Is 4k monitor noticeably better than 2k?

Hmm, maybe an 85" or 120" 4K monitor might be too big? I don’t know. The 55" I am using looks great to me. But I don’t need reading glasses to read tiny text even though I’m almost 60 (really? Hmm, that’s hard to believe (that I’m almost 60)… what happened?), so there’s that. But, then again, the text isn’t really all that tiny on a 55" 4K monitor/TV. As I noted, it’s essentially life size and set about the same distance an instrument panel is to me in real life (I fly GA, like the planes I rent. I don’t have the 737.).

Don’t feel bad. I’m almost 68. Just a number. I used to fly C-172s in real life before some medical issues, so I get what you are saying.

One thing to bare in mind if you’re using a large 4K TV as a monitor is that although the resolution is 4K the actual pixel density is a lot less. I also use my PC for doing digital photography and it kind of rules out using a TV as I need really good colour accuracy and high pixel density. PC monitors are better but they do get very expensive for 40" or above.

I’ve got a Samsung 4K 32" monitor. Its pretty much perfect although I would get something slightly bigger if I could afford it.

I’ll be downloading KASH and KACK. I know the areas well.

Another thing to bear in mind with a 4K tv is that most have reflective screens. If you’re in a well lit room with natural day light and sat close it can be a bit annoying. I did have a 27” inch monitor and a 27” 1440p and the 4K is sharper but you would notice it more on a larger display. You also don’t get the same field of view on a 4K as opposed to an Ultrawide like what I have now. It’s nice to have the extra width which you won’t get on a 4K monitor/tv.

There are so many variables in deciding and it will ultimately come down to personal choice and what other things to consider. Another thing is pretty much all 4K monitors are only 60hz meaning that if you use it for other games with a fps you’re limited to 60fps. An LG 4K OLED would be better as most run at 120hz. (If you don’t mind the reflective screen)

The rabbit hole gets deeper. A simple answer to your question would be yes 4K is definitely better than 2K as it’s sharper. But you need to be asking yourself all the other questions to truly decide. I’ve been through so many monitors to test on flight sim and finally settled on a 34” Ultrawide which seems to be a very nice sweet spot.

Very good point. Luckily, my sim is in my basement where I control my lighting. But in a bright room, it can definitely be an issue. I have a lamp behind me as I sit at my cockpit. If it’s on, I see a big, giant glare from it in my TV.

I have two screens:

Dell 4K screen (3840x2160)
LG Ultrafine 5K (5120x2880)

The 4K is the best option for MSFS provided you have the computer power to run it.

I don’t use the 5K - my Mac isn’t powerful enough to give higher frame rates at 5K, even with a W6800X MPX module GPU.

4k 40" HDR TV here for monitor.
Looks astoundingly better than my other PC monitors, i deliberately got one with extremely low input lag.
Have a 32" 2k one sitting around, looks rubbish compared to it but it’s also matte screen, i much prefer the semi gloss however the pixels are still much more noticeable.

Don’t get caught with lies in TV marketing, when they say 200hz or 600hz it’s made up frames, it’s pure rubbish and not native, introduces input lag and looks terrible.

Do not bother with a 27" 4k, i even have windows scaled on a 40 inch to 125%.

Happy shopping.

I’m playing on 55 inches 4k and thinking about 8k, 65 inches but I’m waiting for some videos ( different tests, benchmarks
) with the RTX 4090
If I’d get 25 fps, I’ll go for it

The other thing I love about a 4K 55" TV (and I’ve never once noticed the reflective screen, maybe mine’s not so reflective??) is that I can open a million windows and just arrange them on the screen in their own place. Great for development and painting. I used to love painting planes until they took the ability to refresh the paint away  I’d have MSFS over here, GIMP over there, paint.net over there for conversion…

Well, maybe not a million, but, close to it…

Sweet!. Maybe for Christmas I’ll upgrade my 32inch 1440 to a 4K. A 48 inch may be too big for my office with the two 27 inch monitors, but I think I can easily get a 38 inch in there.

I have a 3080Ti which I think will handle it fine.

I have a wonderful 60hz 27inch 4k monitor. I run it in 1440p. The only time I notice a difference is when I’m looking at screenshots for my desktop wallpaper. I don’t see any improvement in the game with 4k, so the added performance cost is not worth it for me.

I think that’s because 27” is quite small for 4K. If it were 32” or larger you would probably see a difference. I used to have a 27” 4K monitor and did notice a difference in clarity even though the screen was small. But the real benefit with 4K is with a larger display.

I have both a UHD 4K monitor, and a 1440p monitor, both 27inch.

There is no really noticable difference at that screen size when playing a game. Of course there is some benefit if you are editing a photo or doing design, but for gaming its not really noticable in the movement.

Things may be more noticable at much higher screen sizes, though I suspect you would need to go to at least 32inch for 4K gameing to be noticable over 1440p, and even that would be a stretch, 40Inch or higher would probably be the sweet spot for gaming, (such as using a TV).

Note, as mentioned in another post, 2K actually means 1080p.. say 4k vs 1440p instead

Same. I have a 27" 4K and a 34" 1440p UW, Both are the same screen height. There’s no discernable difference between them with panels that size.

I have noticed that 60fps is the sweet spot, so I set my quality settings accordingly.

Ditch the monitors and go for a 4K 55+ flat screen TV.
Yes the pixels aren’t as dense but you don’t really notice. It’s still ridiculously beautiful and very immersive.

Bonus: if you work at home it’s a joy to connect your laptop with all that screen space available.

I am going to piggyback on this topic to ask about Hz.

The only sim/game I play is MSFS (otherwise as a programmer, I simply edit text files).

I usually get 30-40 fps consistently. What is the point of getting a 144Hz monitor over a 75Hz monitor?

If you have a 4k TV, plug that in and see what it looks like.

I run mine at 4k on a big LG TV. It’s definitely good.

But consider if you have a big screen, then you almost need to run 4k, as 2k starts to look not as good. Once you have that crispness, it’s hard to go back if you need the better performance (or prefer the higher frame rates) of the lower res.
