After all the $ I have spent on MSFS2020 is 2024 at a point where further expenditure is warranted.
Do the BlackSquare mods etc work in 2024?
Which version is worth the $ spend, in the opinion of fellow simmers?
ATM keep playing MSFS2020
I enjoy it and it runs better than MSFS. I still have MSFS installed but don’t use it that much.
Free flight
High quality third-party addons
VATSIM / PilotEdge
Black Square addons work but aren’t 100% compatible.
Excited for the new Caravan…
Personally I just went with the Standard Edition as I buy exactly what I want. Nothing in the other editions interests me nor are they up to the fidelity I desire.
Thankyou for your reply, much appreciated.
The new Caravan look great.
Read this forum before deciding if it’s worth it to you
Never had FS2020. I come from DCS. Is FS2024 worth it? Having flown a couple of default MSFS planes in real life, I can say no. They just do not fly like the real thing. They are far too forgiving.
The real deal are far more sensitive.
I fly the A2A Comanche. I never intended to use the default aircraft. The comanche feels pretty real, although not as sensitive either as it should at 160mph.
However, since 24 dropped, I have not visited DCS once. The real world scenery is far more alluring than the admittedly far crisper, but less accurate scenery that dcs offers either.
Have to say, if you treat MSFS as a scenery pack, while using third party aircraft, yes it works. As a whole deal, sadly no.
When DCS finally completes the full world experience, as 2024 does now, sorry but 2024 is dead.
However, I do not hold my breath, I do not believe DCS has the financial resources to complete the full world dream.
At this point no. I am a real pilot, (single engine land day/night/vfr) since 1991. I use Xplane because it is far closer to the real thing and it helps me keep up with the needed procedures for real flying. If you just want to play a game, then msfs 2024 is what you want. I only came to msfs 2024 because I thought the career mode would be fun. But its broken beyond belief. I cant help but wonder if Elon Musk is involved somewhere.
When MSFS2024 is stable and feature complete, then you can compare MSFS2020 to MSFS2024 to see if it is worth it. At present, MSFS2024 is not complete, is unstable and lacks a market place. It feels like an early access game,
No, it’s in a terrible state, and tanks even the most powerful pc performance
Worth what I paid for it? Unfortunately not yet in its current state, especially for VR which is very average compared to MSFS 2020. Maybe in 6 months time.
Is it worth the price of a meal out? 100% YES!!
I waited a week for some of the main issues to die down and although it is obviously far from perfect I got my moneys worth within the first few hours.
I intend to be on this for at least the next 4 years, my total cost per hour will end up coming to pennies.
A lot depends on how you use FS24
I’ve lost count of screen shots that show the gpu VRAM overloaded in the fps display.
There is a quirk that cranking up to Ultra graphics was ok in 2020, but in 2024 that can overload the VRAM and the gpu stalls, dropping below 10fps.
The solution (that I find myself repeating a lot) is to reduce graphics LOD slightly and compare.
It seems the higher quality scenery in 2024 causes the VRAM overload. For example the ground is modelled far more accurately than FS20 including small rocks and cracks. So when landing the higher quality (larger) meshes are loaded in and overload the VRAM, which and can cause stutters and even stall the gpu.
A lot of users report landing stutters.
Also more detailed airports put extra load on the gpu.
Users who actively manage LOD seem to be the happiest. Eventually Asobo will fix the VRAM automatically - I ignore speculation about when and focus on what I can control today.
“Is FS24 worth it?” is really only a question YOU can answer rather than allowing others to make a decision for you. There are plenty of posts on this forum and info on YouTube that really negates new threads like this.
For those playing on career mode they are having a lot of issues, some genuine, some highly exaggerated.
People playing Free Flight tend to have far less problems. I have flown in excess of 60 flights in Free Flight now and I have only had one CTD, possibly two (I think the second was due to an external factor). Admittedly I do have a juicy PC (i9-12900KS, RTX 4090 and 64Gb RAM - though I have only recently installed the extra 32Gb, before that I had always been playing on 32Gb).
I do use a lot of third-party dlc airports (streamed) and BeyondATC with FSLTL models.
PS: Today I am about to make my first flight on VATSIM (GULP!).
Two months in and still unable to complete a single flight due to CTD at various times in flights. In my humble opinion save your money untill a later date.
