Inibuilds A320n v2 RNAV and autopilot use question.
I’m learning the automation in RNAV approaches using the new inibuilds A320n v2.
I can’t get the altitude and speed automation correct after loading an RVAV approach and using autopilot during the approach (by autopilot I mean the combination of AP1, auto throttle, throttles at the CL detent, and managed speed and managed altitude modes after loading an RNAV approach and programming direct to the IAF at the IAF constraint altitude).
The autopilot will fly the legs but will continue to lose speed until the TOGA lock kicks in and the autopilot climbs out of a stable approach as a result. I get the safety purpose of the TOGA lock, but I am just trying to fly a stable RNAV approach using managed speed and altitude modes.
I’ve noticed that I get the “Check appr selection” notice and that an ILS frequency is in the NAV RAD page. Do I need to clear the ILS frequency on that page? How do I do that? Would that affect the automation/autopilot following the vertical constraints and speed automatically during the approach? When do I use APPR mode during the approach?
I have watched a couple of YouTube videos. A lot of the programming is already done on the few I’ve seen. I think I am just missing some step(s) in the FMS programming, hence reaching out here.
Doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong. I’ve taken to always using selected speed in the A20N v2 once I’m within 15 miles of the airport - the Vapp given by the MCDU is just a bit too close to the orange bar on the speed tape which will cause TOGA LK to kick in and needs looked at in my opinion. Best thing to do is specify your own Vapp by typing a number and inserting it on the approach page. When I do this, I tend to add at least 5kts to what it says it should be and/or go with what simbrief says it should be on their new performance tab
You can arm APPR mode at any point between FL100 and the IAF but I find it best to do it a few miles before the IAF
I just tried these with no luck, after loading and using KSEA RNAVZ 16L approach. Here is what I did:
Appr page in FMS. Activated approach phase. Entered a higher speed in the VAPP block that would not result in a stall or TOGA lock activation. No luck, the speed continued to reduce as I approached KENMO waypoint at 5,000 feet.
F-PLN page. Activated approach phase. Loaded higher speeds into each waypoint along the path (KENMO, HELZR, KARPO, DGLAS. No luck, the speed continued to reduce and would not maintain the higher speeds I inserted.
Attempted to use selected speed at a speed higher than would result in stall/TOGA lock. It simply did not work. The speed continued to fall, even after making the adjustments in 2. and 3. above, activating TOGA lock.
The whole time, managed altitude and managed speed were selected, except for #3 above, in which case I used selected speed. Yes, AP1 and Auto Throttle were activated and throttle was in CL detent.
Obviously I assume this is user error. Any ideas? Selected speed worked fine in the Asobo A320 (even managed speed worked sometimes, it seems). Or do I keep researching all these YouTube videos and hope I find something in the programming and approach sequence/autopilot that I’m missing?
