Increasing Terrain level of detail causes stuttering on the ground but no drop in FPS

Yes

Brief description of the issue:

I get stuttering on the ground when I increase the terrain LOD but the FPS doesn’t drop. If I set Terrain LOD to 10 it’s reasonably smooth but increasing it beyond 30 causes stutters. This only happens on the ground, in the air it’s fine

Do you really mean 10 & 30? Or 100 / 300?

That is the single main impact on performance, yes.

But you have a great system, you should be able to run 150 at least IMO. Must be something else causing / contributing to it.There is a TON of posts on the forum about this issue. Have you read any of those and followed any tips?

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to add that I’m flying in VR.

Yes I have to set terrain LOD to 10, not 100. It’s fine at 100 when I’m in the air but on the ground it causes lots of stuttering, especially at bigger airports.

I’ve looked at other posts about similar issues to this but can’t find the answer unfortunately

I don’t know about VR but still you should be getting higher than 10. That’s very low. What other settings are you using? I’d suggest posting in one of the VR performance threads for advice though, as I don’t think this is strictly a “bug”.

Disable or clear the rolling cache. That fixed it for me in VR with 13700K/4080 flying at TLoD 150.

I’ve tried with rolling cache both on and off but the performance is still the same. I think it’s a CPU limitation rather than GPU as I seem to have plenty of GPU headroom but I’m using a 5800x3d which is supposed to be very good for MSFS. It’s much worse at bigger airports

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Yes. I can run up to about 150-200 Terrain LOD. Severe stuttering at high settings. 7950x3d + RTX 4090 1gbps fiber.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

Seems to be worse low to the ground. I haven’t tried to see if manual cache helps.

You should be able to run LOD at least 200 with your machine. I have the same GPU but a 13900. With airliners I run LOD at 200 by default, for GA planes 250-300 and have almost zero stutters. What are your other settings?

Are you running in VR like the OP?

which one are you doing? disabling the RC? or periodically flushing it?

I have it completely off with cache file deleted because it’s never provided any noticeable advantage on my rig.

thanks. Exactly what I did a long while back. Shut if off, and removed the cache file. Like you, I’ve never seen a noticeable benefit.