Msfs 2024 should never have been released in its present state.
You’re certainly more optimistic than I am.
FS2024 uses DX12. Ever since DX12 was introduced into FS2020, it has caused problems with VRAM especailly on those gpu cards with less than say 16GB. It was introduced as a beta version, and never came out of beta before the launch of FS2024. So they have literally had years to fix it, and have failed.
On FS2020, for me (and I believe many people) there is a significant drop in fps between DX11 and DX12. There is now a similar drop between FS2020/DX11 and FS2024/DX12, suggesting to me that both versions use the same code. If they had ideas about how to solve the problem, they would have included it in the launch of FS2024, but obviously not.
They might change something and claim it will help, but we’ve had that before with other bugs so now I will only believe it when I see it.
I’ve been flying it since it was released, CTDs are as rare as in 2020 but wait times are way shorter to get in and get out of the sim and betweeen aircraft changes.
The default aircraft are a mix of great to broken, but mostly work. I have the majority of 2020 models working very well, indeed the feeling of flight is way better than 2020 and the scenery is unmatched anywhere if you like world exploration. Of course some areas are better tha others, all comes down to real world data availability. The sim itself can produce some majestic locations where it’s well detailed. There are many aircraft that fly as convincingly as any other sim, their onboard systems again working fully to broken across the range, if you can’t live with these issues then wait, if you can see past them, no need to wait, it’s up to you, I’m certainly having a blast with it.
I would have thought given the direction of the sim to download only what a player needs as they go, Asobo would also take that to heart and update individual models/aspects as they address them rather than keep that tradional model of major patches but here we are still waiting for basic fixes that would greatly improve user response to the sim.
at the moment , no way
So many things not working…
Non compatibility with certain payware airports
Cartoonish looking airports , lack of crispness in airport assets , etc
Stick to 2020 , more enjoyable and everything works , plus PMDG aircraft..
Funny thing is on you tube although there are plenty of little video’s on MSFS 2024 going back a month but the only one 's posting actual streams in 2024 are just a couple of die hard streamers
Only one really good video of the PMDG B738CF in 2020 .. basically because he cannot fly it in 2024
Actually there is another video comparison of 2020 and 2024 and the person who does it only tells you at the end which is which , most viewers get it wrong , can’t find the link at the moment unfortunately otherwise I would have added it.
I consider FS2024 to be an Alpha pre-release.
In Free Flight, when everything works, it is good.
But overall, there are thousands of bugs and it will take 1-2 years to fix it.
For me, the main issues are:
a. Server speed and bandwidth
b. Random issues like losing all of my bindings when I flew an Asobo aircraft for the first time
c. The horrendously complex control setup and the problems of saving bindings.
d. High memory usage - if you don’t refresh RAM then you may get a CTD
e. Stuttering at airports as the sim loads static scenery
f. The promise of FS2020 aircraft being compatible is wrong - I bought aircraft on this basis and they do not work correctly
g. Disabled 3rd party scenery whilst other scenery is active - no logic to this.
If I knew what I know now now, I would not have bought FS2024 until the community consensus was positive.
I continue to fly FS2020 with great FPS and I accept the regular disconnect indications and stutters.
Graphic Options to solve GPU overload have been available since the sim was released in 2020.
I agree FS24 is more vulnerable to LOD (Level Of Detail). I have tuned my settings to keep VRAM under 10GB on my gtx1080TI with 11GB.
It’s unfortunate there are much faster GPUs compared to the 1080, but with only 8GB and those systems struggle.
We know that Asobo can track VRAM usage and we know that reducing LOD and other parameters reduce VRAM, but it is an open loop system.
So Asobo have to close the loop and feedback VRAM usage into the LOD settings, recalculating LOD every few seconds for example.
The best example of a closed loop is your foot on the gas pedal/accelerator and your eyes on the road. When going too fast we ease off the pedal naturally, or if too slow more foot pressure.
Closed loop systems are fascinating, that’s how SpaceX rockets land automatically. It will take time for Asobo to find good default settings - typical controls are gain (sensitivity) and some kind of averaging (integration). The goal will be to maintain a max/min range of VRAM.
There are other approaches, but what I described is classic control system theory. Software can make smart decisions for aggressive changes, although we probably want smooth changes.
That is such a fantastic take! Perspective is so rare on tthis forum
