Anybody flying this on Xbox? Why does the nosewheel gear/steering feel so dead and numb unless you crawl down to about 4-5 kts ground speed?

I can see the nosewheel turning, almost 90° if I jam one of the triggers but it doesn’t seem to be having much effect on actually steering the aircraft. Anybody else?

I’ve noticed this nagging issue since day one. All other aircraft are fine except for the Felon of course as that’s a bug in the aircraft.

I noticed a while back that the F-35 taxis fine when she’s heavy, but if you are light (i.e. almost out of fuel) she doesn’t want to turn. I think it’s a bug that needs fixing.

probably oversteering, if it almost turns 90*, you will just slide straight ahead on it instead of turning. try just tapping the steering slightly to only partially deflect the nosewheel (or if you have an additional axis put the steering ideally on an axis)

Already tried that doesn’t work. This is the only key that is giving me trouble. I’ve seen real videos of F-35 taxiing at faster speeds but in the game I have to bring it down to 3-4 kts ground speed to get the nose to steer properly. No way is this how the real jet is at taxi speeds.

I suspect that is the actual issue. I will load her up and see if it makes a difference as I usually don’t have much of a problem taxiing for takeoff. It’s after landing and taxiing to parking that the front nose gear can feel very unresponsive. I make it turn, I can see the wheel deflecting too but it doesn’t grip the tarmac and instead just scrapes along.

I play on Xbox. Haven’t had issue with ground handling though I generally roll quite slowly. But it’s true that you should never apply full rudder as the nose wheel will slip. If I don’t forget I will test it to see how it behaves at certain speeds.

I have tried that too… Making very minor corrections to ensure that the nosewheel doesn’t slip and drag along. You just have to really, really slow down on this aircraft to turn properly. However, at 3 kts ground speed I think I should be able to deflect the wheel fully without it scraping along and the aircraft moving practically in a straight line. It’s very annoying!

The next F-35 update will contain rewritten nose wheel steering code, with “high” and “low” settings selectable. Let’s hope this will solve all these ground handling issues.

I read that in the updated version nose wheel steering doesn’t work until you bind a key to a specific function. Okay, this may be more realistic, but I hope the developers keep in mind that there are people with controllers (both on PC and Xbox), and there’s only so many functions one can bind to it. It’s not necessarily a good idea to keep adding features that require new bindings. An in-aircraft settings menu would be better, and probably more expandable as well, as is the case with many aircraft with tablets and such.

Also, if this is really a feature on the real plane (nose wheel steering OFF / LOW / HIGH) then there must be a button or switch for it in the cockpit. Why not make that operable instead of forcing users to bind a new key?

The key is probably on the backside of the stick, so not really accessible to be clicked

That would be not a problem, you only have to click it once after all. The F-18 has a similar method, the NWS switch is on the back of the stick. You have to move the camera a little to see behind it but it’s not a big deal.

You can also use the default asobo NWS binding

There’s a default Asobo binding? Sorry I don’t follow. I just use rudder left/right to steer the aircraft and only need to use toggle for nws on the Hornet. And A320 V2 bit that’s from the tablet and not options.

I’m completely lose on this. I juat want the NWS to work when the update for the F-35 drops. So all I need to do is toggle something on the stick to hi or lo?

“SET NOSE WHEEL STEERING TO LIMIT”

GEE THANKS

Should I be looking for this in the control options?

Yes, and this is what I refered to in my original post. Previously you could steer the plane by default with the rudders. Now you have to add an additional key binding in order for it to work. My controller is congested already as it is, so I don’t yet know how I’ll solve the additional binding. If it’s mandatory at all. I’m perfectly fine using a switch in the cockpit, if there’s one and if it’s operable at all. This is what we don’t yet know since nobody explained it clearly, and the update is not yet available on the marketplace.

2 words. USB Keyboard, works fine with xbox and you have more binding options than you can slew a re hashed f18 at

First, the space I’m playing in wouldn’t allow using additional peripherals. Second, I like the practicality of the Xbox controller and it works fine with every aircraft so far. I would never intend to purchase and patch on a cumbersome keyboard just because some aircraft would need keybindings for some insignificant features. In this case, if switching nose wheel steering on/off is truly a feature in the F-35 then it must have its switch somewhere physically. I doubt real pilots attach a keyboard before flight to turn it on.

Brother, get a wireless 10key numpad and then you can have all the key binds you want with a minimal footprint.

As for the nose wheel steering switch, front side of stick maybe? Cant remember for sure and it’s been so long(pre major update) that I’ve been in the F35.

I doubt they also use an xbox controller either so thats a moot point
