to me in 2020 and 2024 on the Xbox series x, I would get random shutdowns saying that it had overheated, thermal paste checked and replaced which was found be ok anyway. The fan wasn’t speeding up as it does on cyberpunk before shutting down just bang shutdown

The issue comes from the fact that this is new within the Beta build and does not happen on the current live build - a 20-30c increase in temperature is not a good thing especially for no known performance increase! Given that none of my settings have changed all it is doing is stressing my hardware seemingly unnecessarily, as the hardware is clearly capable of running it all at a lower temperature. This in fact threatens lower performance due to thermal throttling.

It is also the CPU, not the GPU, that is hitting these temps and it is doing it in spikes rather than constant - implying that it isn’t running at max capacity and is instead running in an unintended way as it is always fluctuating between 60-90c. The GPU actually runs fairly consistently but at about 5-10c higher than it does on the live build. If both ran around 70-80 on the live build I wouldn’t be concerned, but I feel that the notable increase particularly in CPU temperature spikes should be documented

Okay, now I understand your issue better. We feel different about hardware. When I see that some part of my setup has resources not being used, I will always try to force the sim to use it by increasing the settings. You prefer to see temperature as a limit and will use settings that keep those at a level you feel comfortable with.

At a recent event, I brought one of my test beds that has a 5-year-old 3060 Ti, and it stood next to two systems with >$1500 GPUs. My 3060 was running flat out, as it always does, and I matched the quality and frame rate of the two high-end systems because the owners did not want to push those systems seriously. In my opinion, that means they wasted $1000.

The only significant downside of running older hardware is that it comes with only 8 GB of memory. And that is not enough at this moment. If people ask me what GPU they should buy, I always recommend buying the cheapest one with 16 GB of memory. You can create FPS with the frame generation tools, but you cannot create memory.

The hardware may, by design, be able to achieve these high temperatures and function but it isn’t and shouldn’t be an indicator that it is working at max capacity. Sustained temps of 80c to 90c+ can actually damage a cpu, it is not a normal nor recommended operating temperature even at “max capacity”.

@i3su666

You didn’t by chance lose a cooling fan or two? How long has it been since you installed your CPU? What are you using to read CPU temps?

Interestingly, I’m on Xbox series X and the internals of my Xbox are clean (I opened it up and checked after this happened). While on SU16 beta, I’ve had my Xbox shut down on me twice claiming that it overheated. Yes it was a bit warmer in the room than it has been for a while but still less than 25 degrees. Had to turn a small desk fan to point at the bottom end of it which I normally only have to do when the room is approaching 30 degrees and then only for FS2020

This was a problem I was getting when 24 was released, what was odd though is that it would shut down due to lack overheating but the fan never changed speed, now if I was to play Cyberpunk it would never overheat but you would hear then fan maxing out as it’s pretty loud going full tilt

Exactly this though I’ve not yet had it in 2024 which runs noticeably cooler for me - the fan never got noisy. Just straight up turned off

All basically new - both the CPU and cooler were installed about a month or two ago and there’s no visible signs of anything not working. As mentioned, they work totally fine at around 60c in the current MSFS2020 build with good performance, it’s only in the beta that I was seeing the temp spikes.

As for monitoring the temps, I was using an inbuilt temperature reader on my DeepCool case which has usually proved to be pretty accurate. Also just through audio clues - the fans would get VERY loud every few seconds which coincided with the temperature spikes.

Ah okay, thanks for the reply!

In your bios, see what kind of temperature protection you have, as far as temp curves. You could adjust those curves to where the fans kick up in speed at lower temps to help keep your cpu at more acceptable temperatures in the meantime. Definitely don’t want to damage your cpu. While you’re in bios maybe look at your version and make sure it’s the latest bios as well, just to be safe.

Cheers!

To help with your temperature issues while gaming, we need a bit more info:

  • What motherboard are you using?
  • What’s your graphics card?
  • What kind of power supply do you have?
  • What case is everything in, and how many fans does it have?
  • Are you using air or liquid cooling for the CPU?

Hi,

Build:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor

CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper H412R 34.1 CFM

MOBO - MSI PRO B650M-P Micro ATX AM5

RAM - Crucial Pro Overclocking 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory

Storage - Kingston A400 960 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive x2, Crucial P3 Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

GPU - XFX Speedster MERC 310 Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB Video Card

PSU - MSI A1000G PCIE5 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

  • BIOS is basically unchanged from the default bar a few minor tweaks

The issue is not temperature whilst gaming in general - this setup works perfectly fine on all other games including the current sim update of MSFS2020. It ONLY gets these spikes on the MSFS beta build, which is why I believe it is a software issue related to the beta. As mentioned in the original post, I regularly run at near-ultra settings comfortably at about 60c on the main release, but on the beta I get spikes to 90c or higher. @KillerJackson82 I think this reply also covers your response too!

Thanks for your help both, ultimately I think this is an Asobo issue but I’d be curious to see if anyone else encounters similar issues on their PC’s. It seems like it could be affecting Xbox users as the temp spikes may be causing shutdowns, but those users would have to confirm that they are on the beta build! (Idk if Xbox even has access to the beta!)

I just did a test flight in MSFS 2024 SU3_beta with the Cessna 172 Skyhawk G1000 from EGLC towards EGLL and back to EGLC. I didn’t notice any temperature spikes up to 90C.

You mentioned two different CPUs - could you clarify which one is correct or which one you actually have?

Apologies, copy and pasted that from an old post! I’m using the 7800X3D

No problem. Could you please post your full and correct PC configuration again?

Thanks for the updated specs. Could you also provide the BIOS version you’re using? Since you mentioned tweaking some settings in BIOS, could you specify what changes were made?

FWIW, I’ve had SU16 since it was released and don’t see any difference in CPU load. I have an Asus laptop with I7-11800H

Interesting, thanks for the input! It is entirely possible that I just got a dodgy install of the beta in that case! I’ll avoid going back to it for now just for the sake of my PC components, but will keep an eye on my performance in the meantime! The beta does seem to be affecting other people but inconsistently!
