Is 4K now worth it considering the performance boost?

So a few months ago I decided to give 4K a miss due to the massive load it puts on the system. I decided to make do with 2K and got average 20-30fps. Now we have a nice performance boost I’m getting average 50-60fps. Is it now worth having 4K instead?

On a 65” 4K OLED, he’ll yeah. But for a PC if it can handle it yes

I use 4K with my RTX3080 and 3900X and Samsung 28“ 4K Display.

In terms of performance, I use all ultra… FPS are fine between 40-60 mostly.

But graphics are currently horrible. AA doesn’t work, I need to zoom in to read the numbers/letters in the cockpit, moire effects, flickering airport surfaces here and there when far away

Absolutely. And try HDR if you can too. Those colours :eyes:

Hmm, what CPU and GPU do you have?
If SU5 gave you a big boost you were probably CPU limited previously, in which case going to 4K would probably give about the same performance now as it would previously.

If you want to check what performance you’ll get you can simply set render scaling to 150 and see. If you run at 1440p (which I assume you mean by 2K) with scaling 150 you’re rendering at 4K.

Or, if you already have a 4K monitor, you can of course simply set the resolution to 4K and set render scaling to 100.

I use a 32" 4K monitor with a Ryzen 7 3700X CPU, RTX2060 GPU. So a good system but by no means cutting edge. I run essentially High end settings except for Terrain and Object LOD set to 200. In other words a smidgen better than pure High end. I also use Bijan’s seasons mod. I typically get GPU limited 25 - 30 FPS with CPU loafing along at just over 10% when flying low & slow GA aircraft (normally Beech G36 and C172 type aircraft.

I had some CTD’s for the first time after SU5 and decided to do a clean re-install as I had not done it before since getting the sim at release last year: this cured the CTD’s for me.

Of course this is a personal, subjective judgement and others could quite possibly disagree but I find the visuals to be fantastic. Some screenshots as examples for you to consider and draw your own conclusions:

Good luck with your choice!

Good to know that is.
I’ve got a 1440 monitor and an Rtx 3090 and i9 10900 kf.
I’m running the sim at 1440.
If I turn the render scaling up to 150 (like you suggested)!
It actually runs smoother than 100 .
This would probably indicate that it would run better on a 4k monitor?

Hm, that’s not really to be expected.
Perhaps it’s smoother as you’re not CPU limited and you get more stable frametimes → less stutter?

But yes, if it runs well at 1440p + 150 scaling it should run well on a 4K monitor. Indeed it should run practically exactly the same, performance wise.

What I don’t understand:
My LG LU28R55 monitor says it’s HDR10.

I can enable HDR in windows, and since I use the display port, it’s looks usable.

But when I start the sim, everything is oversaturated. Can’t use HDR in the sim…

Why

Yeaaa damnnn…

4k ia very nice. I have a 55 inch sony that has excellent features. I have everything set on ultra

You have a 4K monitor but set the resolution to 2K? Why not use 4K and change the rendering scale to your liking?

Same here. Never worked correctly for me

There is a lot of good information about configuring HDR in Windows and MSFS in the “Poor HDR Quality” topic. Maybe these instructions will help you.

I am using 4k and it runs great, averaging 30-60 fps depending on the area, so yeah, go for it!
RTX3070, Ryzen 5 3600, 16Gb RAM

I too had some CTDs, could not fly more than 1 hour. Sometimes shortly after take off.

I submitted a bug and support responded with a few things to try.

  1. Reset Graphics:
    1a. Options > General Options > Graphics >
1b. Change your Global Rendering settings to Low
    1c. Click Apply & Save.
1d. Change graphics back to High or Ultra
    1e. Click Apply & Save.

This appeared to work for me. I tuned a few things down to get better performance and even added some of my preferred Community mods (Working Title and some different Liveries), with no problems. I few for several hours on Friday.

However, today, Saturday, I got two CTDs without changing anything. First was after preparing flight and I started to taxi. The second was mid-flight.

Don’t know ■■■ to do now except mope.

I’ve got a 4k 70 inch TV. It looks decent but there’s no atmosphere staring at a monitor imo. Only VR for me.

4K has always been worth it. One of the first things I did after I bought the game was purchase an LG 55UN7300 for $379 at Costco and I’ve been loving it ever since. Plopped it on my desk right in front of me, and the cockpit is pretty much life size. Love it.
