I enjoyed the old lessons too. As we saw from the Flight Training lessons that come with MSFS, they are very basic (and not really authentic either).
Rod was fun, it had better jokes, but IFR has better training

I could imagine that Asobo left this field out by purpose!
Itās a good area for third-party developers to jump in.
Itās already happening with IFR lessons
If you really need the lessons, find a cheap FSX DVD somewhere and do the lessons. It still works in windows 10.
I found Rod Machado on Youtube - I did not do the FSX flight school, even if I have FSX.
This guy really knows his stuff, and he has a good voice, too. His Youtube video told me how to land a taildragger.
For those of you looking for the VFR side of things, FS Academy - VFR has just been released!
I just reinstalled FSX to take some lessons again, and I am in awe. Itās comprehensive. Itās deep. Itās step by step guidance with text, pictures, and real mission tutoring with the legendary Rod Machado. I really wish these fantastic lessons can be incorporated into MSFS. Good lesson is a necessity for any flight simulation, and itās especially so for MSFS as it is meant to attract a much larger new population into this hobby.
Thanks to the moderator for merging my post. How I didnāt see this appeal! Just upvoted and calling for more!
God, that would be great to have!
Absolutely, yes! Rodās lessons were deeply ingrained in the value of FS9/FSX. Straightforward, approachable, easy to understand⦠To be honest, that kind of instruction isnāt easy to find anywhere on any subject. Rod is a master of communicating the concepts of managing flight efficiently and understandably, and makes the intimidating aspects of piloting understandable to everyday folks. If the Asobo team wants to encourage people to think about learning to fly, re-creating Rodās lessons in MSFS would be a huge benefit.
For the love of all that is holy, YES. SOMETHING!
I hate to be a hater but, CāMON MAN. These are the worst training missions in the history of flight training missions.
IMO most of the lessons set a noob up for failure more than setting a noob up to succeed. There is always some lack of information or some bug. All I can think about is how frustrating it must be for the new flight simmer and how many will walk away angry, de-moralized and crushed by these horrible lessons.
A small glitch here and there is excusable but for the majority to have problems is unacceptable. Iād start firing everyone in charge of creating lessons. GT#O! The most amazing and historic flight simulator ever createdā¦failing to reach market potential and killed due to bad training lessons. OI!
The latest ones for Instrument flying are so bad and embarrassing. How can anyone with no experience even follow along? Even if you do have experience you have to do other steps not even covered in the lesson to get the proper CDI/NDB info displayed.
Messing with the training missions is always an all-nighter filing Zendesk reports.
Cāmon Microsoft/Asobo!
Hello all,
pls be kind answer one problem, as you said you do IFR trainings for MSFS in this time. Inside some Topic about IFR Training inside MSFS, one ILS app on EGPB airport, all simmers declare not working and failure mission, instead they fly preciselly till touchdown. Why they failed this mission? Can you be kind put some light to this problem?
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! PLEASE YES! Rod Machado FTW
The immortal words āIām sorry, youāve failed your checkrideā (voiced by Rodās wife, I believe) after another go at the IFR ticket are ingrained in my memory.
1000% yes.
Yes they do need some major reworking. I tried the IFR training one yesterday as Iāve not done any IFR before, sadly the first lesson failed to work correctly.
It asks you to climb up to 4500ft so you go into the clouds, and to maintain a heading of 270. That bit worked fine.
It then asks you to decend to 4000 ft which I did, unfortunately thatās where the lesson ended as it never recognised I was at 4000ft so didnāt move on to the next step. I tried going down to 3000ft and back up to 4000 etc⦠but nope, thatās where it ended.
Yes! Asobo, please work with Rod Machado on a new flight school. The amount of training material in MSFS is pitiful compared to FSX. FSX is still unbeatable as far as in-depth training material for a flight sim. Not only were the lessons fantastic (Rod teaches great stick and rudder skills), but there is a ton of ground school material. Please, bring this back to the same level in MSFS. Itāll probably never happen, but I loved (and still love) flying Rodās training missions!
Please upvote this thread so it has a chance of getting on the wish list!
Yes, but no one can replace Rod Machado
Asobo has not even a pdf manual for the aircraft !
I have the GREAT book of Rod for FS-X . The best.
So on a whim I sent a message on Rodās website asking about making missions for the new MSFS. What do you know? He actually replied and said no one has contacted him about this, and he is too busy right now even if they did. He said if they had asked him a while ago he might have been able to. Kind of a bummerā¦
I loved the old tutorials. I proudly printed out the certificates as a kid and they felt like an achievement.
Now iām through my ATPLs and flying as an A320 captain, I made my own take on flight training, based on my own experience.
It makes for a very authentic series of in game tutorials, covering IFR, VFR and Jetliner flying, with 12 missions each and a full accompanying ground school manual. I think theyāre unique in the Flight Simulator universe as theyāre made by a real airline pilot, so you can be sure that itās all genuine techniques and skills.
The Rod tutorials were great for the time, but I like to think that these packs are fresher, more thorough and full of authenticity.
A new pack is WIP and will be announced very soon!
