Is anyone using Lossless Scaling on MSFS?

I want to use the Lossless Scaling application on Steam in msfs, but due to previous Nvidia frame generation and DLSS experiences, I am not sure if the texts in the cockpit, PFD, ND, ECAM etc. will become blurry and impossible to see. Does anyone use Lossless Scaling and recommend it?

I have it.

I have not used any other ā€˜hacksā€™ to improve FPS.

I have not had a problem reading / viewing instruments but I only get a modest increase in FPS.

I do notice minor visual artefacts in scenery, i.e. buildings, etc.

However, I will continue to use it as I think it will continue to improve and it works with any sim / game.

I have it and canā€™t fly without it. I get around 45 FPS, with lossless scaling takes me to 100-120fps range.

To get there, Iā€™m making compromises on the settings in Lossless Scaling program, like using 3x and performance mode. So, I do get some artifacts sometimes and maybe once a flight a hard stutter, but itā€™s worth it to me.

I can hit 80fps consistently if I use low settings on MSFS, but it just looks so nasty that way. I prefer to use around medium-high settings and take the hit in fps, then use Lossless Scaling to bump the fps back up.

Itā€™s worth it to me as I think the benefits of higher graphics setting mode like contrast and terrain LOD make a bigger impact on the overall graphic quality impression then the downside of artifacts and occasional weirdness that lossless scaling can introduce when ran full-bore like I do.

Kind of a trade off, up to you which is worse lower graphics setting or better graphics but some graphical glitchyness sometimes. I donā€™t have any issue reading gauges, I think thatā€™s more up to the anti aliasing setting you use. There are different modes of frame gen to choose from some prioritize sharpness like that so I think youā€™d be ok there.

Yes. In my case I reduce the fps to 1/3 of monitor refresh rate the x3 with losless. Minor issues outweigh the benefits. One such benefit is a lower GPU temperature - from 85c down to around 65-68c consistently.

I am using it and only really see problems when the original framerate drops below about 20fps. For me it does not increase or decrease the sharpness of text, but my monitors are 1080P. There is no magic settings combination, but some general pointers are to turn V-Sync off in the sim and use your GPU control panel to limit the sim to 1/2 of your monitorā€™s refresh rate, then use Lossless Scaling in 2X mode. So for me, thatā€™s capping at 60fps because my monitor runs at 120Hz. There are a couple solid YouTube videos on best practices. Your mileage may vary of course.

I use it on both of my PCs with a 180Hz and 170Hz 1440p monitor. Itā€™s a massive game changer. FPS is nailed at 180 and 170 on my end playing maxed out. Looking around the cockpit with TrackIR is incredibly smooth. There is artifacting when I view the aircraft from the outside (which I really donā€™t do much) and pan the camera but from the cockpit I donā€™t notice this.

Thanks to everyone who responded, I tried it and it works great. I recommend it to everyone.

This is blowing me away on ye olde GTX 1080.

I am getting 2x in regular mode and 3x in performance mode.

Allows for a ridiculous amount of fidelity on an 8 year old machine.

It never worked for me. Best used with low end systems.

It doesnā€™t work for VR. That is a real bummer.

Iā€™m using it on and off when I need it. Sometimes 30FPS (real) can feel smoother to the eye than 90FPS (with lossless scaling) so I use it only when I need to. Which is when things are maxing out so think Iniā€™s EGLL with FSLTL AI traffic in the Fenix and yes lossless scaling to the rescue. 18FPS turns into a much more usable 54FPS. It works for me best when using airliners and alt views via keyboard (which I use a lot).

It does have artifacts - clouds can show visual anomalies as they pass, panning views around too fast can appear a bit ā€œsteppedā€ (so perhaps no use for head trackers) but at my 4K screen res Iā€™m finding all the cockpit displays in airliners are pin sharp. (unlike when I use DLSS).

I use it on ā€˜defaultā€™ and LSFG 2.3 setting. x2 mode and performance off (I have a 3090).

Itā€™s a useful tool to have though - being external to sim I can toggle it on/off to try it out without having to reboot the sim, itā€™s cheap, easy to use (apart from the hassle of having to install & register with steam and have steam running in system tray while using it), and as it sits outside of the sim & does itā€™s thing, it doesnā€™t care what game you are using or what in game settings you have like DX11, DX12 etc. All in all worth a try and very valuable in certain circumstances (I was able to increase AI traffic density a bit at EGLL too for example).

I do wonder why a tool like this canā€™t be available from MS though.

I have two very high-end PCs and itā€™s a game changer for me. Best $7 Iā€™ve spent in a long time.

I donā€™t really notice this (or at all) with TrackIR no matter how fast I move my head around in the cockpit. Looking around in the external view is another story. There is a bunch of weird stuff going on. No idea why this only happens in the external view.

Fair enough I canā€™t comment on TrackIR as I donā€™t have it. I just find that panning cockpit views with the freeloock mouse can be not be totally smooth looking. Results will likely vary depending on yur system and refresh rates etc.

I find I have to have well optiised settings in my graphics settings too so I lock at 40FPS (1/3 RR 120Hz) with VSYNC for smoothness then use Lossless scaling and that is a lot smoother for me than say not using VSYNC and just letting the FPS sit wherever and adding in lossless scaling.

I shook my mouse around fast and itā€™s fine also.

Seems plausible.

I use it when I need to.

The artifacts seem noticeably worse than before the last update, despite my not changing any settings. Did anyone else notice this? Or just me?

I find it is a dream for IFR, GA or commercial. When you fly a plane predictably, the Lossless Scaling predicts frames very accurately. I can bump things up beyond reason with excellent results. Minor artifacts if I move a camera fast, but well worth it for the sublime fidelity the rest of the time. Again, 8 year old 4 core i7, with a GTX 1080. Fast for its time. But so was the PlayStation Pro.

It gets messier when hand flying. So barnstorming, GTA style fun, helicoptersā€¦ but I imagine your system and card play a large role in all this too. My slow system just struggles in general anyway.

Iā€™ve had a few windows issues with it and the mouse. I flip quite often back to desktop/browser while simming and the mouse can start to shrink/disappear/lag even though itā€™s the sim window being scaled. Usually a quick ā€˜unscaleā€™ and ā€˜scaleā€™ again sorts it out. Thatā€™s the beauty of it being external app though. It should work with FS2024 too (if we need it).

It also seems to work without using many CPU resources (or weā€™d notice it).
One area I notice it working well is the during the flight intro ā€˜movieā€™ part just ahead of starting your flight. That can be a 18FPS mess at busy airports but looks like a smooth movie with lossless scaling enabled.

I donā€™t like using it with helis or military jets at speed (too many artifacts), and havenā€™t tried with GA as I donā€™t really need it for GA. But for airliners at busy/dense airports itā€™s a must for me now.
