Installation failed in Microsoft Store / Xbox App (0x87E00017)

It all started with SU6 not showing up on Windows 11, after a while I got so frustrated that I though “let’s just reinstall the game quickly”… Since then the mess just got worse and I am quite angry, especially since I liked the game quite much!

Every time I now want to install the game (both in Microsoft Store or the Xbox App) I get the error message “unexpected problem, cannot install” with error code 0x87E00017.

Now I have followed all available help or forum posts, such as:

Of course I have also contacted the support over Zendesk, but just got the bull**** advice from above which I had already done.

I have even reinstalled Windows 11 and then Windows 10 multiple times completely, but still everytime I get this very strange and annoying error. Somehow I believe this is connected with the Digital Ownership which cannot be installed.

And yes I have done the following steps too:

  • reinstall windows including erase of disks
  • reset of Microsoft Store
  • reinstall Gaming Services
  • reinstall Xbox App
  • log out and reboot
  • and many many more…

I Have the same problem followed the same procedures nothing worked. Wondering now how long it will be before I can fly again, disappointing!

Yesterday I was trying to narrow down the problem: for this I bought Game Pass which showed the problem is not only for Flight Simulator (which I bought):

  • Age of Empires IV —> same problem (0x87E00017)
  • Age of Empires III Definitive (which I bought) —> same error (0x87E00017)
  • Tropico 6 —> same problem (0x87E00017)
  • Forza Horizon 4 —> worked!!

But this is really strange that this error is only happening some specific games :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Any VPN software installed?

Thank you @TenPatrol for the hint!! I am not using a VPN, but PiHole to block all DNS-Requests for Ads and telemetry data… But this was the problem :grin:. As soon as I turned off Pihole, the installation is running and now I am just waiting for the download to complete. So happy! Thank you so much :grinning_face:!!

TL;DR: disable Pihole and everything works fine…

THIS! This fixed my issue! Thank you so much, after wiping my system, doing a clean install of Windows 11. PiHole was the issue for me too!

Same issue. Tried all the fixes mentioned above. Game was working flawlessly including after Update 6 til Nov 10 when the App would not open and sent me to the store to download. The downloads start but stop halway through w error 0x8007112A. I do not use pihole or a VPN and do not even know what they are to look. Got about 6 hours into trying fixes suggested here w no luck. I had been using the game without issues (Except for update issues).
Any suggestions appreciated!
