So, that’s the question for anyone who knows the answer. When flying solo, I can contact the airport tower and request a full stop for example. Now, if I get granted the landing permission, how do this affect other players in the area? Is the radio comm multiplayer?
Nope - if you are on Multiplayer you receive your own ATC. Other pilots aren’t included in the in-sim ATC.
For example, if you were cleared to land via the in-sim ATC, no one else would know you received your clearance.
I won’t swear to it but I think ATC is all generated locally on your system.
And it pains me to say this but it might be an area where AI could play a role. Microsoft could host AI ATC and it could route and vector all aircraft under ATC control while simulating tower comms to all pilots. Subject to bandwidth and any other limitations…
We could then maybe watch as AI ATC taxis liners across active runways while giving other planes clearances on that runway, etc.
Literally the simplest way to explain what’s going on right here. Game reads x, y, z bits of information about your plane and determines the best ATC call-out based on that information. This is where Azure and TTS technology comes into play in order to dynamically insert relevant information related to altitude, location etc (for climb/descent or taxi via) into the call-out. As we’ve seen in the last 4 years, it leaves much to be desired…
There’s probably a lot more going on than I’ve described here where variables it tries to adhere to realistic procedures at any giving flight phase that complicates the whole system. That is: how or why does the system know when to transfer you from a ramp controller to a ground controller at any given airport for example. This aspect certainly can’t be locally generated…thing.
If you want this and on PC I suggest using VATSIM and / or PilotEdge. I use both myself and I feel it really, really enhances the experience. VATSIM is free while PilotEdge isn’t (however very much worth the cost). My current subscription is for a year and I get all of what they offer. Very professional service on PilotEdge. VATSIM can be spotty. IVAO is another option out there but I have never used it.
It would be cool if there was an option to have Voice over IP built into flight sim, Like FSX had for Multiplayer, tune in a Frequency then could talk on there with a Push to Talk Button set up.
With Vatsim, are you able to fly with just listening in but not actually participate in the ATC or does that result in you being detected as some sort of rogue plane that’s getting in the way?
Yes. You may join as an observer where you won’t be seen by other players or ATC on the network.
Keep in mind, you can still be heard. So long as you don’t bind a Push to talk button you’ll be golden
