Today I departed out of Jomo Kenyatta HKJK in the default A330-300. I’m running a flight monitoring software Pilotleague along side the sim. It had noted that while departing north out of the airport the aircraft on autopilot banked more than 30 degrees. This left me wondering if it’s possible in an Airbus to set the maximum bank angle I would like to use?
Airbus have protections that prevent more than a 30 degree bank angle (you can go slightly beyond but you have to hold it there - it will return to 30 when you let go). Was it a sustained bank or did the software just pick up that it happened? If turning with a 30 degree bank and there was a sudden gust that could cause a short excursion beyond 30 degrees but the aircraft would never do it otherwise
In Boeings, you can set the bank angle that you want it to use but this only works for heading mode. In LNAV mode, it decides itself what angle to use based on altitude and speed, same as an Airbus. Old Airbus (A300 and A310) have a toggle for 15 or 30 degree bank but again, this only works in heading mode
Later I determined that there may have been a safety restriction for banking 30 or more degrees while under 1000 ft AGL that triggered the violation. There was a turn immediately after the runway and it began at 760 ft.
And that raises another question, I have not figured out how to determine the altitude in AGL. The PFD shows altitude in ASL.
Thanks, that will be helpful.
