Hi,
I’m wondering if the FS2024 is better parallelized (mutli core and/or muti-threaded) than the fs2020.
I am cpu-limited in FS2020, and, as heard, the fs2024 “should” be better on this side.
Do you see a clear difference? Is it better and smoother? what about stutters ?
I have only fs2020 for now, and I have some stutters or freezes when I fly over cities, even when I reduce (a lot) the object-details, ground-traffic, etc…
btw, the fs2020 was not so bad as actually, I think all the successive updates made it worse and worse over the time (on this topic at least).
I am normally around 50-75 fps… but some lags and stutters make it falling at 10-16 fps
So, I’m am wondering if I should “jump” on the fs2024 and may see a good improvement… or If I need to thing about upgrading my cpu/ plateform, because fs2024 is the same or maybe even more demanding.
What is your experience? Was someone cpu-limited on FS2020, and is on FS2024 yet ?
thank you for sharing your experience.
My platform:
- core i7 8700k ( 6 cores 3.7 ghz / boost at 4.7 ghz)
- 32 gb ram
- ssd 4 tb nvme firecuda
- rtx 4070 ti oc 12 gb
- playing on Asus rog 49’ oled at 5120x1440 px, at 75 fps
- internet 400 mb
Ryzen 7950X3D, RTX 3090 Ti 24GB, 64GB (2x32) DDR5-6400/CL32
FS24 uses all the CPU cores I assign it to in Process Lasso. My FPS doesn’t change significantly whether I assign it to the eight Vcache cores, the eight non-Vcache cores, or even all 16 cores.
Does that mean it’s got better multi-threading? No it does not. But it also doesn’t mean it’s worse, or even the same. Multi-core usage is not the same as multi-threading.
My overall CPU performance is about the same as I had in FS20, but I think that’s due to other factors.
Load is somewhat better spread over multiple CPUs in 2024, and there are significant improvements to smoothness of scenery loading etc which reduce stuttering in heavy scenery areas.
But various differences (and bugs) may cause raw fps to be lower (sometimes much lower).
In general, assume that MSFS2024 is extremely buggy and any time you spend in it in the next couple months is likely to involve tweaking, testing, and debugging. If that sounds fine to you, then pick up MSFS 2024 and start playing with it now! You might enjoy it.
If that doesn’t sound good to you, then wait a few more months and ask folks about your hardware profile.

In a nutshell, for most people it seems to run smoother (fewer stutters) but with far fewer fps, Tom’s Hardware did extensive testing and found 30-40% lower performance on average. But this seems to be mainly due to increased GPU load.
But yes, CPU core/thread load seems to be far more evenly distributed.

I’ve justdone a comparison of the cores used in FS2024 against FS2020, and I was quite surprised:
[NB Taken at the same airport in the same plane etc]
FS2024
FS2020
So I can’t really see much difference between core usage between the two.
Despite having an old GTX1080Ti, I was Main Thread Limited, and I was hoping the multi-threading would improve things. As it is, I’m still Main Thread Limited, and my fps has dropped as I now am forced to use DX12 rather than DX11 - in VR I was in the 30’s before, but now in the 20’s.
A bit of a disappointment.
