Integrate translation tool into the forum site

Move this to a ‘Wishlist’ if you want, but it’s a request for the forum code, not the sim code.

Our beloved sim has members from all over the world.
Currently they are asked to do their best to post only in English.
Some use Google Translate or other translation tools.
Some try to write in English, and their posts are only slightly easier to read than their native tongue.

Perhaps, Microsoft could add an AI function into the forum that automatically translates any post to modern English.

This is not an elitist request. The rule in the CoC is “This forum is only able to support the English language currently, thus English only posts.”

Why not make it easier for our non-English speaking fellow pilots?

I do think that this is a good idea, however, it would be a task to make something of this type in my opinion. I can’t speak for the team though :cowboy_hat_face:

There is a plugin for this which can be added from Discourse Meta (the software the forum uses)

That I think would do this task but not sure.

I run my own forum that uses this software and making something like this would be a challenge as I mentioned.

Will have to see! I think it would be really cool :sunglasses:

Cheers!

Every post written in a language that is not English has a little translate icon that you can click to get the translation. It actually does work quite well. I tried it with a recent German post and the translation was quite good.

I never noticed that. It’s helpful, for sure.
Interesting that the forum code recognizes non-English posts and adds that functionality.

I’m not a forum moderator, but I am one of the administrators in the official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord server.

In a perfect world, I’m sure it would be very easy to allow multiple languages on the forum, or our Discord server for that matter (which is also English only), however, we don’t live in such a world. A lot of context can be lost in a translation, context that might matter for a complete understanding of what a user is trying to convey.

There are already several examples of people doing their best to bypass content filters on here, words and phrases that have been blocked because they’re hurtful, derogatory, and serve no other purpose than to harass or demean others. The job of a moderator is to filter out these words and stop people from creating such an atmosphere in the community, make it a good place to be for anyone regardless of their background.

If we were to allow everyone the ability to use every language imaginable out there, we would also need moderators capable of understanding every language imaginable out there, because languages are very advanced and can be used in ways that might not seem obvious if directly translated. For the benefit of everyone, and especially those that moderate, it has been decided that English should be the common language for everyone to use on the community platforms for Microsoft Flight Simulator. That way, those that speak English as their first, second or even third language can utilize that, and the others that might not be that fluent in English can make use of client-side translators.

I’m not a native English speaker myself, but I understand why the communities I frequent don’t allow me to chat in Norwegian.

See post by @Papa4332 above.

The forum does have the ability to translate.
