Instead of having reindeers on the runway at every scandinavian airport, it would be much cooler to have fauna implemented which you actually encounter regularly irl.
Like insects during summer nights. I’m talking about mosquitos flying in swarms at airport floodlights, or cricket sounds near grass areas at the airport, it’s that stuff which would make the sim feel so much more alive, not Zebras etc.
While I agree in spirit, adding the sound of mosquitoes is a bridge too far. Some things simply don’t need to be emulated. I hear one of those and it’s going to be me swatting at the air in my office. I’m okay with the distant sound of crickets. At minimum, add sliders so we can turn insects and their sounds on and off at will.
Why not start with larger animals rabbits, mice, cats, seagulls, pigeons, raven, maybe some dog on a GA airfield would make most sense to me. So mostly animals which don’t migrate but rather large in comparison to a human. When it comes to birds you’d find them mostly off the airport area but still in close proximity and in general at low altitudes.
I think the choice for now when it comes down to animals is for two reasons:
Photo mode - I don’t think mosquitoes and crickets will be featured there
In general being able to spot them from above, also as possible “hazards” even if they currently don’t cause damage
While for immersion of course the mentioned insects make perfect sense I think it’s more some “nice to have” thing compared to other things.
Anyway I don’t also think the wish is utterly complex to be added to MSFS24 as we already have biomes: cricket sounds could be added at least to grassland and dry regions playing from dusk to dawn whenever it’s hot and dry (to not exclude the southern hemispheres or regions without seasons). Mosquitos could be added to static light sources as small random particle effects which interact with lights (however the question is if you’d see them due to DLSS and TAA ghosting. Just take a look at the aircraft fuselage and wings using an external camera whenever you fly through rain: did you actually notice that the rain is running down the whole aircraft? It does, but on white paint and using anti aliasing it’s barely visible until you really zoom in).
So the real question is if it’s beneficial to add effects for such small lifeforms or if most of us won’t notice them anyway due to technical limitations. I guess a better choice would be to start from moths and butterflies due to their size.
X-Plane 12 beta introduced birds to the sim. Those makes sense since they are a serious safety hazard in aviation and something to consider during flight. That said, the CPU and GPU are already maxed out with the current state of simulators, perhaps wise to use their resources for more important task like flight model and weather.
