Is MSFS single core?

Hello is MSFS a single core program and if so whats the big delay with bringing it up to modern day multi core processors

Nope;

It is not single core per say, but it is not multicore optimized.

The two are very different.

The sim is extremely single core dependent currently, but there have been updates to push it farther to spread the load to other cores. As dx12 matures in game this will expand.

But it IS multicore optimized. It’s just that the thread that keeps all the outsourced workloads synced up (the main thread) can only run on a single thread, and thus is the bottleneck often.

Some more improvements might come, but don’t expect the sim to ever fully utilize a workstation type CPU. 6C/12T is around the sweet spot, and 8C/16T is already a bit overkill.
Any more cores/threads above that are wasted on any gaming/simming workload, and are more suited for productivity workloads that lend themselves well to asymmetric multithreading (like rendering, video editing etc.)

That kinda shows yep lol. Core 1 is getting hammered.

But really that entire thing could be an ecg of a heart attack.

Try dev mode and use the tools there. Or afterburner and enable all core view. Its actually shocking where all that power is going.

not shocking at all, it’s logical. It’s a flight sim, many calculations need to be done before a frame can be sent off to the GPU. It’s just the nature of the sim.

I do get that, but there is no reason the game cannot hand off tasks efficiently.

Or the os maintain focus to prevent cpu hopping.

it’s already handing off tasks, and does it quite well. ‘CPU hopping’ is also not an issue with modern CPU’s. in the case of my 5800X, it’s working like intended. Moving the workload around to keep the cores cooler / keep the boost clock as high as possible.

Again, MSFS is not a workload suited for asynchronous multitreading.

Okayl how about the backgroud workloads. Surely the can be done by various cores?

What background workloads? What makes you think it’s not already doing that?

so if I want to upgrade my computer, and particularly with MSFS in mind - is there some CPU’s that are preferred? Without speculating too much in future optimizations.

Fewer cores preferred?

Oo-Wee!

Sorry, it was an interest conversation. That was all.

The current undisputed king of performance for MSFS is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, mostly because of the 97MB level 3 cache it has.

in general, 6 cores / 12 threads or 8 cores / 16 threads is optimal, anything above that is pointless.

Also depends on what kind of motherboard you currently have, and ram.

Or if you are just building a new kit

That reminder was not directed at you. The offending replies have been flagged and dispositioned. Thanks!

Needs to be all new anyways, cause Im still on the 1151socket.

Oh ok, thanks! Would have been my first ever mod telling off on a forum, i was rather upset lol

Prices are bananas right now. Everything seems to be dropping.

But the msfs anniversary edition is coming out in November and should provide some improvements. Might be a good benchmark for your current system.

Im not that familiar with amd systems, so talk to the other guy if you want to go that way.

If you are building a gaming machine for msfs

Tons of ram
Ddr5 if you can arrord the motherboard
32-64gb

Highest speed single core cpu you can get but find if its just gaming amd might be the sweet spot

Bit as he said tons of cores are not the answer, look at peak ghz

For me its the intel 17200k intel because i do photography and games so it was a good balance between speed and geeking.

A nvme is an absolute must for msfs!! Fast as you can afford 500gb min 1tb ideally because you will collect scenery

Gpu

Wait on this.

Nvidia has 4070‐4090s coming out and the performance is ‘who knows’ but they are loaded with ram. So thats good!

Oh and power supply

800w min
